The Money Shot: Why Rock Radio Sucks, Winehouse Has Months to Live and The Best Ass In The History of Rock?

The latest headlines...

The Strokes' 'Is This It' cover model revealed (NME)
MS: “I walked out of the shower and I was completely naked,” she recalls. “I was walking around the house – he was like, put this glove on. I walked over, boom, that was the shot.”

Is Rock Radio Slowly Going Post-Modern? (Idolator)
MS: Now, all that remains is pretty much straightforward guitar rock. Jack Johnson or Eddie Vedder might sneak an acoustic guitar in there now and then, and Linkin Park still throw drum machines and rapping into their tunes, but big, compressed power chords rule Alternative and Active stations alike. And if Billboard's Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock singles charts feature half of the same songs, as they frequently do these days, how long will it be until Billboard realizes they only need one chart, or radio brass realize they only need one kind of rock station.

Amy Winehouse 'has months to live' says husband (NME)
MS: “Every day I fear the prison chaplain is going to walk into my cell and break the news that Amy is dead.”

The Money Shot: Man Sets Fire To Radio Career, Monkeys Lead NME Pack, & Fighting With Johnny Rotten...

The latest news...

Man Upset About Music Sets Fire To Radio Station (NBC 5)
MS: Feinstein told investigators that he was "very unhappy" about the changes to his playlist, said Austin Fire Department Battalion Chief Greg Nye. The songs were intended for an Internet broadcast that occurs when the station is off the air.

"He had a dream of a career in radio and was very disappointed about where it had led him," Nye said.

John Lydon in family feud (Music News)
MS: "Doctors later told us he has a bad heart. He had been on blood pressure tablets for 25 years and had high cholesterol. "John said to me, 'How can a fit man die of a heart attack?' He was really aggressive and implied it was my fault. I ended up putting the phone down on him. My John was not a fit man, he was ill. His mind was going too. I think John is trying to cut me out now. It's just too awful for words."

Arctic Monkeys get record seven NME nominations (Reuters)
MS: The Arctic Monkeys are contesting the best British band, best live band, best album, best track, best video and best video album artwork categories, while lead singer Alex Turner is nominated for the "best dressed" award.

The Money Shot: DBT Almost Broke Up, Blur on Coke & Chris Walla Learns Difference Between 'Detained' and 'Confiscated'

More news...

Drive-By Truckers: The Burrs in Rock 'n' Roll’s Saddle (Popmatters)
MS: We got off the road long enough this past year to actually miss it again. We’d really run ourselves into a wall, playing non-stop for so long. How many of your favorite bands break up and then a few years later realize that if they’d have taken a few months off to step back and realize the big picture, they’d have stayed together? We went through that. Fortunately, we did the right thing ‘cause we were at that point where you’re just so frustrated that you can’t see the forest through the trees. I think taking a break and kinda pulling back some really helped. I also think working on the Bettye LaVette record was a chance for us to work together but it wasn’t a Drive-By Truckers project.

Catching Up With... Chris Walla (Paste)
MS: I learned technically [that it wasn't] “confiscated.” My hard drive was “detained.” Having something “confiscated” is a more serious thing, and having something “seized” is even more serious. That had a measurable, significant effect on the way the record unfolded. In fact, one of the things that it did was that the record that [was sent out to press as an advance] is, in large part, mixes that didn’t make it to the record people will buy in the stores. When that whole thing happened and the drive got hung up, there was a really small window in which I was able to finish mixes. And that event sort of erased that window. That was kind of a big drag because the record, to me, in the form that [the press received], it feels like from about the fourth song to about the tenth song it’s got a really similar color. It doesn’t feel like it’s totally engaging through the whole length of the thing.

Blur's Alex James calls cocaine 'a trail of death' (NME)
MS: "My heart started beating faster when I was met at the airport by heavily armed security guards and escorted to a bomb-proof monster truck," he said, adding, "The cash generated by coke basically has been funding a civil war that's been raging for decades."

