The Money Shot: Craig Finn's Not 19, Harp Picks 50, & 18 F-You's

Modern Rock Goes Back to the Future (Crawdaddy)
MS: “When I write a song about someone who’s say, 19, everyone can relate to it because we’ve all been 19 once,” Finn says. “In other words, we’ve been able to capture a lot of older fans for a rock band because at age 36 you have a certain perspective about what was funny about being 19. And you can’t have that perspective when you are 19. The things that you’re really embarrassed or concerned about back then are kind of funny 20 years later, cause at the time you think you know everything... but you really don’t.”

Fuck this town: 18 kiss-off songs to cities (A.V. Club)
MS: 4. The Bottle Rockets, "Indianapolis"

A million songs have bemoaned the hard-knock life of a small-time touring musician, but The Bottle Rockets capture it on the most tedious level here: a van breakdown that strands them in Indianapolis. Ten days into a tour, the novelty has worn off, and frontman Brian Henneman openly fantasizes about ditching his bandmates for a ride home. The waiting, and Indiana's favorite son, may drive him over the edge: "Who knows what this repair will cost, scared to spend a dime / I'll puke if that jukebox plays John Cougar one more time."

Key line: "Is this hell or Indianapolis?"

The Money Shot: 10 Artists in Pain, 10 Bitter Chicks & 50 Great Records of the Millenium...

The latest headlines...

The 50 Greatest Albums Of The Millennium! (Gigwise)
MS: 3. Arcade Fire – ‘Funeral’ (2005) They may hail from the country that gave us Brian Adams and Celine Dion, but everything about Arcade Fire wreaks of beauty, grandiose brilliance and touching poignancy. Seemingly out of nowhere they delivered an album of startling brilliance, that tugged at the heartstrings of millions.

Revenge is a Bitch: The 10 Most Bitter Female Rock Songs (Cracked)
MS: #1."You Oughta Know" - Alanis Morissette
The list of urban legends on who Morissette is singing about is nearly as long as Carly Simon's. The most notable of those honorees are Bob Saget of Full House, Dave Coulier of Full House, hockey player Doug Gilmour, hockey player Mike Peluso, Matt LeBlanc of Friends and musician Leslie Howe. According to a news story it's commonly accepted that the song is, in fact, referring to Dave Coulier.

Devlin's 10 Things: An artist's pain can bring great music our way (Canada.com)
MS: 7. Elvis Perkins, (from 2007's Ash Wednesday). To some, Elvis Perkins is appealing simply because he's the son of famous people (Psycho actor Anthony Perkins and photographer Berry Berenson). But his effective debut proves there's much more to the puzzle. And how: his father died of AIDS and his mother was on a plane that hit a World Trade Center tower in 2001. When he sings, on the title track, "I've made a death suit for life/For my father's ill-widowed wife," the pain is deep.

The Money Shot: Guitar Hero Is Killing Rock Music, Kanye & Evel Settle, Universal CEO Morris = World's Biggest Tool?

Today's headlines...

Universal's CEO Once Called iPod Users Thieves. Now He's Giving Songs Away. (Wired)
MS: Morris insists there wasn't a thing he or anyone else could have done differently. "There's no one in the record company that's a technologist," Morris explains. "That's a misconception writers make all the time, that the record industry missed this. They didn't. They just didn't know what to do. It's like if you were suddenly asked to operate on your dog to remove his kidney. What would you do?"

Personally, I would hire a vet. But to Morris, even that wasn't an option. "We didn't know who to hire," he says, becoming more agitated. "I wouldn't be able to recognize a good technology person — anyone with a good bullshit story would have gotten past me." Morris' almost willful cluelessness is telling. "He wasn't prepared for a business that was going to be so totally disrupted by technology," says a longtime industry insider who has worked with Morris. "He just doesn't have that kind of mind."

Kanye West settles lawsuit with Evel Knievel (NME)
MS: "I thought he was a wonderful guy and quite a gentleman. We settled the lawsuit amicably. I was very satisfied and so was he."

Is tomorrow's Clapton playing 'Guitar Hero'? (CNET)
MS: "It's going to kill music," said San Diego bass instructor David Hilton. "It seems to me that as long as (Guitar Hero fans) can get really, really good playing this console, (and) it's not really easy to play (a real) instrument," that the guitar is dead.

