The Money Shot (Halloween Edition) - Scary Songs, Bad Dreams, Werewolves & Flaming (Lips) Skeltons...

The latest "spooky" headlines...

Halloween Fun : The S-s-scariest Songs ever? (NME)
MS: Oh great undead, Halloween is upon us and in between fighting off the ghosts in the photocopier and flicking spiders off the teabags, we've been pondering the scariest songs ever. We’ve scrapped the cobwebs off our keyboard and come up with this lot…

Dave Grohl: "I Still Dream About Kurt Cobain (NME)
MS: "It always feels totally real, probably because I'm a very vivid dreamer. But, in my dreams, Kurt's usually been hiding - we'll get together and I'll end up asking him, 'God, where have you been?'"

Our Top 13 Halloween hits (Canoe)
MS: 8) Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon

Flaming Lips host first annual 'March Of 1,000 Flaming Skeletons' Halloween parade (Yahoo! News)
MS: "A symbolic procession glorifying the beauty of death and the boundless flame of love and life," the Flaming Lips' Halloween march took place on Saturday, October 27, with approximately 1,000 fans (the exact number that the Fire Marshall actually permitted is still up for debate) dressed in matching skeleton bodysuits and carrying lit torches through the streets of Oklahoma City. Fans paid a $25 fee to join the parade, but were allowed to keep their skeleton costumes, their "beautiful, one-of-a-kind, weird-ass" commemorative T-shirts, and their memories of this unique event forever.

The Money Shot: Kate Moss, Margot Signs w/ Sony, Bruce's Broad Appeal and How Apple Ruined The Music Biz...

The latest headlines...

NBC chief says Apple 'destroyed' music pricing (Apple Insider)
MS: The NBC chief also revealed that in addition to more pricing flexibility, his firm was also seeking a cut of Apple hardware sales -- such as the iPod and iPhone -- which were capable of viewing content downloaded from the iTunes Store.

"Apple sold millions of dollars worth of hardware off the back of our content and made a lot of money," he said. "They did not want to share in what they were making off the hardware or allow us to adjust pricing."

Kate Moss Gives Up Babyshambles Songwriting Royalties (NME)
MS: "The music is Pete's thing," the pal continues. "There is still a huge place in her heart for him and she is happy to see him doing better. Besides, he needs the money more than her."

Springsteen fans talking about their g-g-generation (L.A. Times)
MS: It's no surprise that people bring their kids to see Bruce -- the lyrical content is high-minded, and you can see a bit of generational pride on parents' faces as their sons and daughters stare in marvel at the sweep and stamina of what is arguably the best rock band in the world. But there is still something amusing in watching different generations digest the event. For young people, that wasn't Miami Steve Van Zandt -- it's Silvio from "The Sopranos." Max Weinberg? You mean the guy from the Conan O'Brien show?

Margot signs to Epic (Indy.com)
MS: The eight members of Margot & the Nuclear So and So's have recorded about 20 songs during sessions for "Animal!," according to Fry, who said 10 to 15 tunes may be added in January or February. "We'll narrow it from there," Fry said.

The Money Shot (Punk Geezer Edition): Joe Strummer, Joe Jackson, The Sonics, Ramones & Sex Pistols

The latest headlines...

Punk at 30 - a Retrospective on the Filth, the Fury and Fender (Modern Guitar Magazine)
MS: “Who would’ve thought 30 years ago that punk artists like the Ramones, the Sex Pistols and the Clash would be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame?” said Justin Norvell, Fender’s senior marketing manager for electric guitars. “The same music that was vilified and dismissed at the time is now celebrated and honored by the masses. It highlights the fact that sometimes an important cultural movement can happen without anybody knowing it, until it’s too late to deny anymore.”

No Future? Not Exactly. (Village Voice)
MS: A musician in a militantly artless movement, a star who was supposed to disdain celebrity, Joe Strummer didn't so much embody punk as transcend it. Sure, the Sex Pistols were the bomb throwers—in The Future Is Unwritten, their arrival on-screen is greeted with an explosion. But in Strummer, punk got an ambitious (and unironic) generalissimo with the stage presence, the songwriting skill, and the rhetorical firepower to take the revolt over the barricades. And in the quantum leap from the self-titled Clash album to London Calling, punk got exactly what it wasn't supposed to have: a future.

