The Money Shot: The Old 97's Fight Back, R.E.M. Gets Focused and A Jayhawks Post-Mortem...

    More headlines...

    Solo shot (The Phoenix)
MS: The band’s last studio disc, Rainy Day Music, came out in 2003. “We were running a bit on fumes,” he admits. “Not in terms of popularity or anything, but in terms of inspiration. It seems like there’s a certain lifespan for a band, and ours was longer than most.” What hadn’t run its course was Louris’s desire to keep making music. “So I just decided to use my own name.”

Old 97's Ready 'Epic' New Album (Billboard)
MS: "I'd say looking back at the last record, there's only two songs that would have made this record. The quality just wasn't there," Miller says. "On 'Drag It Up,' I let the other members run the show; I took a total step back. [1999's] 'Fight Songs' was called that because we fought about everything, and I was pushing everyone. The last one, I didn't push. I just let it happen and then they could feel what it's like to carry the load. Afterward, they were more willing to let me in. I'm the youngest member of the band, so there has always been this push back."

    Interview: R.E.M. (Pitchfork)
MS: We went to the most obvious place, which was to do really fast songs that were really short. Peter did what he does, I did what I do, and Mike did what he does, so we kind of trimmed the fat, if you will, and got down to the very basics that make each of us musicians. And so what you're left with is this type of material performed with Peter doing... a couple of times in the past ten years, I've said to him, I want that thing again. Just for the longest time I said, Stop doing that, to Peter. Or, Mike would be like, The vocal is really great as it is, and it's coming from an articulated place conceptually, so I don't think it really needs background vocals. So he wouldn't do background vocals. Or, I would say, Yeah, I think it stands alone. Or whatever. So anyway, we threw our cards on the table and did what comes naturally when we've got a more broken-down palette of colors to work with. And that's what you wind up with. I'm really happy with it.

The Money Shot: Jens Lekman Loves Wikipedia, The Future of Radio and The Sad End of The College Record Store...

    The latest news...

Across the country, college-town record shops are biting the dust (Chicago Sun-Times)
MS: A few years ago on just one block of Chapel Hill’s Franklin Street, the main drag in what’s been called America’s ideal college town, four or five such places catered both to locals and University of North Carolina students.

But with the demise of Schoolkids Records, the last one is gone. Schoolkids had planned to gut it out through March, but couldn’t even make through its final week and shut down Saturday. It’s just the latest victim in an industry hit by rising college-town rents, big-box retailers, high CD prices, and — most importantly — a new generation of college students for whom music has become an entirely online, intangible hobby they often don’t have to pay for.

Indie pop genius Jens Lekman makes it up as he goes along (SFBG.com)
MS: I love Wikipedia! That's so funny. Every time I come into the US and i cross customs or border control, they always check my passport and I have a work permit now for the first time - I never had it before and I always had to sneak in before - and they check me and say. "Oh, you're an artist." There's always a guy behind the guy saying, "Check him on Wikipedia."

That's so funny that the American authorities would use Wikipedia as a trustworthy source! Anyone can change anything. A friend of mine usually goes into my Wikipedia and writes all this bullshit, just changes things. I think the last thing she wrote was that I was the son of a bear trapper.

Name That Tune-In: Who Will Emerge as The Future of Radio?
    (Washington Post)
MS: As in other areas of media, the music industry is finally starting to come around to the difficult truth that we now live in a world in which consumers expect information and entertainment to be free. Efforts to sell music by subscription have mainly failed. (Yahoo recently gave up on its Music Unlimited subscription service and sent its customers to Rhapsody, another struggling music provider.) But traditional radio's offer of free music surrounded by audio advertising is also being rejected by a generation that resents undesirable interruptions.

"They want to be the program director and they insist that the program be free," says Jerry Del Colliano, a professor of music industry at the University of Southern California and a former executive at Top 40 WIBG in Philadelphia. "Young consumers don't have that need that we older folks have to have someone knowledgeable about the music tell them what's new. They have their social network to tell them what's cool."

The Money Shot: Universal Decides To Censor BYOP, Pumpkins Sue Virgin Over Pepsi Promo, & Why Bands Need Health Insurance...

    The latest news...

Rock and Roll May Never Die, but Sometimes It Gets Sick (Wall Street Journal)
MS: “We found that magic combination of people that have been with us for a while, and we want them to stay,” says Stefani Scamardo, who manages the band and also DJs on Sirius satellite radio. “We had an entire band and crew that have no health insurance, and that was troubling.”

Universal Axes Be Your Own Pet Songs Due to Violence (Pitchfork)
MS: "When I found out that the songs were going to get taken off, I was just like, 'Is there anybody I can talk to?' It's like, I don't even really know who these people are. There's no one you can talk to to try to argue your case. Other than that, Universal has been great. But I guess that's just what happens when you decide to have something to do with a major label. They're going to be scared of anything that's not completely cookie cutter."