The Money Shot: Winehouse Cancels (Again), The National Eats Paste & Delusions of a Home Rockstar...

More headlines...

Signs of Life 2007 : Best Music (Paste Magazine)
MS: 1. The National - Boxer
2. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
3. Bruce Springsteen - Magic
4. The White Stripes - Icky Thump
5. Feist - The Reminder

7. Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
8. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
9. Band of Horses - Cease to Begin
10. Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog

The Unscene (Popmatters)
MS: Hidden in plain sight, home recordists make a virtue of their inconspicuousness amid the prefabricated pop manufactured by the culture industry. However, their stories suggest that they are not immune to the lure of ambition or blind to the shining light of attention. When I ask Charlie if he ever thinks about performing his songs live, Charlie says without pause, “Oh, yeah. I’d like to play for people. I don’t want to play anywhere massive like the Pepsi Center, but, you know, I could really see playing somewhere like Red Rocks or the Fillmore.” The scope of his hopes stunned me—Red Rocks is a historic amphitheater that holds nearly 10,000 people, and the Fillmore auditorium in Denver holds 3,600.

Amy Winehouse Scraps All Tour Plans (NME)
MS: "I can't give it my all onstage without my Blake. I'm so sorry but I don't want to do the shows half-heartedly; I love singing. My husband is everything to me and without him it's just not the same."

The Money Shot: The RIAA's A Joke, Ivy League Pirates, & Better Than An iPod?

The headlines keep coming...

RIAA Piracy Fight Makes It To The Ivy League (Information Week)
MS: Lamy said that lawsuits are the RIAA's "last preference" but necessary "given the continuing prevalence of music theft on college campuses."

"This theft triggers a harmful domino effect throughout the music community -- thousands of regular, working class musicians and others out of work, record stores shuttered, new bands never signed," he said. "When faced with this reality, we have no choice but to hold those individuals responsible for ignoring the law and all the great new legal ways to get affordable, high-quality music."

Rivals to iPod are music to your ears (Chicago Tribune)
MS: There can be good reasons for not picking an iPod. One, other players often include an FM radio; iPods do not. Two, the following devices worked easily on Microsoft Windows, as does the iPod, and each found and organized the music files I have scattered about the Hewlett-Packard laptop I used for this review. Three, price considerations: Some offer exceptional value.

Who else is laughing at the music industry? (CNET)
MS: Simply put, all we want is to be trusted. Get rid of the DRM and for goodness sake, get rid of that disgusting Recording Industry Association of America, and start trusting that consumers are willing to do what's right if you don't force them into a corner and make them do what's wrong. Will there still be piracy? Sure. But believe it or not, a happy consumer won't mind paying $5 to $10 for an album if you let them.

The Money Shot: The Loudness Wars, Radio's Past = Internet's Future? and Amy Winehouse Is Running Out of Rope...

The latest headlines...

Amy Winehouse fans revolt after shambolic gig (NME)
MS: While performing 'Valerie' as part of the show's encore, Winehouse left the stage again, halfway through the song, this time for good, once more leaving a backing singer to fill in until the show ended.

Audio gain in volume signals loss for listeners (Baltimore Sun)
MS: Studio engineers are pushing the envelope on technology that makes recordings sound louder than ever before - ensnaring listeners in an audio arms race dubbed "The Loudness Wars."

"The level of compact discs went up about 20 decibels in 20 years," observed Bob Katz, chief mastering engineer of Digital Domain, a sound studio in Florida.

Internet is the new radio (London Free Press)
MS: "The music industry was very afraid of radio in the '20s," says Rob Bowman, Grammy-winning music historian and professor of ethnomusicology at Toronto's York University. "If you look at 78s from that period, they often have printed on the label, 'Not licensed for radio play.' Radio was an eminently superior medium, and the music industry thought radio was simply giving away their product -- 'Why would people ever buy 78s if they could hear them all day for free?' was the line of reasoning."

The Money Shot: Federici Leaves E Street For Now, Indie Rock Diversity & the RIAA Gets (More) Political...

More headlines...

Hail indie rock, in all its diversity (L.A. Times)
MS: Gogol Bordello. This New York-based band recasts the music of the Roma people within a kitchen-sink blend of rock, ska, reggae and more that they call "gypsy punk." With Israeli, Russian and Roma members, Gogol Bordello's music reflects the immigrant experience as it's unfolded from Ellis Island to the outer boroughs and suburbs of today's America.

