The Money Shot 10.28.05

With all eyes rightfully on the Bush Administration today, it's a light newsday elsewhere...

Courtney sued by her own lawyers
The Money Shot: A Seattle law firm claims that Love owes them more than $340,000 U.S. for work they did in securing publishing rights and other materials from her grunge hubby, Kurt Cobain. (karma anyone?)

Meet We Are Scientists
The Money Shot: "I don't know why everybody thinks we're gigantic nerds, but the photographer took one look at us and decided we'd be dressed as academics. I came in wearing a burgundy sweater-vest, and they took that off me and put on an uglier burgundy sweater-vest. Same item, they just didn't want it to be mine."

U2's Tribute to Rosa Parks
The Money Shot: Before 'One' was played singer Bono said of Parks that "because of her quiet dignity and strength, America became a better, changed country. This song is dedicated to the mother of American civil rights movement Rosa Parks God Bless you in your rest".

Sharon Osbourne Rips Babyshambles' Pete Doherty
The Money Shot: "Pete Doherty needs to ditch the hangers-on and find someone who really loves him enough to tell him the truth. He needs to go through some hardcore rehab. That will strip him of any notion of celebrity, they should be telling him, 'you're the same as everybody else. You're a fucking addict'. It's his only chance of survival because I'm terrified the poor little thing's gonna OD. Now he thinks this is a part he has to play, it's become like a character to play out. People want to see that. It's obvious he's very insecure. He's not confident because he wouldn't do it if he was."

Ryan Adams Sets Date for Third 2005 CD Release
The Money Shot: "That one's really fucked up. It has nine songs, and all the songs are nine minutes long, they're all story-songs. And it's basically just me and a piano, me and a guitar, with [producer] Ethan [Johns]. It's really cerebral. The theme of it was that I wanted to write a record where I could write myself out of my twenties. So for each year of my life, in my twenties, I kind of assigned different parts of my character, I gave them names. The last song is a song from the perspective, believe it or not, of a ghost. When it's just passed out of a body, and it goes 'Don't go to the light/ I'll show you how to haunt.' This spirit is trying to conjure this dead child, this dead person, back to the house where they died. So they can haunt it. It's really fucked up."

The Money Shot 10.27.05

Will the Arctic Monkeys really quit before they've begun? Clap Your Hands Say Yeah too full of themselves? Read on...

Arctic Monkeys Diss Kaiser Chiefs
The Money Shot: "I think if we're next year's Kaiser Chiefs, we'll quit. I don't like being associated with them. I don't think they had the same following as us last year. I suppose they've sold a lot of records, but I don't like them. They're a bit annoying."

Hollywood's Cash Tribute
The Money Shot: Like his friend Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis has measured the dark side of life, which adds shadows to his voice when he sings something like "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." On Tuesday night, there was even more poignancy when Lewis sang that grand old spiritual because he did so in tribute to Cash. The only problem was that, a few bars into the song, Lewis was awkwardly cut off so that movie stars Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon could come on stage, smile into the television camera and properly introduce the singer. Lewis looked a bit bewildered for a moment but then gamely relaunched the song.

Ben Folds' Aussie DVD
The Money Shot: Due Dec. 6 via Epic, "Ben Folds and WASO Live in Perth" finds the artist and the Western Australia Symphony Orchestra running through 13 selections, including "Brick," "The Ascent of Stan" and "Rock This B*tch."

New Neko Case CD
The Money Shot: Says Case about Fox: "I recorded the album intermittently over the past couple years. With each record, you think you've figured it out, but once you get into the studio, you realize there's always more to learn. But I feel like we managed to get all my ideas to tape."

Vanderslice's Demons
The Money Shot: I was a little afraid of what I was gonna do," he admits. "I was having these unhealthy, supremely morbid thoughts, and I'm already a morbid guy, so if I can shock myself, then that's really something! And [Mountain Goats leader] John Darnielle, who I was working on new material with at the time, was like, 'Man, I'm really worried about you.' When friends who are as crazy as you are are worried about you, that's a sign."

Paste Disses Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
The Money Shot: With all the hype—from blogs, webzines and the like—surrounding Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, you might wonder if the attention will go to the band’s collective head. After discovering lead singer Alec Ounsworth prefers email interviews, you might even wonder if he’s become too big for his indie-rock britches.