"I also feel like it's a good thing to have an outlet. Like, maybe I would be a very violent person if I didn't have the chance to sing about what I want to sing about and express things I want and it's definitely helped me from being a destructive person in my life. And I think tons of people relate to that, so it's kind of frustrating that they want to censor me or whatever."

Smashing Pumpkins sue over 'integrity' (CNN Money)
MS: Virgin put out the Smashing Pumpkins' music for more than 17 years, but the only active agreement between the two parties, the lawsuit claimed, is a deal granting Virgin permission to sell digital downloads of the band's songs. The agreement does not give Virgin the right to use the band in promotional campaigns to sell outside products, the lawsuit said.

The band members said they would "never grant such authority to Virgin, or any other entity."

The Money Shot: Radiohead Not The First R'N'R Bodysnatchers, Why Music Is Free and Sex, Drugs & Rockin' With Moby...

    The latest news...

Back on deck, the saint who never was (Fairfax Digital)
MS: Moby says his past admissions of hedonistic behaviour were only the tip of the iceberg, but he kept mostly quiet so as not to unduly offend those fans attracted by his "straight-edge reputation". But he now admits to ending up in therapy for substance abuse. He finally stopped taking drugs when the extent of his memory loss left him fearing he'd end up "the person at parties gibbering and rocking quietly in a corner". The sex parties lost their appeal, too. "Liquor and drugs diminish your inhibitions and you connect with people you wouldn't connect with when you're sober," he muses.

Rising price of fame in the land of the free (Telegraph UK)
MS: "This is a case where the product has become free because of sheer economic gravity, with or without a business model. That force is so powerful that laws, guilt trips, DRM, and every other barrier to piracy the labels can think of have failed. Some artists give away their music online as a way of marketing concerts, merchandise, licensing and other paid fare. But others have accepted that, for them, music is not a money-making business. It's something they do for other reasons, from fun to creative expression."

The Top 10... Weirdest rock 'n' roll deaths (Mirror UK)
MS: 10. After dying of a drug overdose, country rock pioneer Gram Parsons’ body disappeared from the Los Angeles International Airport.

Maintaining his alleged promise, Parsons’ road manager Phil Kaufman and a friend managed to steal the star’s body from the airport and, in a borrowed hearse, drove Parsons' body to Joshua Tree national park in California where he attempted to cremate it.

The pair were arrested several days later but got away with a $700 fine for burning the coffin, as stealing a body was not recognised as a crime in the state.

The Money Shot: Googling Vampire Weekend, No-Hit Wonders, & Rockin' The Chucks...

    More headlines...

I'm with the band (The Guardian)
MS: "Converse have been my staple stage shoe from pretty much the beginning of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs," says Karen O of her unusual decision to put her face and feet to the campaign (YYYs have been known to turn down corporate sponsored tours in the past because it devalued their art). "They have become as much a part of my image as the bright red lips and torn fishnets. I'm happy to endorse a shoe that my feet have known so intimately throughout my rock'n'roll exploits."

The no-hit wonders that music refused to forget (Independent UK)
    MS: The Raincoats

Despite punk's iconoclastic energy, and the short-term success of The Slits and X-Ray Spex, it is hard to dismiss the feeling that sexism remained rife. Many female-dominated acts, ignored at the time, have gone on to be praised as brave pioneers, from Manchester's Ludus to Swiss upstarts LiLiPUT, but it is The Raincoats who made the most impact by mixing sonic eccentricity with put-downs of consumerism and patriarchal society.

After the failure of 1984 album Moving, founder member Ana da Silva turned to dance as a means of expression, while the band's records awaited a more favourable time. That was the early Nineties, when the Riot Grrrl movement opened doors for female musicians and Kurt Cobain walked into Rough Trade to buy a copy of their first album. He was directed to Da Silva's house round the corner. A reformed line-up would have supported Nirvana if Cobain had not committed suicide, but The Raincoats still went on to play some other occasions, among them Robert Wyatt's Meltdown in London and Leeds Ladyfest.

Vampire Weekend doesn't vant to drink your buzz
MS: "You really start to realize that the Internet is a very bizarre place," he says. "You can't worry about every little thing, positive or negative, that's written about you. I'm definitely at the point where I'm not interested in Googling 'Vampire Weekend.' "

He also seems reluctant to accept the group's status as a "blog band" with a rep fueled primarily by online buzz.

"You'll hear about bands on blogs now," he observes, "because that's just a new form of media. Yeah, some bloggers really got behind us, which is awesome. But I think that before, like, 90% of any blogs wrote about us, we had a piece in the New York Times. So does that make us, like, 'a newspaper band'?"

The Money Shot: Elvis Costello Biting The Hand That Feeds (Again), Pumpkins Now A Singles Band & Does Billy Bragg Want To Put A Meter On Internet?

    Today's headlines...

    The Royalty Scam (NY Times)
MS: What’s at stake here is more than just the morality of the market. The huge social networking sites that seek to use music as free content are as much to blame for the malaise currently affecting the industry as the music lover who downloads songs for free. Both the corporations and the kids, it seems, want the use of our music without having to pay for it.