Springsteen organ-player leaves band (NME)
MS: Organist Danny Federici played his last show for the time being in Boston with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. Springsteen's organist since the 1960s, Federici was diagnosed with the skin cancer melanoma, and left the group to undergo treatment for the condition.

RIAA, MPAA urge pro-copyright vows from presidential candidates (CNET)
MS: RIAA chief Mitch Bainwol put it this way: "When Americans vote, they are making decisions about the values important to them. And one of those values must be a commitment to creativity. For some, that commitment will be a function of the economic significance of intellectual property. For others, that commitment will be about the power of the ideas our content spreads throughout the world. But the commitment to intellectual property rights, whatever the motivation, is what we must look for."

The Money Shot: J&M Chain Saved By Brotherly Love, The Hypocrisy of Stolen Music & How to Share It Legally (Kinda)...

More headlines...

Excuses for stealing music as varied as the artists (London Free Press)
MS: "Come on, people, it's 99 cents! Plus, this generation has unprecedented access to money -- debit cards, credit cards, you name it, they've got it. And they sit there and say a buck is too much when they've wearing $100 sneakers and holding a $4 mochaccino. Don't tell me it's too expensive. It's never been cheaper to buy music."

Jesus & Mary Chain Readying New Album (Billboard)
MS: When we ended in '98, we hated each other," William Reid says. "A lot of that was down to drink and drugs. Jim's completely sober now, and I don't drink during the shows. But there is a kind of wariness. We're both aware that we could snap at each other," he said with a laugh, "but we're trying to hold it together. We love this band, and we love each other."

Five Ways to Share Music Without Getting Sued (Washington Post)
MS: We do have a few caveats, of course. In most cases you are limited to streaming music to your PC or handset, not downloading it. A couple of sites permit you to upload your own tunes for others to enjoy, but they don't work with DRM-protected music. In other words, there's nothing to stop you from sharing MP3 files that you downloaded illegally (and you know who you are, you naughty little monkeys). But music you purchased from the iTunes store--or ripped from a CD using the iTunes software? No can do.

The Money Shot: Holiday Wishes for Phil Spector, Lily Allen's Pigs, & NIN Gets Soaked With Media's Piss...

Unpacking the headlines from the past few days...

Lily Allen To Quit Music In Three Years (Gigwise)
MS: “I’d like to live in the country and have chickens and pigs.”

Oh No! Christmas Songs Again! (Huffington Post)
MS: Personally, I get a warm feeling when I hear Nat King Cole's "Christmas Song" for the first time each season. By the 50th, not so much. The Phil Spector Christmas album is still my favorite. Putting aside that he killed someone, we thank Phil for a real musical gift.

Copyright Fun (NIN.com)
MS: While I am profoundly perturbed with this stance as content owners continue to stifle all innovation in the face of the digital revolution, it is consistent with what they have done in the past. So... we are challenged at the last second to find a way of bringing this idea to life without getting splashed by the urine as these media companies piss all over each other’s feet. We have a cool and innovative site ready to launch but we're currently scratching our heads as to how to proceed.

The Money Shot: Slammin' Slacker, Dissin' Wal-Mart & The 80 Percent Minority...

More headlines...

The 80 Percent Minority (The Age)
MS: "There is general reluctance among radio stations to draw a line in the sand and say we're a female station," Stevens says. "They think they would be missing out on 50 per cent of the market but, based on our research, they would be capturing so much more because women make or influence 80 per cent of consumer purchase decisions. Radio executives think the women's market is just a niche. My answer to that is, 'Yeah, it's the 80 per cent minority.' "

Slackers (Redeye Chicago)
MS: With the Slacker Portable, "a selection of songs from your favorite artists is transferred to the Slacker portable player from your PC. New songs are added every time the player is hooked up. They are stored on the player, so you don't need an Internet connection to listen.

Hey, Dennis ... 1985 called. They want their idea back. So what you have for me is a player that chooses songs -- I can't choose them except for telling the software what music I like in general -- and then downloads them to a portable device that I can take with me anywhere I go?