Franz Ferdinand Talks Songwriting
The Money Shot: "That's where the best characters come from, the people that surround you," he said. "And then taking them and sort of combining them with all sorts of other things that happen to be flinging through your head at that particular time."

The Money Shot 10.25.05

The latest headlines, MJ style...

Liz Phair's Oral Fixation
The Money Shot: "I'm all about podcasting," Phair tells Billboard.com. "I'm totally fixated on it. It's what I'm into. We usually do a couple of live songs and then there are interviews. We're going to do it every Friday. It might be a little late here and there, but pretty much [it's up] every Friday."

Bruce Gets Sirius
The Money Shot: "E Street Radio will offer SIRIUS subscribers a unique perspective on 30 years of socially conscious music, and set the background for even more relevant songs to come in the future," said Scott Greenstein, SIRIUS President of Entertainment and Sports. "It will be the most comprehensive presentation ever of Bruce’s music and a true inside look at the work and artistry of an American icon."

Rivers Ain't Getting Any
The Money Shot: "I decided to try celibacy because I heard it would help the meditation, and I tried meditation because I heard it would help with the music," he said. "So, it all really comes back to the music.

Jack White Loves the U.K.
The Money Shot: "There's a different attitude that comes through in every place," he said. "As a performer you have to come through and try hard to gauge that - particularly us, because we don't follow a setlist."

Devendra says "Duuuuuude"
The Money Shot: "I knew four hermaphrodites in Caracas," he begins, maybe not really helping matters. "I was thinking about them and I wanted to write a song from the perspective of all four of them combined. So it's a song about a schizophrenic hermaphrodite."

The Frames Like America More than England
The Money Shot: What I like about America is that it doesn’t really dig arrogance. There’s this whole cultural personality in England where it’s all full coat and no knickers, you know? It’s all fucked. And with Ireland as a nation, we’ve seen these bands coming over from England and we tend to react the same way the Americans do — it’s just like "Get off, get out of our country."

and finally...

Your Grandparents Kick Axl Rose's Ass
The Money Shot: According to the results of the magazine's latest poll, which can be found in the new "Cool" issue, Rose, at the ripe age of 43, is one of the world's coolest old people. He ranked second in the survey (that's 10,000 girls worldwide, with about 4,000 of them U.S. citizens), right behind top vote-getter "grandparents." Whose grandparents? Everyone's grandparents, it seems.

Music That Sucks 10.25.05

This week's collection of actual new releases that are 100% guaranteed to suck...
  • Captain & Tennille - Songs of Joy: The Complete Collection (Because someone might need to replace those scratchy vinyl copies of "Muskrat Love".)
  • ‘N Sync - Greatest Hits (Please guys... just say "Bye Bye Bye")
  • The Bacon Brothers - White Knuckles (Somehow I don't think there could ever be enough degrees of separation between me and this CD...)
  • Bette Midler - Sings the Peggy Lee Songbook (Quick... name two things we don't need... First, a Peggy Lee Songbook... Second, Bette Midler to be messin' with it...)
  • Tony Orlando & Dawn - A Christmas Reunion (Their first new album in 28 years... which begs the question 'Why now?')
  • Aloha Margaritaville: Hawaiian Tribute to Jimmy Buffet (Isn't this kinda redundant?)
  • Various Artists - An All Star Tribute to Cher (Rumor has it that Tiffany appears on this one, which shows just how deadly serious they were about paying tribute...)
  • Various Artists - Pickin' on Def Leppard: A Bluegrass Tribute (Because hillbilly strippers need something to dance to?)
  • Various Artists - Smooth Sax Tribute to Norah Jones (FINALLY... someone to take the rough edges off Norah Jones.)
  • Goblin Cock - Bagged and Boarded (Worst. Bandname. Ever.)

Buy These Now! 10.25.05

Better late than never. Here are the MJ artists that hit the stores yesterday with new releases. Highlights are the Rubber Soul and Bloodshot Records tributes, along with the US release of the Tom Vek CD that's been red-hot over in the U.K. Overall, I'd give the week a "B-".
  • Antony & the Johnsons - You Are My Sister EP
  • Marc Broussard - Bootleg to Benefit the Victims of Hurricane Katrina
  • The Fiery Furnaces - Rehearsing My Choir
  • They Might Be Giants - Here Come the ABCs
  • They Might Be Giants - They Got Lost
  • Tom Vek - We Have Sound
  • Various Artists - This Bird Has Flown: A 40th Anniversary Tribute to the Beatles' Rubber Soul
  • Various Artists - For a Decade of Sin: 11Years of Bloodshot Records

The Money Shot 10.24.05

Today's new stories...

