The Money Shot: 7.20.07

Today's headlines...

They've Got It Covered (New York Post)
The Money Shot: What are the best covers of all time? They're the versions that make you forget there was ever an original, Janis Joplin doing "Me and Bobby McGee" or Soft Cell's take on "Tainted Love." Or, perhaps, it's a track that's so brilliantly redone in a different style, it finds a whole new generation of fans - such as Cake's understated redo of Gloria Gaynor's disco-hit "I Will Survive," or Johnny Cash's heartwrenching take on synth gods Depeche Mode.

Farrell Taking Lollapalooza Into The Green, Black (Billboard)
MS: Farrell reminded the press, Lollapalooza is "first and foremost a music festival," and he's ready for a full weekend with 130 acts slated for the nine stages. "We're going to have generations there," Farrell noted, specifying Iggy Pop & the Stooges and Patti Smith, who he called "the female counterpart to Iggy Pop." He explained that Smith's performance will provide context for the likes of Amy Winehouse and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. "I think when all these women get together it will be ... fantastic and magical."

Smiths reunion ruled out by bassist and drummer (NME)
MS: Former bassist with The Smiths Andy Rourke has quashed hopes for a future Smiths reunion, insisting Morrissey is impossible to even contact, let alone coax into reforming... "He makes himself unavailable. He only communicates in postcards. But I suppose time is a great healer, and can change your perception of people," he told fans, implying they would have to patch up their relationship before any reunion could take place.