Band of Horses Turn Down Wal-Mart TV Ad (Pitchfork)
MS: "Some fans, they don't even give a crap," he continued. "They're like, 'Whatever, bands got to get paid.' But at the same time, I was reluctant to do it in the back of my mind, and some fans reminded me there is a reason to feel that way about it. So once I saw our fans were let down by it, I nixed the TV commercial, and said, 'You know what, this isn't for me. Keep your money.'"

Amy Winehouse's beehive checked for drugs (NME)
MS: Usually the location of choice for storing naughty substances is inside a bra, down some pants, or inside your shoe, maybe (we've heard).

Foo Fighters singer moved by Nirvana home video (NME)
MS: "I watched this thing on YouTube of Kurt's home movies. He's hanging around with his family in a park, sitting by this stream as these little girls run around. And it broke my heart, because I knew when that was, and I knew that he wasn't necessarily happy at the time."

The Hold Steady, Art Brut and 1990s at The Granada (The Pitch)
MS: Like the drive from Minneapolis to Seattle. A three day power drive, gets kind of weird out there, no phone reception. You are out in the middle of nowhere. You have to stop and get food at a casino ... It's like 3 in the afternoon and there are four people there. Everyone walks in their pajamas and people have never heard our accents and have never met anyone from Europe before.

The Money Shot: Oasis Ain't Givin' It Away, The 100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums & The End of Movie Blockbuster Soundtracks...

More headlines...

Movie Songs No Longer Rule Pop Charts (AP)
MS: "We tried every possible song. Then I was driving to the editing room one day and I had the wedding mix from my wedding in my car. I was listening to stuff on it, it brought back memories, then `In Your Eyes' comes on. `I drive off in my car!'" he gushed, quoting Gabriel's lyrics. "It's a song about instincts! I put the pedal to the floor and we put it in the scene and it worked. Then we had to try to get the song, which is its own crusade and a really difficult thing."

Oasis: 'We'll never do a Radiohead' (NME)
MS: Oasis have quashed rumours that they were planning to release their next album with Radiohead-style pricing, with fans choosing how much to pay for the release. Frontman Liam Gallagher said he would never let an Oasis album be given away for free. Specifically, he said he would allow it to happen "over my dead body".

The Money Shot: Beck & White Stripes Hook Up, Another Record Chain Gone, Art Brut's Drinking Games & Gene Simmons Says "College Kids = Crooks"...

The latest headlines...

Interview: The Hold Steady / Art Brut (Pitchfork)
MS: Finn: The bus thing is weird. That's one thing about this tour: I'd say this tour has been very tame for us behavior wise. Because you get in the bus! And usually, the people who are gonna egg you on are the people in that city. We see enough of each other as it is. Galen's not gonna get me all riled up [laughs]. But like my friend from college, from Chicago, will. So that's one of the things, I think. Everyone goes in their own bus. Some of the night there's been drinking after-- I didn't go out last night, but these guys did. And your other band's playing tonight?

Argos: Yeah, the Art Goblins. I was gonna have a day off the drinking, but the Art Goblins is more of a drinking game than a band. [laughs]

Billboard Q&A: Gene Simmons (Billboard)
MS: The record industry doesn't have a f*cking clue how to make money. It's only their fault for letting foxes get into the henhouse and then wondering why there's no eggs or chickens. Every little college kid, every freshly-scrubbed little kid's face should have been sued off the face of the earth. They should have taken their houses and cars and nipped it right there in the beginning. Those kids are putting 100,000 to a million people out of work. How can you pick on them? They've got freckles. That's a crook. He may as well be wearing a bandit's mask.

White Stripes Team With Beck For New Songs (Billboard)
MS: Three 7" colored vinyl singles will hit store shelves Dec. 18, each with the track "Conquest" and a new song co-produced by Beck. The tracks "It's My Fault for Being Famous," "Honey, We Can't Afford to Look This Cheap" and "Cash Grab Complications on the Matter" will appear on the black, white and red version of the records, respectively, with the latter featuring an acoustic Mariachi version of "Conquest."

Music World silenced (Toronto Sun)
MS: "I haven't been in a music store for the past three years," said Richardson, who was with Dargis as she purchased Celine Dion's latest CD. "Why should I pay for it (music), if I can get it for free?" Richardson said.

The Money Shot: QOTSA offers 'Cocaine' to Rehabbers, Threatening the Arctic Monkeys, & The Threat of Girls With Guitars...