U2, Foos, Others Honor Cash
The Money Shot: U2, Foo Fighters, Norah Jones and Jerry Lee Lewis are among the luminaries set to perform at "I Walk the Line: A Night for Johnny Cash."

Cuomo Back to Finish Degree
The Money Shot: Harvard's spring term begins February 1, and when Weezer appeared on Howard Stern's radio show earlier this week, Cuomo said he plans on living in an on-campus dorm at the university and that he's currently three classes short of completing his undergraduate degree.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Leak New CD Details
The Money Shot: The untitled record is due for release in March this year. Speaking to fans online, singer Karen O revealed the titles of two songs, and said some of the older tracks worked on in the sessions may still see the light of day, despite not featuring on the album. She told a fan website: "Songs to be included on the new album include 'Cheated Hearts' and 'Honey Bear'. All the rest are new tracks. Some older tracks such as 'Down Boy' used in a special EP, but only MAYBE."

Death Cab Selling Out?
The Money Shot: Walla said he doesn't feel the band is "selling out" by allowing songs to be used in mainstream venues as long as "outlets don't become more important than the fact that we've been a band for eight years, touring and making records for a long time".

Arctic Monkeys Click with Online Fans
The Money Shot: "There is a massive online community out there," says Laurence Bell, the owner of Domino. "They are constantly exchanging tracks, passing it on, raving about it - check this out, go to this gig. They are bypassing traditional marketing routes, and the mainstream media, which is what major record companies have a grasp of and a hold on. Nobody's telling them to do it; that's the key. Basically, these kids are making the decisions."

and last (and probably least)...

Village People's Cop now among Most Wanted
The Money Shot: Legal troubles for the Village People's original frontman and cop, Victor Willis, mounted Thursday when he failed to show up in court for his sentencing on felony drug and weapons charges.

The Money Shot 10.21.05

From Michael Stipe's lunchbox to iPod porn... Loads of stuff to read as we head to the weekend...

New Drive-By Truckers by Spring
The Money Shot: "We're at that point where we've cut enough songs, but I'm not quite sure where the final edit's gonna go," he says. "It could go three pretty radically different directions -- to me there's one that's probably a little more obvious, so most likely that's what'll happen. But things can always change when you have this many crazy, temperamental people in a room," he adds with a chuckle.

Chris Martin Outbids Bono for Stipe's Lunchbox
The Money Shot: The Coldplay man snapped his mentor's sandwich holder at a charity auction on October 16, outbidding Bono for the REM memento.

Light of Day Goes Bi-Coastal and Then Some
The Money Shot: Joe Grushecky & the Houserockers, who have for the past five years been joined onstage by Bruce Springsteen, will headline the Nov. 5 show at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville. Also on the bill will be Yorn, Malin, Garland Jeffreys, Willie Nile and several local acts.

The End of the Stripes?
The Money Shot: A multitude of news sources are reporting this week that the White Stripes are set to split in 2006 -- but is it accurate? Jack White, half of the duo, announced earlier this year that he was forming a new band with longtime friend Brendan Benson, but in a recent Rolling Stone interview, Jack stated that the White Stripes were not at risk. Unfortunately, that segment of the interview is not excerpted on the website.

New Pornographers Not a Supergroup?
The Money Shot: The camaraderie is what makes the New Pornographers' traveling caravan work, Newman said. "We always knew it was going to be difficult for this band to function as a touring band. But we've made it work any way we can, because we have a good time."

Kaiser Chiefs Hang With Foo Fighters
The Money Shot: "People say, 'Dave Grohl, really nice guy,' but he genuinely is the nicest guy I've met in a long time," Kaiser frontman Ricky Wilson said via cell phone from somewhere near Champaign, Illinois. "The other night I'd gone to bed, but Nick [Baines, keyboardist] and Simon [Rix, bassist] were going to a pub across the road from the venue and it was after the Foo Fighters had played and you can imagine the pub near the venue is just full of people at the end of show, right? And Dave Grohl goes with them and just walks up and has a drink. And then apparently there were these two acoustic guitar guys and Dave did 'Everlong' with one of the guys, and it's like the best moment of the guy's life. And then Nick, Simon and Dave played 'I Predict a Riot' in this bar. Yeah, that was the wrong night to take an early night."

