Tom Snyder, host of some of the best TV of the late 70's, early 80's (and even into the 90's with the Late Late Show) has passed away. At the time (before MTV launched in 1981), his show was the only place on American TV where you could see the likes of the Sex Pistols, the Clash or Elvis Costello. He had the last John Lennon interview and the first US appearance for U2. I remember how pissed I was when his show was replaced by some unknown named Letterman.
Tom was intense, smart and took no prisoners. He'll be missed. Here are some classic clips to remember him by...
A assortment of clips featuring Lennon, Elton John, Spielberg, U2, Hitchcock, Charles Manson, Ali...
U2's American TV debut... "we will be hearing a great deal of the U2 in this country in the months and years to come..."
The Clash in 1981...
A beat-up Iggy Pop...
The classic second half of his P.I.L. interview with John Lydon...
With the members of Kiss... this interview was rumored to have been the catalyst behind their break-up back then.
Arguing with Howard Stern...