Garage Rock Legends The Sonics Storm Back (Rolling Stone)
MS: "If you come to these shows expecting top musicianship, you're in the wrong place," Parypa warns. "But if we can blow your face off, that will be cool."

New Joe Jackson Album Due In January (Billboard)
MS: Joe Jackson's first album in five years, "Rain," will arrive Jan. 29 via Rykodisc. The project features two of the three other original members of Jackson's longtime band, bassist Graham Maby and drummer Dave Houghton.

The Money Shot: Gruesome Band Names, Inside PJ Harvey's Head, Decemberists Rock For Darfur & Goldfrapp Gets Sensual

PJ Harvey emerges from the musical laboratory (L.A. Times)
MS: "It's storytelling through song," she said, mentioning that she wrote 50 or 60 tunes before whittling "White Chalk" down to 11 that stood both on their own and as one. "My life's work is the study of that. When I'm not physically writing songs, all I do really is read about song craft, gather as much information as I can. I look at meter and stanza, I go back to all the poetic forms and shapes."

Fall Out Boy, Maroon 5, Decemberists Sign On For MySpace's Rock For Darfur Series (MTV)
MS: Some of the proceeds from the second annual series of shows will go to Oxfam International and the Save Darfur Coalition to help combat the humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan as a result of the ongoing devastating civil war. The shows are being held on four continents, giving more fans the opportunity to support the cause. Last year's 22 Rock for Darfur concerts raised $50,000 for relief efforts, according to a MySpace spokesperson. Oxfam will use the funds to help provide those in Chad and the Darfur region with basic supplies such as clean water, shelter, blankets, soap and disease-prevention programs.

Rock List: The Twenty Most Gruesome Band Names (Rolling Stone)
MS: 20. Hootie & the Blowfish

Goldfrapp Reveal New LP Details (Pitchfork)
MS: "A sensual counterpoint to the glitterball glamour of [previous LP] Supernature, Seventh Tree is gilded in the butterfly colours of an English surrealism shared from Lear to Lennon. It shimmers and shines with the warmth of a hazy summer, an electric whirlpool over which Alison's glistening voice soars."

The Money Shot: New B-52's is "hot pink"!, Paste Gives Itself Away, Big Media's Clueless & Elvis Kicks Cobain's Ass

The latest headlines...

Paste invites readers to choose own subscription price (uh... Paste)
MS: “We were curious to know what our customers thought we were worth. And what better way to find out, than to let them tell us?” explained Paste President/Publisher Tim Regan-Porter. “While it’s certainly a bit unconventional, we also see it as a chance to get our product in the hands of people who could become lifelong fans. It’s been our experience that once people become familiar with Paste, they turn into loyal readers.”

Diller: Big Media Late to Web Party (Ad Week)
MS: Former entertainment mogul Barry Diller said Wednesday that when it comes to the disruptive power of the Internet, incumbent media companies still "don't get it," with the possible exception of News Corp.

The B-52's To Release First Studio Album In 16 Years (Plug In Music)
MS: "It's loud, sexy rock and roll for your pleasure zones, with the beat pumped up to hot pink," Strickland said in a statement.

Top-Earning Dead Celebrities (Forbes)
MS: Meanwhile, the brightest star of 2006 doesn't even appear on this year's list. Kurt Cobain, former frontman of grunge band Nirvana, debuted on the list in first place last year after his widow, Courtney Love, sold part of his song catalog for a reported $50 million. But while the deal opened the door for future ad dollars, Cobain's 2007 earnings weren't enough for him to stay on the list.

The Money Shot: Chinese Pop Sucks, QOTSA Disses iPhones, and The Who (& Smashing Pumpkins) Sell Out (Again!)

The latest headlines...

The Sound, Not of Music, but of Control (NY Times)
MS: “What prevails here is worse than garbage,” he said. “Because China emphasizes stability and harmony, the greatest utility of these pop songs is that they aren’t dangerous to the system. If people could hear underground music, it would make them feel the problems in their lives and want to change things.”

