The Money Shot: 7.26.07

Today's headlines...

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Working Slowly On New Tunes (Billboard)
The Money Shot: "It shows the raw, sexual side of us that's been there since day one. It's something as natural to us as flying is to birds,"

Von Bondies Roar Back With 'Love, Hate' (Billboard)
MS: "When we got off of touring 'Pawn Shoppe Heart,' we were so exhausted," Stollsteimer recalls. "In my own head, I was like, 'I don't want to ever do it again.' But these three years have revived my energy to do it again. I wanted to get out and keep the momentum going, of course, but the truth is the momentum wasn't, like, millions of records, although it was really good. Most people knew us as the band who sang this one song ('C'mon C'mon') and not really who the band was or anything like that. So in that regard it didn't make sense to put out records two years ago. It wouldn't have been as good as it is today."

Off The Record (Prospect Magazine)
MS: Groups used to tour, often at a loss, to stimulate sales of their latest album. Now it's the other way around. Hence the widely reported decision earlier this year by the Crimea, a band previously signed to Warner Bros, to release their new album as a free download. The band explained this not as an anarcho-hippie gesture in support of the principle that music ought to be free, but as a sensible promotional tactic. Their hope is that by disseminating their music online, they will expand their fan base and increase their returns from touring. Having seen the small size of the cheques they got from Warner, they know where not to look for their future income.