The Money Shot: Too Much To Listen To = Listening To Less?, Moz Is A Bitch To Work For, & Cat Power's Career Choices...

The latest news...

Cat Power's nine lives (Times Online)
MS: “I was under so many layers of self-hatred,” she recalls, “that I couldn’t open up. It never dawned on me that I was a singer until two years ago. I was on tour, I’m singing and I’m sober, and I’m like, ‘Holy shit, I’m singing, and this is easy and fun.’ Before, it was always so emotional, because it wasn’t where I’d pictured myself being. I pictured myself living in a cold coastal town, no tourists, an alone person. I never wanted to be a singer. I wanted to be a painter, or a dancer, or a baker, or a teacher – or president of the United States.”

22,000 Songs and Nothing to Listen To (Seattle Weekly)
MS: "Less album listening means that people aren't forced to listen to things that don't turn them on right away, and as a result, tastes change less." Yep: Having 6 million songs at hand means that tastes actually change less. It's a common predicament for anyone wanting to expand their tastes, knowing that there's no reason to listen to, say, the end of a song, much less an entire album you don't "get" right away. Even though it ultimately will expand my palette, do I really have the patience to get into heavy metal when I already know I love Spoon?

I was Morrissey's roadie (Times Online)
MS: “What was the first record you ever bought? Moz asks everyone that, I’m told. What would your answer be?”

Being involved in music I have often been asked this question and my policy recently has been honesty. It wasn’t the Velvet Underground, Sex Pistols or the Jesus and Mary Chain, it was Rocket Man, by Elton John. “F*** me, Andrew,” he says. “Don’t tell Moz that, you’ll be right out the door. T. Rex is always good.”

It’s not long before I make another apparent faux pas. We are listening to Indie 103, one of the best alternative rock radio shows in LA. I am asked if I have heard the station’s show by the Sex Pistol Steve Jones. I say I have but also like to listen to Henry Rollins, whose Harmony in my Head show is on the same station. This is met with a frown and then silence. I wonder if I have said something else wrong, then forget it.

The Money Shot: U2's Manager and Music Labels Decide Your ISP is The Problem While The WSJ Gets Clued In That Digital Is The Future of Music...

Headlines, headlines, headlines...

Music Firms Want EU to Cut Off Pirates (Business Week)
MS: "Up until now, ISPs have allowed copyright theft to run rampant on their networks, causing a massive devaluation of copyrighted music," said John Kennedy, the CEO of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the record industry trade association. "The time for action is now -- from the EU and other governments."

Playing the blame game in the music biz (LA Times)
MS: In a keynote address to several hundred convention delegates, McGuinness, who has managed U2 since the band started, directly attacked the creators and operators of ISPs, saying, "I think the failure of ISPs to engage in the fight against piracy, to date, has been the single biggest failure in the digital music market.

"They are the gatekeepers with the technical means to make a far greater impact on mass copyright violation than the tens of thousands of lawsuits taken out against individual file sharers," he said. "To me, prosecuting the customer is counterintuitive, though I recognize that these prosecutions have an educational and propaganda effect, however small, in showing that stealing music is wrong."

Beyond the Album (Wall Street Journal)
MS: The music industry likes to say the CD can't compete with free, but that's missing the point. The real problem -- as those kids showed EMI so devastatingly -- is that the physical increasingly can't compete with the digital. (Or maybe they didn't care about Coldplay and Robbie Williams.) The music industry's experiments with various new CD formats -- the CD-View Plus, ringle, etc. -- are doomed because they still depend on a plastic disc fewer and fewer people want.

But if the CD is dying, will the album follow?

The Money Shot: The (Incredibly Detailed) Life & Times of Rivers Cuomo, Why Bloggers Suck, & Apple COULDN'T Be Overhyping iPhone Sales, Could They?

A bunch of new headlines...