Patti Smith to Appear At ROCKRGRL
The Money Shot: From November 10-12, the Madison Renaissance Hotel in Seattle will host the world's largest gathering of female musicians when the ROCKRGRL Music Conference 2005 rolls into town to celebrate all aspects of the stronger sex's place in rock music industry. Patti Smith will be honored with the "Woman of Valor" award at a special conference kickoff banquet on November 10, which just happens to fall on the 30th anniversary of the release of her classic debut album, Horses. Smith will also play a set with longtime accomplice Lenny Kaye.

Live in Chicago - U2 DVD Coming
The Money Shot: U2 are to release a live DVD featuring footage shot on their 2005 'Vertigo' world tour.'Vertigo 2005/U2 Live From Chicago' was filmed on May 9 and 10 at the city's United Center venue.

and finally... this didn't take long

Video iPod gets a little steamier
The Money Shot: At least one unambiguously adult site, Povpod.com, has also released content for the device.

Friday's Random 10

Ok, everyone... pull out your iPod, hit shuffle and tell us all the first 10 songs that play...

Oliver's Army - Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Before Bono... Lennon

Sometimes it's hard to remember that it's been almost 25 years, a whole generation, since we saw John Lennon alive. So much has happened since then, that it becomes easy to say the Beatles were overrated when you take them out of the context of their times. But I don't think there would be a Bono without a Lennon (or a Dylan)...

A solitary white piano at a thought-provoking John Lennon retrospective in Paris invites visitors to play the song that everyone knows but, in these times of terrorism and war, few seem to hear ... "Imagine all the people living life in peace."

That Lennon, 25 years after his murder, still comes across as a hopeless dreamer is itself a sad indictment of how little progress the world has made toward achieving the lofty and, yes, perhaps utopian, goal he expressed in song.

The Money Shot 10.20.05

Today's top stories...

Bono Goes To Washington
The Money Shot: Speaking recently about meeting with world leaders, Bono said he had nothing to fear. He explained: "They should be afraid, because they will be held accountable for what happened on their watch. I'm representing the poorest and the most vulnerable people. On a spiritual level, I have that with me. I'm throwing a punch, and the fist belongs to people who can't be in the room, whose rage, whose anger, whose hurt I represent. The moral force is way beyond mine, it's an argument that has much more weight than I have. So I'm not feeling nervous."

Rilo Kiley + (Death Cab x Bright Eyes) = Traveling Wilburys??
The Money Shot: "I've always loved the Traveling Wilburys, and I thought about who could sing the different parts. And I thought, well, Ben could play Roy, because his voice is so pure and beautiful, and of course I thought of Conor doing the Dylan part, which I think is pretty awesome and humorous in its own right."

MySpace Goes On Tour
The Money Shot: Now the site has picked five of its best and brightest up-and-coming acts to travel the country for nearly two months on the MySpace Fall Tour, which kicks off in Dallas October 26 at The Door.

Audioslave Takes on War
The Money Shot: "It has overtones,” Cornell said, “of a story that's happening right now in this country where we have to deal with the reality that young children are losing their fathers or their mothers or, you know, their brothers for something that I don't think anybody agrees with at this point is a very smart idea or ever was a smart idea."

Keane to Release DVD
The Money Shot: 'Strangers' will feature an hour-long documentary telling the story of the band from their formation in 1997 to touring the world in 2005. The package will also include 16 live performances from different venues across the globe, two photo galleries, six promo videos, two 'making of' videos and various concert visuals.

Wolf Parade Hits the Road
The Money Shot: "Well, we're basically, totally, a fuckin' train wreck," he says. "We get yelled at every day. We show up late. We leave shit behind [at clubs]. The kinda shit a five-headed retarded dog would do! We pissed on ourselves yesterday! I'm not kidding. "

and finally...

Poor, poor Ricky Martin...
The Money Shot: "There was a moment (in 2002) when I was onstage and I was just so angry...I thought, 'Something is wrong. I have the applause, I have a great band behind me, I live comfortably.' ... I was starting to become a victim of fame. Everything was too serious and I wasn't enjoying it."

The Money Shot 10.19.05

With musicians showing the imagination of the typical movie executive, the theme for today's news is repackaging old shit...