More headlines...

Arctic Monkeys under threat (NME)
MS: Arctic Monkeys' album chart record for having the fastest-selling British debut of all time looks set to be smashed by 2006 'X Factor' winner Leona Lewis. In January 2006 the band's debut album, 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' sold 363,735 in its first week of release. Lewis' debut, 'Spirit', sold 130,000 copies on its release on Monday (November 12), meaning it is on course to set a new record.

Joan Jett still loves rock'n'roll (Times Online)
MS: What riles her is the difficulty she believes still exists in getting rock music made by women to a mainstream audience. “It’s virtually been at a standstill since the Runaways,” she says. “And I can’t figure it out. It baffles me what the threat is to people from girls playing guitars.”

Queens Of The Stone Age thrown out of rehab (NME)
MS: But a spokesman for the band informed NME.COM that when the band opened the show with classic 'Feel Good Hit Of The Summer', staff at the clinic were so unimpressed that they pulled the plugs and had security remove them straight away without negotiation. The song's lyrics famously run: "Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol... c-c-c-c-c-cocaine".

The Money Shot: Rising L.A. Punk Scene, The RIAA is Subsidizing Foreign Record Labels & Is Ryan Adams Too Prolific?

The latest headlines...

Let It Rip (The New Yorker)
MS: In the early eighties, a loose aggregation of punk-rock bands, including Black Flag and X, were responsible for an explosion of musical activity in the area, and by the end of the decade the hard-rock scene in Hollywood had yielded Guns N’ Roses—along with a fashion for teased hair and tight leather pants, which helped propel the careers of similar but lesser bands. Now the punk-rock phase—which was also a golden age of skateboarding, the primary recreation for L.A. punk rockers—has been reborn in an appealingly communal form, thanks in large part to a local club called The Smell, to a noisy and often brilliant duo called No Age, and to the group’s tight circle of friends.

Tighten up: 21 good albums that could have been great EPs (AV Club)
MS: 14. Ryan Adams, Rock N Roll (2003)
People joke about how Ryan Adams records roughly an album a day, but a lot of that prolific output stems from the fact that Adams has a lot of ideas, and wants to explore as many of them as possible. Rock N Roll was Adams' attempt to pay tribute to radio-ready early-'80s rock and compete with bands like The Strokes and Hot Hot Heat, who were converting some of those same sounds into critical buzz and decent record sales. But Adams never really came up with enough decent songs to follow through fully on a not-bad impulse. He was saving his best material for the Britpop exercise Love Is Hell, a superior record that Adams' label neglected in favor of this more tossed-off effort. Rock N Roll would've been better served at a much shorter length, and with more focus on songs like "Burning Photographs," "Wish You Were Here," and "Do Miss America," which deal with the destructive impact of fast living and intense relationships.

Artists: Radio surely can afford royalty (The Hollywood Reporter)
MS: "When you cut to the chase, RIAA is asking Congress to bail out a business model that failed to adapt to the new digital age," National Association of Broadcasters spokesman Dennis Wharton said.

Wharton said the royalty would only "fund a billion-dollar transference of wealth to foreign-owned record labels that would be unfair, unwise and unwarranted."

The Money Shot - Playing with the Pipettes, Marah's W.I.P. & Thom Blows Off Macca...

The latest headlines...

That Thing They Do: From the other Brighton, the Pipettes Play with the Sugar Pop of the 60's(Boston Globe)
MS: "We think about the show as a whole, and we ask ourselves, 'What could make this more ridiculous?' " she says with a laugh, adding, "We really make an effort."

Marah Feeling Complete With 'Angels' (Billboard)
MS: Bielanko is feeling introspective these days, as the band preps this release and continues rehearsing for a tour. "This time, what was eye opening is that even five records in, we haven't reached what we can do. It still feels like a work in progress," he explains.

Radiohead frontman turned down Paul McCartney duet (NME)
MS: "My daughter was putting an album together and she put us in touch. I asked Thom to do a duet, but he said he couldn't because he only felt happy working on his own and Radiohead's material."

The Money Shot: Why You Can't Get Tickets, Chuck Prophet = Tom Petty?, People Like DRM-free MP3's (DUH!) and Sufjan's Christmas Contest...

The latest headlines...

