The Money Shot: 8.14.07

Today's headlines...

Corporate Sponsor or Corporate Censor? (Chicago Sun-Times)
The Money Shot: What was the benefit to Pearl Jam from this corporate sponsorship? The musicians clearly feel they were unjustly silenced on the Web (they plan to make the unedited song available on their site soon), and they'll forever suffer the indignity of seeing hundreds of pictures of themselves performing on a stage adorned with the name "AT&T," as if they endorse that company's actions.

Google key to latest iTunes challenge (AZ Central)
MS: Songs at gBox cost 99 cents each. For the Universal songs that are part of the test, gBox will offer an MP3 version free of copy-protection technology known as digital-rights management, or DRM. A DRM-enabled version will be available at the same price.

Wilco cancel upcoming tour dates (NME)
MS: "We're sorry to report that our good friend and Wilco guitarist extraordinaire Nels Cline has recently contracted a rather nasty case of the CHICKEN POX (not sure that should be in all caps... but judging from the gruesome details in email correspondence we've had with NC, we'll leave it so).

Feist Pulls the Plug on Her Website (LiveDaily)
MS: I've decided to take this site OFFLINE (for a while).

Why? Because of my analogue mind and the fact(s) that I couldn't recognize myself in it, it was being mismanaged, it had been attacked by porn spammers, it wasn't beautiful and it played one song at you like a bad TV commercial as soon
as you innocently entered.

Vedder, Sonic Youth, Tweedy Do Dylan For Soundtrack (Billboard)
MS: A host of rock notables have banded together for the soundtrack to Todd Haynes' Bob Dylan-themed film "I'm Not There," due Oct. 30 via Columbia. More than 30 tracks have been recorded for what is intended to be a double-disc set, including songs from Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Stephen Malkmus, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and X's John Doe.

Doctors order Winehouse to rest (BBC News)
MS: A spokesman for the 23-year-old said: "She is resting under doctor's orders." He declined to comment on newspaper reports that the star was going to rehab for treatment for drug problems.