Beck Retreads 'Guero'
The Money Shot: Beck is eyeing a Dec. 6 release for the Interscope project "Guerolito," which will feature a remix of every track on his latest studio album, "Guero."

Hives are Buzzin' on new live DVD
The Money Shot: The band is currently soliciting photographs from fans to be included on the DVD. But not just any photo. According to the Hives' website, "The pictures you send in are of course supposed to have some connection to The Hives. Not just you in a tuxedo. Not just you in no clothes at all."

The Killers Retread 'Hot Fuss'... again
The Money Shot: Having already reissued its Island debut, "Hot Fuss" in an expanded edition, the Killers will on Nov. 22 offer a boxed set featuring individual 7-inch vinyl singles for every track on the album.

Blur EP yet this year?
The Money Shot: "I can't really make another Blur record that's a big landscape sort of thing, due to my very basic guitar ability. I want to sing and play so it has to be three chords. I can only do three chords and not look at the guitar."

Los Lobos Retread 'Kiko'
The Money Shot: Los Lobos has announced it will recreate its classic 1992 album Kiko in its entirety at five West Coast shows this December.

Ferdinand Takes Manhatten Alive
The Money Shot: There was even a Spinal Tap moment when one of the panels of the backdrop got stuck — leaving the giant blowup of Thomson's face smack in the middle of the band's logo — before shuddering and then gradually moving into the correct position as a presumably frantic stagehand fixed it.

Before Weezer - Elisha Cuthbert?
The Money Shot: "We are exploring the history of Weezer. It's the Weezer prequel, if you will, and we're going to document the early days of the band," he explained. "A lot of people don't know this, but before Weezer was Weezer, they were a band called Weeze. Rivers [Cuomo] was just a roadie for the band, and they had a totally hot female singer."

The Posies Retread Themselves
The Money Shot: “In the past, we weren’t that grown up,” Stringfellow explains. “We weren’t very strong people, probably. Being young, we didn’t trust ourselves or each other to really have a very open atmosphere. The situation was fairly controlled in the studio, and that’s kinda worked. But this is much more free and much more creative.”

and finally this...

NYT Keeps an Eye on Video iPods
The Money Shot: Watching iPodvision also requires one free hand to hold the device, which feels awkward after a while. Remember, too, that in urban settings, where iPods are muggers’ favorite delicacies, you have to hold the thing out in full view. You feel like you’re wearing a bumper sticker that says: “I’m an idiot. Rob me.”

The Money Shot 10.18.05

Jack cheats on Meg, Melissa smokes dope, Liz whines...

Jack White's New Duo
The Money Shot: "I don't want it to sound anything like the White Stripes," says Jack White of his newest project, the Raconteurs. "This is a full-on band -- dual songwriters coming together, building off one another, bouncing off each other."

The Frames Just Want to Be Understood
The Money Shot: "Because we make all different types of music, a lot of labels kind of felt like 'Yeah, we really like your band, and we like your songs, but we don't really know how to market you.' And it just felt like an issue for us with the labels." His voice rises a bit as he mimics some demanding label brass. "'Are you a pop group? Are you an indie rock group? What are you? What do you do?' We just never really gave an answer. So we didn't try, and it frustrated people and it happened with every label they put on us. We felt we were constantly being misrepresented and they felt that we were constantly fucking complaining."

Melissa Gets High
The Money Shot: When Phillips asked her whether or not her doctors approved of her toking up, Etheridge replied: "Every single one was, 'Oh, yeah. That's the best help for the effects of chemotherapy.' "

Son Volt on NPR Concert This Friday
The Money Shot: Hear the roots rock group Son Volt live online this Friday, Oct. 21 beginning at approximately 10:00 p.m. ET. NPR.org will webcast the band's full performance from the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. live online.

Still Liz?
The Money Shot: "It wasn't a happy experience for me," Phair says. "I went from just being this person in the neighbourhood, to having all kinds of people saying things about me. 'She can't sing. She can't play. It's just because she talks about sex. She's a media whore.' People forget about those things. But I don't forget."

Neil Spends a Week with Conan
The Money Shot: "I wanted two solid months of Neil Young, but he told me it was, 'getting creepy,'...

Franz Ferdinand Releases DVD in November
The Money Shot: "The karaoke videos are really cheesy, abstract stuff. Like, a couple running through a field, people partying and dancing, all sorts of weird stuff,"

Ryan Adams' Hygiene
The Money Shot: "It's a pain in the arse," he told Rolling Stone. "I've got a rather large cyst lodged where my ear ends and my temple begins. Right now we're waiting for it to get uninfected enough to get in there and tear some more shit out."