Who’s Bucks: The Who Launch For-Fee Subscription Site (Harp)
MS: Now, if you’re like most folks, you might be saying to yourself, “Hmm… fifty bucks is a lot to blow just to be able to access a band website… that doesn’t sound like much of a bargain.” If you look closely at the subscription offer, not only is it making you pay for content you previously might have gotten for free (access to Townsend’s blogs, for example, or fan message boards), it’s also making a heavy pitch for you to buy merch (you get a 25% discount if you’re a subscriber; you get advance ticket info—big whoop).

Guest List by Josh Homme (Pitchfork)
MS: Best Purchase of the Past Year - Shit, I don't know. I guess the best thing I didn't buy is an iPhone. My mother's got one, but I don't want my computer to be in my phone, too. What if it gets a virus or some shit? It's cool, I don't need an iPhone, I'm good. It's sort of like neon lights underneath your car-- until everyone has to, I'm not doing it.

Pumpkins Prep Another Best Buy-Only Zeitgeist (Pitchfork)
MS: Why, when you already have the regular edition, the Target edition, the iTunes edition, and the original Best Buy edition, might you actually consider possibly wanting this artifact too? Well, it has a few bonus tracks-- one from the first Best Buy Zeitgeist ("Death From Above"), one from the iTunes Zeitgeist ("Stellar"), and one that appears nowhere else ("Ma Belle"). It also comes with a DVD sporting the full-length documentary Inside the Zeitgeist. And, um, somebody put the cover art in Photoshop and desaturated it. (They're calling this a "metallic silver color scheme"; it's a "scheme" all right.)

The Money Shot: New Bands Selling Out, Arcade Fire, Johnny Cash and Vinyl's Revenge on CDs

The latest headlines...

Big Interview: Arcade Fire's Jeremy Gara (This Is Nottingham)
MS: "We are so not a party band. People often want us to do an after-show party. Which we don't do. They're like 'I promise this one will be perfect, really quiet, there's a pool, it'll be super chilled.' We show up and there's a whole bunch of marketing executives, there's a pool that fits four people... and we think 'let's never do this again'".

If It’s Retail, Is It Still Rock? (NY Times)
MS: “New artists coming up really understand business. They’re inquisitive, they read things, and they ask questions,” says David H. Chidekel, a principal at the law firm Fish & Richardson in New York. “Back in the hairband days, the bands didn’t really care. They just wanted to get a record deal, get on the road and get going. Now, these kids are looking at everything. They read voraciously, they’re all over the Internet, and they don’t get fooled very easily.”

Johnny Cash Beats Eminem To Best Biopic (Gigwise)
MS: The Johnny Cash film, ‘Walk The Line,’ has been voted the best music biopic of all time. ‘Walk The Line’ held off competition from Eminem’s, ‘8 Mile,’ which came in at number two in the poll ahead of ‘Amadeus’ – which recalls the life of Mozart.

Vinyl May Be Final Nail in CD's Coffin (Wired)
MS: "For many of us, and certainly for many of our artists, the vinyl is the true version of the release," said Matador's Patrick Amory. "The size and presence of the artwork, the division into sides, the better sound quality, above all the involvement and work the listener has to put in, all make it the format of choice for people who really care about music."

The Money Shot: Prince "Goes Crazy" Over YouTube, Apple v TV, Ringles and Arcade Fire Bites The Hand That Feeds...

The latest headlines...

The Home Video Prince Doesn't Want You to See (ABC News)
MS: Twenty eight people, mostly friends and family, had viewed the YouTube video by June, when mom Stephanie Lenz said she received an e-mail from YouTube informing her that her video had been removed from the site at the request of Universal Music Publishing Group, the recording industry's largest label, and warning her that future copyright infringements on her part could force the Web site to cancel her account.

Brick-and-mortar stores eye new music formats (Reuters)
MS: In the latest attempts, iTunes digital download album cards highlighting specific titles are getting high marks in the early part of the rollout. Meanwhile, merchants await the introduction of the "ringle" -- which aims to revive the CD single in the physical world and allow brick-and-mortar merchants to participate in the ringtone phenomenon.