Is The Ticket Biz Out of Line (Washington Post)
MS: Similar gripes have been ricocheting across the country for months, driven by soaring prices and increasingly aggressive efforts by resellers to sweep up tickets. Fans who strike out on the initial sale of seats to popular shows have found themselves confronting heart-stopping prices on hundreds of reseller sites -- often only minutes after promoters have posted "sold out" signs. Markups of as much as 10 times the face value are not uncommon for popular concerts, sporting events and Broadway shows.

Sufjan Stevens launches Christmas song exchange (NME)
MS: "Sufjan Sufjan's song becomes your song. You can hoard it for yourself, sell it to a major soft drink corporation, use it in your daughter's first Christmas video, or share it for free on your website. No one except Sufjan and you will hear his song, unless you decide otherwise. You get the song and all legal rights to it. We get the same rights to your song."

10 Things You Didn't Know About Chuck Prophet (Harp)
MS: 9) I get compared to Tom Petty a lot. It used to really bug me, but I’ve since made peace with the comparison. To be honest, as long as people aren’t implying that I look like a product of Florida incest, I consider it a great compliment.

DRM-free music boosts online album sales (Mac World)
MS: “The MP3 format is also good for the music industry as a whole. As physical sales on the high street and online continue to drop, it is vital that labels find a way to increase digital album sales to make up the shortfall. In order for music industry revenues to flourish again, all four majors need to get on board and make music available to the consumer in the format of their choice,”

The Money Shot: Thurston Moore's Ringtone, MP3 Blogs Killing Music?, Top 100 Rock Movies and Let the Radio Boycott of Lyle Lovett Begin...

The latest headlines...

Lovett will go to bat for radio royalties (Reuters)
MS: Lovett, whose sound crosses over traditional music barriers, is expected to testify in support of the royalty for the MusicFirst (Fairness in Radio Starting Today) Coalition, which is comprised of artists groups including the American Federation of Musicians, the Recording Industry Assn. of America, SoundExchange, the Recording Artists Coalition and the American Association of Independent Music.

Guest List: Thurston Moore (Pitchfork)
MS: I think my ringtone is called "science fiction" [laughs]. Which is kind of cool because when you're playing a CD in a car and the science fiction ringtone goes off, it sounds good with every track. Sometimes it'll be going and I'm like, "Wow, that's so cool that they put that in their song," and I'm like, "Oh, it's my fucking phone."

The 100 Greatest Rock & Roll Movies of All Time (Blender)
MS: 45. Smells like a documentary
Hype! (1996)
Soundgarden and Pearl Jam are among the subjects of this documentary filmed at the height of the “Seattle Sound.” Recalling a time when threadbare flannel was the acme of poser fashion, what could have been an embarrassing testament to rock arrogance instead becomes a funny cautionary tale about perils of, well, hype. Ends with the prophetic title “Your Town Is Next.”
Best musical moment: Nirvana perform “Smells Like Teen Spirit” live for the first time. (35:00)
Did you know? Mudhoney singer Mark Arm, interviewed in the film, is one of many to lay claim to the term “grunge.”

If you love music, stop taking it for free (The Guardian)
MS: "MP3 blogs have greatly decreased the sale of our singles," he writes. "They didn't exist when we released [the Rapture's] House of Jealous Lovers and we sold 20,000 copies quickly. Now there are thousands of blogs and we sell, on average, 2,000 to 5,000 copies of a 12-inch single."

The Money Shot: Death to DRM, Zutons Say "Kaisers Suck", Horses Say "Bloggers Suck", Researchers Discover Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll

The latest headlines...

Southern Comfort: An Interview with Band of Horses' Ben Bridwell (Popmatters)
MS: Speaking of the ubiquitous presence of the hyper-critical indie bloggers Bridwell says: “To me it’s just sad. I just don’t like it. I think it’s a sick, sad little fucking aspect, that I don’t know if society as a whole has gotten into, or maybe it’s just the indie community, where people need gossip and they need fucking rumors and they need information and they need it fast. New York as a whole is a bit scary in that way where you come in and everyone seems like they write a blog. Everything’s so amplified there. It’s not a good feeling to me. I just try not to worry about that stuff and just know that the things I like are playing shows.”

Music DRM 'dead by next summer' (The Register)
MS: "By next summer all four major labels will have removed DRM from MP3s," he predicted.