Music That Sucks 10.18.05

As the holidays get closer, the crap piles higher...
  • Simply Red - Simplified (Simply…no!)
  • Ashlee Simpson - I Am Me (Music to lipsync by…)
  • Rod Stewart - Thanks for the Memory...The Great American Songbook: Vol. IV (This is not my father’s Rod Stewart… more likely it's my grandma’s Rod)
  • Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass - Christmas Album (Apparently it’s a good day for grandma…)
  • The Fixx - The Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Anthology (Anyone been wondering what they’ve been doing since 1983's “One Thing Leads To Another”?… anyone?... anyone?... Hello??)
  • Various Artists - VH1 Classic Metal Mania: Stripped Volume 2 - The Anthems (Revenge of the Hair Bands… uh, volume two???)
  • Various Artists - Martha Stewart Living Music: Classical Music for the Holidays, Jazz for the Holidays and Traditional Songs for the Holidays (C’mon… this has GOT to be some kind of parole violation!)

Buy These Now! 10.18.05

Not much in terms of volume this week, but the unquestioned highlight is the double shot of releases from my Philly bros, Marah. Run, don't walk to get 'em! Overall, the week rates a "C-", but it's ain't the Bielankos fault...
  • Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel
  • Marah - If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry
  • Marah - A Christmas Kind of Town
  • Various Artists - To: KATE - A Benefit for Kate's Sake (featuring Xmas songs by John Prine, Steve Earle and others)
  • Various Artists - Chumscrubber Soundtrack (featuring songs from Snow Patrol, Eels, Cat Power and more)
  • Melissa Etheridge - The Road Less Traveled: Greatest Hits

The Money Shot 10.17.05

A slow news day...

Radiohead to Tour?
The Money Shot: Greenwood added that there's "exciting talk of shows next year", although no dates are currently confirmed.

Free Tweedy Cat in NYC
The Money Shot: Free shows in November in NYC by a variety of artists including Cat Power, Jeff Tweedy, Ryan Adams and others.

Franz Ferdinand hope to not recreate 'douche bag' comments
The Money Shot: "The night the single came out I got thrown out of a bar, they called me a 'Douche bag' and I ended up fighting a barman -I won't be recreating that for good luck."

Death Cab Tastes Majors Success
The Money Shot: "I feel like it's really tricky to make a good rock record for $4,000. You can make a pretty great record for four times that much money. But there comes a point when you say, 'Why are you in the Bahamas?' Are you on Vacation? Making a record isn't a vacation."

The Money Shot 10.14.05

Today's news on MJ artists...

Son Volt's Not Done Yet
The Money Shot: "I try to avoid being strident. It seems to turn people away. At most, I'd like to provoke discussion of some things, but it's not like I have answers," he said. Then he chuckled, "As of yet, I haven't been asked to play any peace marches."

Greg Dulli Goes Direct
The Money Shot: "If we sell 5,000 of this ourselves," McPherson says, "it's equivalent to selling 40,000 on a label."

Sleater-Kinney makes music because it's compelled to
The Money Shot: "As far as playing old songs, some don't fit into the set with the new material," Weiss said. "And some we get sick of and move out of rotation, like 'Words and Guitar,' 'I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone,' 'Little Babies.' Some of the big hit songs we get sick of, but they usually come back. We just don't want to play a song because we have to."

Decemberists Happy to Avoid Buzz
The Money Shot: "I think on the last record we established the Decemberists sound. It's exciting to say, here's who we've become. Here are the avenues we can explore. I think we're just looking on the next record to go further. I'm sure it'll backfire and no one will buy it because they'll have only heard the last record and they'll say, 'What the fuck is this? What's this 48-minute jam with a 12-string guitar and flute bullshit? [laughs]"

Kaiser Chiefs Get New Frontman?
The Money Shot: "I'm a big fan of the Kaiser Chiefs but often thought they could do with a better lead singer. Now they're going to have one. I've also been very impressed by my own radio shows but thought that there must be a better presenter available. Now we have one of those as well."

And finally...

Ok, But Where Do I Plug In My Headphones?
The Money Shot: Computer chips that store music could soon be built into a woman's breast implants. One boob could hold an MP3 player and the other the person's whole music collection.