Arcade Fire discuss the bitter taste of success (Guardian)
MS: "I don't like the process of having to promote an album and talk about it," he says, flatly, "and I learnt pretty early on that the artist always seems like the asshole in the situation, no matter what you do. Even if, like, someone was poking you in the face and you went 'fucking stop that!', when the article comes out, it'll be like that happened in slow motion." He mimes giving someone the finger in slow motion, then sighs. "You can't win "

Apple in a Fight for Rights to TV Shows (Washington Post)
MS: "I don't see video as the driving force behind iPod sales," Adam C. Engst, publisher of Apple news Web site Tidbits.com, wrote in an e-mail. "Music is why people buy iPods, and that won't be changing any time soon -- you can't watch TV while jogging or driving."

The Money Shot: Halloween Mixes, Low CD Sales, Grammy Lobbying and Free Internet Radio...

Latest headlines...

Free up that radio dial (Seattle Times)
MS: The attack is multifaceted. Internet radio is in danger because of a proposed new royalty scheme that would wipe out the budgets of many Internet stations. The elimination of Internet radio would allow for the big record labels and corporate radio to continue their cozy relationship without any competition.

Halloween has never sounded so good! (Columbus Ledger-Enquirer)
MS: Another relic of the past is the good, old-fashioned mix disc. It's a casualty of the iPod and its 26 days, 13 hours and 17 minutes of non-stop music. In the retro spirit, here's a collection of songs to make your skin crawl appropriately this Halloween. Grab what you can of these 15 tracks -- from iTunes, eMusic or wherever you get your songs. It's 67 minutes, so it'll fit on a CD (Remember CDs?).

Low tide in October for album sales (Reuters)
MS: Since May 1991, when the big chart switched to Nielsen SoundScan data, there have been 16 weeks when sales for the No. 1 slot fell below 100,000, with seven of those occurring this year. It just seems more jarring to see a number that light during the last four months of the year, when high-profile artists seek to be prime attractions during holiday shopping's traffic.

Grammy voters: Now hear these! (L.A. Times)
MS: It's a gloriously tough year for Grammy voters who love indie rock. The White Stripes, Arcade Fire, the Shins and Spoon all released killer albums, as did indie-friendly semi-rockers Amy Winehouse and LCD Soundsystem. With so much to choose from, I'm pretty sure that the eighth album by dance-rock nonconformist Kevin Barnes and his Athens, Ga.-based troupe will get overlooked.

The Money Shot: Johnny Rotten, Video Games Sell Music (DUH!), Buzz Bands and Americana

The latest headlines...

Johnny Rotten sounds off on the Sex Pistols return (OC Register)
MS: Everybody's trying to claim the credit for inventing punk. It is utterly ridiculous, utterly insane. And that Ramones nonsense going on and on and on – how on Earth are the Ramones anything at all like the Sex Pistols? We came from a culture facing some serious challenges when we were young. We were the complete bottom line – the poorest of the poor. We come from squalor and fought our way up tooth and claw. Mommy and Daddy didn't buy us no guitars.

Bands find video games a ticket to fame (Reuters)
MS: "Every gamer wants the feeling that they've personally discovered a song that's going to be big ... and then, a month later, they hear it on the radio," Schnur said. "They will always associate that music with their gaming experience. Gamers want to feel they're in the know before anyone else. Around the world, this is what the cool kids and trendsetters crave, and that's why they are loyal to us," he said.

Americana Dream (Nashville Scene)
MS: “From my perspective at the independent record store, one of the absolutely hottest trends going in indie music is singer-songwriters,” he says. “I mean look at Sufjan Stevens and Iron and Wine, and even outsiders like Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom. There’s certainly nothing remotely twangy about those people. I think if you sat somebody down and put the blindfold on them and played them an Iron and Wine record and asked them to name the genre, they’d be just as likely to say Americana as anything else.”

Could The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion Be Number One Today? (MTV)
MS: The problem seems to be that we're propping up a whole host of bands too early, giving them their moment before they're even remotely ready for it. In my opinion, acts like the Arcade Fire and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah scuffled with album #2 because they were given too much, too soon.