The Zutons attack Kaiser Chiefs (NME)
MS: Speaking about the differences between Mark Ronson's covers of 'Valerie' and Kaiser Chiefs' 'Oh My God', drummer Sean Payne said: "We're better musicians than him [Wilson] to be honest".

Payne picked up on the fact Wilson admitted he forgot how to sing his version of 'Oh My God' and ended up singing Ronson's version instead.

Alarming Study Reveals Rampant Drug, Alcohol Use in Pop Music (Bloomberg)
MS: As a result, the study revealed, impressionable teens are getting the impression that drugs and alcohol are fun. Among the survey's straight-faced revelations are that substance abuse is ``commonly associated with partying (54 percent), sex (46 percent), violence (29 percent) and/or humor (24 percent) in songs that impressionable teenagers listen to.

The report did not disclose what substances, if any, the researchers were on when they were drawing their conclusions.

The Money Shot: Radiohead Call Bullshit on Sales Reports, Novoselic Blogs, The Killers Suck Up 2 Elton & Honestly, Are U Stealing Music at Work?

More headlines...

Krist Novoselic's SW Debut: Smells Like (Put Word Here) Spirit (Seattle Weekly)
MS: I don’t do a lot of Nirvana interviews. I could do a documentary interview about the band everyday, forever! For better or worse, the digital revolution is the great leveler. You don’t need the volume of knowledge regarding shutter speeds, light conditions for film stock or other expensive aspects of celluloid.

Most companies fail to block music threat (Reuters)
MS: Two-thirds of IT managers polled said they do not block employees from taking music off the Web, even though they named it as the biggest threat.

Radiohead Deny Reports That 60 Percent Of Fans Paid Nothing For In Rainbows (MTV)
MS: In the statement, Radiohead said the comScore data was "wholly inaccurate" and that it "in no way reflected definitive market intelligence or, indeed, the true success of the project." To date, neither Radiohead nor their U.S. publicist, Steve Martin, have agreed to discuss any of the financial aspects of the download scheme, including how many copies were sold or how much fans paid on average.

Denying that the average non-freeloader fan paid only $6 for the download, as suggested by comScore's report, the group's representatives also stressed in the statement that "as the album could only be downloaded from the band's Web site, it is impossible for outside organizations to have accurate figures on sales."

Killers' new alibi: Lou Reed (Baltimore Sun)
MS: Do you have plans to work with other artists you admire?

If there comes a time. It would be nice to work with somebody new, you know? It seems like nobody gets together enough anymore. It would be nice to do something with Elton John or something.

The Money Shot: The London Undersound, Okkervil River Are Equal-Opportunity Offenders, Music = Freeware? and Cracker Wants To Sleep On Your Couch...

Even more headlines...

Okkervil River: questioning what's really genuine (Drowned In Sound)
MS: I’ve had conservatives tell me that they can no longer listen to the band because that song offends them, but I’ve also had liberals tell me that they can no longer listen to us because that song is kind of politically ambiguous, that it isn’t enough of a ‘protest’ song. I find that personally gratifying, because I’d feel like I was doing something wrong if I weren’t able to alienate people on both sides of an issue.

Grass-roots tour preserves Cracker's ageless crispness (Des Moines Register)
MS: "You need to go out and tour ... and promote yourself in a grass-roots manner, the way we always did," Lowery explained a couple of weeks ago while at his "second home" (his girlfriend's) in Athens, Ga. "The way we did in Camper Van Beethoven: We were going around playing the punk rock bars in Iowa City and Lincoln, Nebraska, and Lawrence, Kansas, and Austin, Texas. We went out and slept on people's couches."

Music Sharing Plans for London Undersound (PC World)
MS: Each station would have a unique set of tracks specific to that area of the city, making the act of traveling and then the sharing of music part of a social experience, Brewer said. Using their mobiles, people would be able to share tracks via Bluetooth while they're riding the Tube, as well as upload music at Underground stations.

Making music in a world of freeloaders
(CNET)
MS: The pick-your-own price idea isn't novel. Software developers have offered so-called freeware applications for decades. The idea being that the free stuff would entice some people to upgrade to the more feature-rich versions which cost real money. Even though you'd be hard pressed to find many companies that struck it rich going that route, it was, at the very least, good publicity.