Amateur Hour (Time Out Chicago)
MS: “[Bloggers] are pushing what they like, and I think they feel like they’re doing the band a favor,” he says. “I think a lot of clubs might have gotten hurt [by this]. More than once over the past year, there have been bands that have been riding ‘basement critic’ buzz that just didn’t translate into anything.”

iPhones piling up at AT&T stores (Crave @ CNET)
MS: "We believe the data points to a significant amount of iPhone channel inventory...This is negative in two ways: (1) it indicates end-user demand for iPhone is lower than many investors may think based on Apple's sales figure; and (2) it points to slower iPhone sales in the current quarter, since much of this inventory is likely to be drawn down," Sacconaghi wrote in his report.

Let's walk through the theory. Apple said on Tuesday that it sold 3.7 million iPhones in 2007. But AT&T said Thursday that it ended 2007 with around 2 million iPhone customers.

Rivers Cuomo's Memoirs To Span Eight Volumes (Gigwise)

“Right now I have eight volumes sketched out.”

The Money Shot: Navarro Reconsiders Jane's Addiction, UK Digital Sales Slow and The World Is Shocked To Find Out That UB40 Was Still Together...

UB40 singer Campbell quits group (BBC News)
MS: "Ali Campbell has taken the decision to focus on his solo career and in doing so, could not give his full commitment to UB40. The other band members of UB40 are naturally disappointed and saddened after being together as a band unit and as good friends and a family unit for almost 30 years."

Dave Navarro's Spread Entertainment (6767.com)
MS: My love for the music out weighs any old baggage that might have been. As I have said in the past... If Van Halen and the Eagles can get over their issues, I don't see why we can't. I just think that if something like that ever happened, it should be shows only with no new label, management, photo shoots, press and all that crap that clouds the experience. Simply a month or two of theater tour dates to celebrate the music.

Digital music growth slows as pirates thrive (Times Online)
MS: Illegal music downloads outnumbered tracks sold by a factor of twenty to one last year, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). As the industry body announced that digital music sales rose by 40 per cent last year, it called on internet service providers to take action to counter illegal filesharing.

The Money Shot: Brits Tell Bruce To Keep It Down In There, The Police Are In It For The Art, and Hmmm...I Guess The Album IS Dead (and DVD Killed It)

The latest headlines...

Has digital killed the record store? (Springfield News-Sun)
MS: Competition from other sectors is a more likely explanation, according to Oberholzer-Gee and Strumpf's statistical analysis of file sharing activity in 2002.

"A shift in entertainment spending toward recorded movies alone can largely explain the reduction in sales," they wrote. "The sales of DVDs and VHS tapes increased by over $5 billion between 1999 and 2003. This figure more than offsets the $2.6 billion reduction in album sales since 1999."

In addition, computer game sales rose by 40 percent and mobile phone usage by teenagers tripled during that period.

Boss can make stadium rock (but not too much) (This Is London)
MS: The Rev Stephen Coles, vicar of St Thomas's Church in Finsbury Park, said: "It is very unfair on residents living around the stadium who will have to put up with the noise. I have no faith that a concert will be controlled to the level that it will only be audible within the stadium itself."

Labour councillor Theresa Debono said there were also concerns about increased anti-social behaviour. She said: "If you have thousands of people drinking and stumbling out of a concert it can only mean trouble. There is a feeling residents' views are not being taken into account."

Green councillor Katie Dawson said: "This is not Wembley, it is Islington. It is bonkers to put on concerts without first ensuring the noise will not disturb residents nearby."

Why would rock and roll legends decide to re-form? (Herald Sun)
MS: The Police reunion, a surprise to the band as much as the world who'd watched their acrimonious split, is generating them $160 million for about 114 shows. The tour has sold 1.5 million tickets worldwide. However, the three weren't exactly down to their last few dollars.

Ed Bicknell, one-time manager of Dire Straits and now head of the music division of the powerful William Morris Agency, believes the Police reunion was partly inspired by "getting back together with your mates, the camaraderie''. However, he mentioned a certain seven-figure lure.

"I doubt any of these acts would have got back together had there not been a significant financial pay-off. I can't imagine Sting and Stewart Copeland are doing it out of some kind of 'it's for the art, man' attitude.''