MJTV: Sly & the Family Stone - If You Want Me To Stay/Sing A Simple Song/Higher (live)

The Money Shot: Downloading Is Like Speeding, Albini v Louris, Glastonbury & the Future of Radio...

The latest headlines...

Mac McCaughan Discusses "Future of Radio" in Senate (Pitchfork)
MS: "Artists who thrive outside of the commercial realm depend on and deserve open access to public platforms such as the airwaves and the internet. Likewise, communities and citizens should have access to localized and diverse media. This is not just a means of doing business, but also an important facet of American life that needs to be nurtured and protected."

OiNK Raid Raises The Question: What Risks Are You Really Taking When Downloading Music? (MTV)
MS: "It's become a little like speeding," he posited. "The people who get caught in speed traps are usually pretty innocent — a soccer mom who's late to pick up her kid, or someone who's late for work. The habitual speeder, who drives 100 miles an hour all the time, is less likely to get the ticket because he's taken steps to reduce his risk. [Thus], it's less likely that the RIAA is going to get a really dedicated, eye-patch wearing, 'aargh'-sputtering pirate; it's more likely that they're going to get who doesn't know how to reduce personal risk and exposure."

The Sadies: Sweethearts of the Studio (Harp)
MS: Good explains that Albini saw his job as capturing the band’s live sound, not shaping it, “If you ask him what he thinks of your songs, he’ll respond, “It’s your record.” he says. Louris, by contrast, joined in singing, performing and songwriting. “Ultimately Gary was great at just doing exactly what Steve does, which is get the best out of us.”

Glastonbury gigs seek new stars (BBC)
MS: "The aim is to collect as many new bands as possible throughout the year and build up a strong roster of new acts," she said. "We've had some brilliant debut sets throughout the years, where bands start at Glastonbury on a very small stage and end up playing the Pyramid in a few years."

The Money Shot: Flaming Lips Alley, OiNK=Google?, Free Reznor Project & Comcast F's W/BitTorrent

The latest headlines...

Oink Founder: We're Just Like Google (Telegraph)
MS: “I haven’t done anything wrong. I don’t believe my website breaks the law. They don’t understand how it works. The website is very different from how the police are making it out to be. There is no music sold on the site - I am doing nothing wrong. When I set up the site I didn’t think I was doing anything illegal and I still don’t. There are 180,000 users and there has been an outcry about what has happened to me. People who download music also buy CDs as well. A lot of people download music on the internet to get a taste of it and then later buy the CD. But I don’t sell music to people, I just direct them to it. If somebody wants to illegally download music they are going to do it whether my site is there or not."

Saul Williams Gives Away Reznor-Produced LP (Pitchfork)
MS: "There are obvious similarities in how Radiohead just released their new record and the way we've chosen to. After thinking about this way too much, I feel we've improved upon their idea in a few profound ways that benefit the consumer."

Congressman to Comcast: Stop interfering with BitTorrent (CNET)
MS: "Comcast has made a major mistake in attempting to hinder peer-to-peer file sharing as an aspect of its network management," Boucher said. "The inability of customers to (share files) significantly diminishes their ability to utilize the Internet for one of its most important applications, which is user-to-user content." He also noted that "file sharing is already being used for a wide variety of perfectly lawful and appropriate applications."

The Flaming Lips alley dedicated in Oklahoma City (KOKH Fox 25)
MS: With a giant, three-dimensional globe as a backdrop and flanked by fans outfitted in Santa suits and green alien masks, The Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne thanked city leaders for the honor.

The Money Shot: 'OK Computer', Internet Radio Equality, UK Anti-File-sharing laws, Tarantino & Matt Pond PA

More headlines...

Anti file-sharing laws considered (BBC News)
MS: "You will dismantle the fundamentals of the democratic state, which is to be free in your person, your mind and your conversation from scrutiny and surveillance. So this is a really misbegotten idea,"

Web Radio Seeks Resolution (Washington Post)
MS: "We are in a strange situation of offering services that compete directly with terrestrial and satellite radio but have a different rate structure," said Tim Westergren, chief strategy officer and founder of Pandora. "There needs to be parity if we are going to survive."