The Random 10

Time again to load up the MP3 player of choice, hit shuffle and report the first 10 songs...

The Money Shot 10.13.05

From my fingertips to your eyes...

U2 Not Into Political Fund-raising
The Money Shot: "Neither DATA nor Bono are involved in these (fund-raisers), and they cannot be controlled. The U2 concerts are categorically not fund-raisers for any politician - they are rock concerts for U2 fans."

Wilco to Play Katrina Benefit, Push Back Live Album
The Money Shot: Wilco's John Stirratt said in a press release, "The city is so vulnerable now, and with so much money being directed there, we need to avoid unnecessary loss in architecture and musical culture."

Coldplay Admits to Cross-Dressing?
The Money Shot: "We've everything to prove and we've finished phase one of Coldplay and now we're going to enter phase two, which could be the Abba phase it could be the transvestite phase, who knows, but it'll definitely be good."

Full Frontal Strokes?
The Money Shot: "We're doing a live performance at a radio station [in the video], which will be broadcast all across New York," he explained. "There might be full-frontal nudity. MTV will not play this video because it's so controversial, [but] it will be groundbreaking."

Queens Of The Stone Age battle the undead
The Money Shot: "Nothing can extinguish the eerie visual melee that Lynch serves up hot, because it's a story so fantastical that you'll do more than stare mouth agape, you'll relate."

Radiohead Continues Work on New Record
The Money Shot: "Jonny's stepping over guitar leads and pedals and laptop as we demo yet another new tune added to the blackboard called 'Rubbernecks'. At the moment its a demo. When is a demo not a demo? When its in time. Whats in time?"

Decemberists, Shins, Sleater-Kinney Talk Portland Scene
The Money Shot: "The reason Portland is so special is people aren't making music for the sake of getting mainstream attention. They are making music because they think art is an important part of our culture," says (Sleater-Kinney's) Brownstein.

Green Day Makes Vid for Epic "Jesus"
The Money Shot: "It's the new 'Thriller,' " singer Billie Joe Armstrong said jokingly — kind of.

Sufjan Stevens is Roadtrippin'
The Money Shot: "I think the road trip is the quintessential American vacation. The automobile is the centre of gravity for Americans. We do a lot of flying and going overseas more, but there's still so much driving. I come from a working class family and we didn't have the money to go overseas or even out of the state, necessarily. Our road trip every year was to Wawa, [Ontario] in Canada or we would drive from upstate to Detroit or to Windsor, [Ontario], where we had family. We just loved getting in the car and seeing things at 65 miles per hour. I think it's an important experience as an American."

Flaming Lips Wrap Up Movie
The Money Shot: "I'm thinking of taking it to theaters and having it be an experience where we bring in giant sound systems, smoke machines, Christmas lights, s*** falls on you from the ceiling and you can smoke pot and do whatever you want."

And just because I wanted to write this headline...

Britney Removes Her Bra
The Money Shot: "This bra was worn by me during promotion of my HBO special, however it is not the one I wore on stage during the 'Baby One More Time' performance. I feel the correct thing to do is remove this item from the auction because I don't want any of you to feel misled."

Cheap Thrills 10.13.05

The Money Shot 10.12.05

Fresh off the presses...

Flaming Lips Return To Rock on New CD
The Money Shot: "You can't tell if [the members of Sabbath] are farmers, wizards, hippies or members of a cult," Coyne says. "It's mysterious territory."

Diff'rent Strokes On the Way
The Money Shot: NYC's The Strokes have confirmed that their new album, First Impressions of Earth, will be released January 3 of next year on RCA.

B&S meets QOTSA
The Money Shot: Former Belle & Sebastian singer Isobel Campbell has signed a solo record deal - and the first new album she will release is a collaboration with Queens of the Stone Age singer Mark Lanegan.

New P*rnographers Invade Toronto
The Money Shot: "I watched a movie before the show. Not very rock ‘n’ roll," Case admitted. "I wasn’t doing cocaine and getting blow jobs."

And in other music news...

Clear Channel Fires Two Programmers Over Payola Allegations
The Money Shot: "If you engage in pay-for-play, you cannot work for Clear Channel," said John Hogan, CEO of Clear Channel Radio. (Note: Evidently Clear Channel doesn't mind if they play shitty music as long as they don't get bribed to do it. That explains a lot...)