What is the Davos Question?

We're a little late to the party, but you can find out more here...

Every year, many of the world's top leaders attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss how to make the world a better place.

This year, you get to join them.

First, submit a video answering The Davos Question:

"What one thing do you think that countries, companies or individuals must do to make the world a better place in 2008?"

Then, starting January 1st, watch and rank others' ideas. The highest-rated videos will be screened in Davos (January 23-27), where world leaders will watch your videos and make responses of their own. Your idea could be the start of something big.

The Money Shot: Police Top Forbes' List, Heath Ledger = Nick Drake and This Just In... Radio Sucks (SHOCK!)

Today's headlines...

Why Things Suck: Radio (Wired)
MS: The biggest barriers to building a radio audience are the polarizing power of music and the plethora of choices on the dial. So, when corporations like Clear Channel started buying up stations in the late '90s, they set about building a lowest-common-denominator product that would be attractive to the most listeners. "There's this idea of the perfect playlist," Walker says. "Find it with research and attract the perfect audience." But it turns out that the most lucrative audience is really just "people who will not change the channel during the ads." The result: watered-down programming designed primarily not to offend.

The Heath Ledger/Nick Drake Connection (Pitchfork)
MS: Ledger created a black-and-white video clip that was shown at a pair of exhibits devoted to Drake last year, according to MTV.com and Billboard.com reports.

As the MTV.com report explains, "A representative for Drake's estate described the 'gorgeous' and 'extremely moving' clip as a stark black-and-white composition, consisting mainly of the director turning the camera on himself. In the end, Ledger is seen drowning himself in a bathtub."

The song playing during this is Drake's "Black Eyed Dog", purportedly the last song the English singer ever wrote and allegedly a reference to Winston Churchill's description of depression.

Music's Biggest Cash Kings (Forbes)
MS: Playing live was a big cash generator for all the artists on our list. By far the biggest tour of the year was the Police reunion, as Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland decided to bury the hatchet and hit the road for the first time since 1986. Financially, it was a no-brainer: The trio generated $133.2 million in concert receipts at an average ticket price of $112--and that's face value. In all, the band racked up an impressive $142.4 million in concert tickets and music sales.

The Money Shot: R.E.M.'s Sex Video?, Patterson Proud That DBT's "Demanding", and Apple Sez "iTunes Are To Razor Blades as Macs Are To Razors..or Not"

More headlines...

Apple's Strategy: Rent iTunes to Sell Macs, iPods (PC World)
MS: When asked by an analyst during the earnings conference call if the goals for iTunes rentals was profitability or incremental Apple TV sales, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer responded that the company hoped to run the iTunes Store a little above break even, but selling iPods and Macs was the main strategy.

R.E.M. Shoots Video At NYC Sex Shop, Restaurant (Billboard)
MS: The trio then moved next door to sex toy emporium Babeland around 8 p.m. A pair of cameras captured them playing near the window display at the front of the store to an audience of surprised employees. Babeland co-owner Claire Cavanah says a band representative had called just that afternoon proposing the store as a location for part of the video.

Patterson Hood On "Demanding" Records, And His Fave Classic Rock LPs (Stereogum)
MS: It's the true nature of what we do that the best Rock is sometimes the most challenging. My favorite artists and bands challenge my thinking, my preconceptions and sometimes my patience. If I didn't love contrary I wouldn't have spent nearly 23 years slugging it out with Cooley. I also wouldn't be a Neil Young, Todd Rundgren or Bob Dylan fan.

The Money Shot: Vedder Gets Screwed, Winehouse Gets A Lesson In Irony and No, Wait.. The Album IS Still Alive...

Latest news...

HMV on song amid music industry discord (The Guardian)
MS: "Our view is that when there is good material and good releases, the music industry will prosper. We felt there was a good line-up this Christmas, we think the line-up is actually going to get better," he said. "We are pretty confident."

As for the prospects for CD sales, which have been falling for years, Fox was equally upbeat.