Was 'OK Computer' inspired by Thom Yorke's coursework nightmare? (NME)
MS: "I remember somebody wiped his final degree show by accident just before it was due in," Donwood told Radio 4's 'Today' programme. "He had to do it all again in two weeks which he wasn't pleased about."

Matt Pond PA: No Cavities (Harp)
MS: “There’s too much disconnection in indie rock today; there’s too many obtuse words,” Pond says. “[Cocker and Albarn] use imagery too, but there’s always a spirit and a soul within it. That’s what we’re trying to do. When I have something to say, I’ll say it. I don’t want to be guarded.”

American splendor: The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn rekindles the fires of youthful indiscretion (Detroit Metro Times)
MS: "Everybody thinks that a songwriter is baring his soul," he counters. "But no one says to Quentin Tarantino, 'You must do tons of karate and just shoot people all the time.' These songs are based on my life, but it's certainly not my life."

The Money Shot: Arctic Monkeys, REM's Drummer, Chinese Lyrics and Managers Replace Labels?

Current headlines...

Leaving Record Labels Behind (Business Week)
MS: And often the closest relationship—business, and sometimes personal—that a working band has is with its manager. He or she generally serves as point person to a band's label, and to other arenas in which a band does business, such as tour booking and T-shirt sales. Transitioning to label-like functions is "something managers have been talking about for a long time," says Brian Long of Yes Know Management, which reps disco punks VHS OR BETA. Long, who founded electronic music label Astralwerks, calls such a move "the natural evolution of what a manager already does." In these dispirited times, label executives concede that the guy closest to the band could have the upper hand. "It's a logical place to go," says one.

Arctic Monkeys: 'People thought Oasis supported us!' (NME)
MS : "When we were in America recently there were loads of rumours that they had supported us in Manchester," he said. "Everyone asked us, 'it must have been ace having Oasis support you'".

China song-writers decry "unhealthy" pop tunes (Reuters)
MS: Delegates singled out online hits, including "Na Yi Ye" -- "That One Night" -- by Xie Jun, a song about a couple who get drunk and spend the night together. "That one night you didn't refuse me!/That one night I hurt you/That one night you were all tears," are the raciest lyrics.

A band's only as good as its drummer (Guardian UK)
MS: Indisputably, REM have shown fleeting moments of brilliance (E-Bow the Letter, At my Most Beautiful, She Just Wants to Be) since Berry skipped off to milk cows in Georgia. But, given the patchiness of their recent albums, you can't help thinking they'd have been better off following the example of Led Zeppelin, who sensibly realised there was no point carrying on after Bonzo snuffed it in 1980.

The Money Shot: Iggy, U2Charist, Radiohead, OiNK, Lekman, Hold Steady, MIA & Rock Fantasy Camp...

Today's headlines...

BBC Criticized for Iggy Pop's Racist Remark (NME)
MS: During a live BBC2 interview, Pop recounted an anecdote about visiting "Paki shops" in Camden. The BBC issued an on-air apology the following day but broadcasting watchdog Ofcom received two complaints from viewers about the incident. Ofcom ruled that the BBC "failed in its responsibility to ensure the offence caused was justified by the context".

Rock’s Balkanized Route to the Indies (NY Times)
MS: On any given night in an American rock club you can hear bands like Gogol Bordello, Man Man, Beirut and Balkan Beat Box playing odd-metered songs drawing on the rhythms of Eastern European Gypsy music. You might encounter Antibalas or Vampire Weekend riffing on African sounds, Dengue Fever making psychedelic Cambodian pop or a D.J. like Diplo spinning Brazilian funk. On the recent “Kala,” a contender for the year’s most exciting pop album, the British-Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A., who works from Brooklyn, draws on Indian, African and West Indian sounds. The folk-rocker Devendra Banhart creates fusions with Mexican and Brazilian musicians on his recent CD, “Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon.” And the veteran musical adventurer Bjork toured this year with a West African percussion troupe and Chinese pipa virtuoso.

Radiohead Said to Shun Major Labels in Next Deal (NY Times)
MS: Radiohead, the British rock band that is regarded as the pre-eminent free agent in the global music business, is close to signing a series of deals to release its next album independently and leave the major record companies behind.

CBGB’s Vacant Shell To House Designer Suits And Other Things We Can’t Afford (Rolling Stone)
MS: If cancer hadn’t recently claimed CBGB founder Hilly Kristal, this news might have. The boutique is just the latest addition to hit the formerly dilapidated Bowery strip: Whole Foods and Starbucks were recently constructed as the street continues to morph from punky to yuppie.

Raids Target Music Piracy Site (Reuters)
MS: "OiNK was central to the illegal distribution of pre-release music online," said Jeremy Banks, head of the anti-piracy unit at the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which helped in the investigation.

"This was not a case of friends sharing music for pleasure. This was a worldwide network that got hold of music they did not own the rights to and posted it online."

The Hold Steady Ready New Album (NME)
MS: "It sounds like the rest of our stuff. It's hard for me to tell what's different. I haven't finished lyrics at all. Writing a record to me is like doing a crossword puzzle, there's that last one on the bottom and once you get that one the rest of them it gets really easy. I don't have that one yet, but I have a lot of the other ones"

Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp Going On Tour (Billboard)
MS: Fishof will recruit 12 as-yet-unnamed rock star counselors who will each oversee one band in each city. Campers will arrive at 8 a.m., split into 12 different bands, and rehearse all day long. And "by 6 p.m., they're opening for a major rock act, which has yet to be named," Fishof says. "Each band does one song in front of a major act."

U2 lyrics turn congregations into crowds (Yale Daily)
MS: A U2charist is an Episcopalian worship service that uses U2 songs to instill a message of compassion and hope within a traditional liturgy. The service aims to encourage attendees to work toward the Millennium Development Goals set by the United Nations, which promote worldwide development. U2’s lead singer Bono co-founded the ONE Campaign, which embraces the MDGs in its efforts to eliminate poverty,

The Musical Genius of Jens Lekman (Slate)
MS: Lekman's reception in the States has been limited by a couple of minor artistic transgressions. First, he is, yes, it's true, prone to the sort of twee self-regard that converted Wes Anderson, midcareer, from a promising filmmaker into an antique tea table. Second, his influences and affinities are instantly obvious: Stephin Merritt's drone, Morrissey's bite, Belle and Sebastian's atmospherics, with some of Jonathan Richman's wild pitch and yaw. But all this is superficial in the face of one overwhelming truth: Lekman is a fully realized pop genius, and each of his full-length records is its own masterpiece.

The Money Shot: Feist, Banhart, Smiths' Reunion, Kid Rock, Death Cab, Bruce, Rock Sellouts...

Today's headlines...

U.S. Customs Clears Chris Walla's Hard Drive (Pitchfork)
MS: "We followed standard operating procedure...and when you start talking about...Guantánamo Bay [as Walla did in his blog post], you get my ire up. I go on Google News, and I see 125 different news stories out there with the headline 'Homeland Security Seizes Musician's Music', and it strikes me as unfair. And I will be spending the rest of the day trying to contact those people-- The Associated Press, the record company [Barsuk], and Mr. Walla-- to ask them if they can set the record straight."

How to Calculate Musical Sellouts (Washington Post)
MS: There is no longer even a debate, let alone a stigma. "If you did an advert, you were a sellout," notes Billboard Executive Editor Tamara Conniff. "The Rolling Stones broke that when they allowed the use of 'Start Me Up' for the Windows campaign. Though there was an initial backlash, it suddenly made it okay for bands of integrity to do commercials. Now, it's almost as if as an artist you don't have a corporate partner [or] commercial, you've not really arrived."

What Springsteen Can Teach CEOs (US News)
MS: There's been a lot of hype about Springsteen reuniting with his famed E Street Band for the first tour since 2003, but come on—Springsteen, the man, is the draw, pure and simple. Still, this is one maestro who spreads the glory across the stage. Not once during the show does a spotlight shine on Springsteen alone. He continually calls out "Steve," "Clarence," and the other band members. And when they bow at the end, they bow together. It's a pretty neat marketing trick to create a cult of personality around somebody known for humility. Quick—can anyone name a CEO able to pull that off?