"I think there is life in the CD yet; 138m were sold last year," he said.

Amy Winehouse Heads to Rehab After Allegedly Being Caught Smoking Crack (Fox News)
MS: Watching the video, it is not clear what Winehouse is smoking, but The Sun says she was "sucking in crack fumes from a glass pipe." The paper says the singer took "hit after hit of the drug after a 19-minute binge in which she snorted powdered ecstasy and cocaine."

'Enchanted' Dominates Oscar Song Category (Billboard)
MS: Songs from the film "Enchanted" dominated the best original song category nominees for the 2008 Academy Awards, which were announced this morning (Jan. 22). Three of the five nods, all with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, went to the film in the form of "Happy Working Song," "So Close" and "That's How You Know."

The other nominees are "Raise It Up" from "August Rush," the music and lyric credits for which are "to be determined," according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and "Falling Slowly" from "Once," with music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova.

R.I.P. Heath Ledger

Sad, shocking news from NYC today. Here's an interview from happier days when the talented actor was doing press for the Dylan bio pic I'm Not There...

"I'm lucky in a sense because I have a job where I get to scream and cry," he says. "I get to purge myself in ways that don't really affect me personally.

"When the director yells cut, I just walk out the door and I'm back into my regular life," he says.

Ledger was a music lover who started a record label with Ben Harper, also serving as director for Harper's "Morning Yearning" video. I suspect he'd find that clip a fitting tribute...

The Money Shot: Hating Wilco, Teddy Thompson Wants Your Attention & The Music Industry Wants To Raise Your Taxes...

More news here...

Rant: Wilco Is So Easy A Caveman Could Get It (Cinema Blend)
MS: I realized that it was Wilco’s lyrics that had sucked me in, not so long before. Not because I thought Jeff Tweedy’s lyrics were overly well written—in fact, they’re frequently a wad of drivel—but because they are filled with basic imagery that anyone could relate to. They suck you in with universal concepts like love and nostalgic reminders of past times. It is these lyrics (coupled with an inert anger that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot could make people feel special without being overly special), upon closer inspection, that became why I, not so subtly, but rather passionately, began to loathe Wilco.

Digital tax could save the music industry from itself (Chicago Tribune)
MS: The Songwriters Association of Canada is proposing a $5-a-month licensing fee on every wireless and Internet account in the country, in exchange for unlimited access to all recorded music.

The deal would put $1 billion annually in the pockets of artists, publishers and record labels, according to the songwriters group. The money would be distributed to artists based on how frequently their music is swapped on-line; the more downloads, the more money the people responsible for the music would accrue. Big Champagne, a Los Angeles-based Internet monitoring service, says it can track file-swapping accurately enough to ensure that artists big and small would be compensated.

Yet initial reaction to the proposal within the Canadian recording industry has not been overly supportive. Most see the proposal as such a radical transformation that it would jeopardize current businesses, including paid digital music services. The president of the Canadian Recording Industry Association, Graham Henderson, castigated the proposal as a “pipe dream” and a “quick fix,” according to Billboard.

Teddy Thompson: Folk prince is ready to inherit (Telegraph)
MS: "I still do lots of gigs where I'm the support act and people are chatting through my set, but I've got better at grabbing attention. I mean, my parents would play on bills with people like Judas Priest and get booed all the way through. But they stuck it out, got tough."

The Money Shot: Bono's Horrific Ass Takes on 'Cloverfield', A Drunk, Ancient Robert Plant Disses Radiohead, RHCP & Hillary's a Slacker?

Today's news...

Zep ace no fan of new music (The Sun)
MS: “He was drinking with a woman and didn’t like the choice of tunes playing. Radiohead was on and he started complaining. He said, ‘What’s this rhyming c**p?’ The staff were obviously keen to please him so they changed the music. They put on the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who they thought might be more up his street. But he didn’t like their stuff either and said it was like a ‘nursery rhyme.’"