A Place to Bury Strangers Shut Down by Cops, Tour (Pitchfork)
MS: "Six policemen stormed A Place to Bury Strangers' set at Loisaida after just two songs following noise complaints from local tenants. The promoter, Vacancy Records' Louise Fenton, was escorted by the officers toward the back of the building to have a word." [See photo above]

Fenton somehow convinced the cops to allow the band one more song, so APTBS did "Ocean", the epic closing track from their self-titled album. "Police officers then reported back to their dispatch to say they were in the process of shutting the event down, but that they were letting the band finish their song first, because, (directly quoted from the officer): 'This band is sick.'"

Johnny Marr: 'The Smiths might reunite.' (NME)
MS: He added: "It's no biggy. Maybe we will in 10 or 15 years time when we all need to for whatever reasons, but right now Morrissey is doing his thing and I'm doing mine, so that's the answer really."

Kid Rock Arrested For Assault After Waffle House Scuffle (MTV)
MS: "He and five members of his entourage were involved in a fight with a male customer inside the Waffle House," DeKalb County Police Department spokeswoman Mekka Parish told AP. "It escalated to a physical altercation between Kid Rock and that male customer, and moved outside to the parking lot."

Interview: Devendra Banhart (Pitchfork)
MS: I didn't start out playing with a booking agent, and a label, and a band. I started off playing through calling people on payphones, then waiting by the payphone to see if I could platy. Having my guitar, playing half of the set aquarelle and not getting paid. I've been charged to play before. Oh, we didn't make enough from the liquor. Do you have 40 bucks, man? I've been in that position, when nobody knows anything. I still managed to sell a couple of demos, but it isn't like I've always had all of these things.

Canadian singer's career goes into fast-forward after iPod ad (USA Today)
MS: "It was a case of having that video I made with my friends be seen instead of rolling the dice in the hopes that someday, someone might play it on one of those channels that plays five videos and a lot of reality television shows." The single-camera production number features four dozen dancers. "It was like being in kindergarten, but with all the knowledge of what you've grown up to decide you wanted to do with your life," Feist, 31, says. "We were just running around a gymnasium, making shapes together."

Canadian All-time Top 100 Includes Arcade Fire, Neil, Sloan...

Canadian journalist Bob Mersereau decided to write a book on the top 100 Canadian records of all time. If you're like me, you might be asking why?

"There really isn’t a good reference for Canadian albums. You look at the Rolling Stone book, and there’s Neil, Joni, Leonard (Cohen), the Band and Alanis, and that’s it. And there’s so many more that only we get, as Canadians. Outside of Canada, Gordon Lightfoot gets trashed as this MOR singer, and they don’t get why we’d want to hear someone sing about pussy willows, cattails, soft winds and roses."
Here's the top 20...

1. Harvest, Neil Young (Reprise, 1972)
2. Blue, Joni Mitchell (Reprise, 1970)
3. After the Gold Rush, Neil Young (Reprise, 1970)
4. Music From Big Pink, The Band (Capitol, 1968)
5. Fully Completely, The Tragically Hip (MCA, 1992)
6. Jagged Little Pill, Alanis Morisette (Maverick, 1995)
7. The Band, The Band (Capitol, 1969)
8. Funeral, Arcade Fire (Merge, 2004)
9. Moving Pictures, Rush (Anthem, 1981)
10. American Woman, The Guess Who (RCA, 1970)
11. Songs of Leonard Cohen, Leonard Cohen (Columbia, 1967)
12. Reckless, Bryan Adams (A&M, 1984)
13. Five Days in July, Blue Rodeo (Warner, 1993)
14. Twice Removed, Sloan (Geffen, 1994)
15. Up To Here, The Tragically Hip (MCA, 1989)
16. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Neil Young with Crazy Horse (Reprise, 1969)
17. 2112, Rush (Mercury 1976)
18. Court and Spark, Joni Mitchell (Asylum, 1974)
19. Whale Music, Rheostatics (Sire, 1992)
20. Acadie, Daniel Lanois (Opal, 1989)

I'll sign off on Neil Young and Arcade Fire, but this may be the only time that Rush ever makes its way onto this blog in a positive way. For the record, I'm surprised there's no Cowboy Junkies...