Candidates' Tunes Hit A Few Sour Notes (Washington Post)
MS: Hillary Clinton, for example, whips up supporters at rallies with ear-blasting recordings of Tom Petty's "American Girl" and Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Takin' Care of Business," among others. The title of the first song suggests a kind of patriotic autobiography. The second is supposed to say something about Clinton's can-do style.

Except that "Takin' Care of Business" is actually about not taking care of business. The '70s-era rock number (which George W. Bush also used in a 2004 campaign video) is from the point of view of a slacker: "People see you having fun/Just a-lying in the sun/Tell them that you like it this way." The lyrics go on to add, "It's the work that we avoid/And we're all self-employed/We love to work at nothing all day."

U2's 3D Concert Film Debuts At Sundance (Billboard)
MS: "It's kind of horrific," to see himself on stage in 3-D, said Bono. "It's bad enough on a small screen. Now you get to see the lard arse 40-foot tall."

The Money Shot: The Next Radiohead is Rhett Miller?, Cuban Says "Album's Dead" (Duh!), Maximo Park's Not In It For The Money...

More headlines...

The Album Is Dead (Blog Maverick)
MS: Reading last week's Billboard, something interesting popped out at me. The song Low Rider by Flo Rida sold 467,000 units in a single week. There were 27 digital singles that sold more than 100k units in that week. The obvious trend continues that people are ready, willing and able to buy singles of songs they like.

So the question arises, why don't artists serialize the release of songs ? Why not create a "season" of release of songs, much like the fall TV season and promise fans that Flo Rida is going to release a new single every week or 2 weeks for the next 10 weeks ?

Sure, its not easy to come up with a great song every 2 weeks. But isnt that exactly the same problem you have with an album ? Maybe thats not the "creative process" for certain artists. That's a problem for them.

What we do know is that music fans will spend 99c and that its easier to ask them for 99c a week than it is to get 9.99 at one time from them for 10 songs.

Maximo Park: 'Rivals put money ahead of art' (NME)
MS: "There's too many people trying to be like something else to fit in and make money,” he told the Daily Record. “I was never in a band to make money, I was in it to do the best for myself and to play alongside other people who have the same ideas.”

Rhett Miller at the Black Cat Tonight (Georgetown Voice)
MS: I have not signed another record deal for my solo stuff, and my manager is talking to some major labels that are interested. I’m just not sure if I believe in it anymore. I just don’t really see why I couldn’t record an album myself and put it up on my website and then that’s it. You know you don’t get paid for this stuff, that’s not how musicians have gotten paid in years unless you’re a superstar. So why not? Why not just leave them out of the loop?

The Money Shot: "Rock Band" Is the New Ringtone, Moz's Misery & Billy Bragg's Hangin' With The Queen (WTF?)

The latest headlines...

A very royal connection (Sydney Morning Herald)
MS: "That was the Queen's reaction actually when she looked at me," Bragg says. " 'Bloody hell, what are you doing here?' I didn't realise I was going to shake her hand. I knew she was coming to the gig but, to be perfectly honest with you, it's funny enough writing new lyrics to Ode To Joy and 600 people singing them with an orchestra. That in itself is funny enough but when you're doing that and you can see down in the royal box the Queen following your words in her program, it's pretty wacky. Then they say, by the way, she got her private secretary to ring up [asking], 'Can you sign a copy of the score?' It's just mad. It's too funny. One of those 'how daft can it get?' moments."

Morrissey: Heaven knows why he's miserable (The Telegraph)
MS: "Oh, you silly old man. You silly old man in your misguided trousers. The song you just sang, it sounds exactly like the last one. I know that you say how age has no meaning, but here is your audience now and they're screaming: 'Get off the stage!'?"

MTV: 'Rock Band' sells 2.5 million songs (CNET)
MS: Players of the rock music simulator have downloaded more than 2.5 million songs at about $2 each in the eight weeks since the game went on sale, MTV said on Thursday.

The numbers were well ahead of MTV's own expectations and underscored the potential of video games as a new source of revenue for a music industry grappling with falling CD sales.