The claim that sites such as MySpace and Bebo are doing us a favor by promoting our work is disingenuous. Radio stations also promote our work, but they pay us a royalty that recognizes our contribution to their business. Why should that not apply to the Internet, too?

New Costello Album: Vinyl, Digital, No CD
    (Billboard)
MS: Elvis Costello's next solo studio album, curiously dubbed "Momofuku," will arrive April 22 via Lost Highway. For the time being, the set will be released only on vinyl, with a digital download code included in the package.

Smashing Pumpkins Entering the Studio to Plot Their Next Move (Spinner)
MS: "I think what we'll do is start releasing songs," Chamberlin continues. "The record or CD format places too many limitations on your piece of art. People just don't buy records anymore. Anyone under the age of 24 just buys songs. It's just in our best interest to release blocks of songs. And I think what we'll do – not to let the cat out of the bag too much – is to create the framework where we can release a number of songs and maybe create a title. We can gather three or four songs, but it will all flow up to a larger body of work. But to call it record in the traditional sense would be anachronistic."

The Money Shot: I'll Take Some Bland Pop Music With That Decaf Soy Latte, Raconteurs Rush Job & Strokes' Cover Controversy...

    Current headlines...

Raconteurs Album Being Rushed To Market Next Week (Billboard)
MS: The Raconteurs are eschewing the standard months-long wait between finishing an album and releasing it with "Consolers of the Lonely," which will hit retail March 25 via Third Man/Warner Bros. The set wasn't even completed until the first week of March, according to a statement from the band.

"The purpose: to get the album to the fans as soon as possible and as we promised," the Jack White-featuring band says. "We wanted to get this record to fans, the press, radio, etc., all at the EXACT SAME TIME so that no one has an upper hand on anyone else regarding it's availability, reception or perception."

The 50 Most Controversial Album Covers Of All Time! (Gigwise)
MS: 34. The Strokes: ‘Is This It’ – Ranked as one of the greatest album covers of all time, the image of a leather-clad hand pressed into a woman’s behind was banned from the US and had to be replaced with a photo of particle collisions in the Big European Bubble Chamber. The content was controversial too: ‘New York City Cops’ had to be replaced with ‘When It Started’ to avoid causing offence after 9/11.

Does This Latte Have a Funny Mainstream Taste to You? (NY Times)
MS: Starbucks was betting that its eclectic taste played to the upscale atmosphere of its coffee shops, where it enticed customers to pay $4 for their daily caffeine fix. And record companies saw Starbucks at the vanguard of a new class of unconventional sales outlets that could keep the CD alive in an age of digital downloads.

But the ardor for Starbucks has gone the way of yesterday morning’s grounds. Critics in the music industry say the company squandered its cachet by mismanaging the effort to broaden its music mix. The choices that reflect its early taste for the offbeat — like an album from Lizz Wright, a torchy pop singer — are now squeezed in with offerings not unlike those at Wal-Mart, including the latest releases from Alicia Keys and James Blunt. The shift has not been lost on some customers.

    REM frontman discusses sexuality (NME)
MS: "I was totally open with the band and my family and my friends and certainly the people I was sleeping with. I thought it was pretty obvious," Stipe said.

The Money Shot: Tossing Peas With BYOP, Banning Kate Moss and Why SXSW Doesn't Want You To Party...

    The latest news...

Heavy Meddle: Music Festival Limits the Party (WSJ)
MS: Music fans have long been conditioned to cringe at such corporate displays and admire the free-spirited folks who organize music festivals. But at the 22-year-old SXSW, as this event is known, the tables have turned. The festival folks, not Big Business, are looking like the heavies. The reason: Parties like the one Wednesday night aren't sanctioned by SXSW, which has increasingly gone to great lengths to discourage or shut them down. They're calling in complaints to fire marshals and taking party promoters to court.

Kills frontman bans Kate Moss on stage (Music-News.com)
MS: "Alison has told Kate to keep her boundaries and keep away from the microphone. Alison and Jamie have worked for years to make a name for themselves and have only recently had the success she thinks they deserve. She sees Kate as a spanner in the works and, until she came along, Alison always came first with Jamie."

Be Your Own Pet spark mass food fight in London (NME)
MS: Do you want to have to throw away your underwear because it's stained with peas and ketchup? Do you want to wash spaghetti o's out of your hair for a week? No, you don’t. Be thankful this was tame.

The Fight for the Future of Music
    (Business Week)
MS: “Subscription is one that the record companies are trying to chase after because it is a great way to have recurring money,” said one audience member. “But for the consumer, what is the value that they get out of that?”

Von Bondies Turn Free Agents For New Album
    (Billboard)
MS: The Detroit group -- whose 2004 major label debut "Pawn Shoppe Heart," came out on Sire and launched the hit "C'mon C'mon" -- has asked to be released from its deal and gotten approval, so long as it doesn't sign with another major. The Von Bondies have finished a new album, "Love, Hate And Then There's You," financed by founding members Stollsteimer and drummer Don Blum, as well as an EP, "We Are Kamikazes," that the group is distributing on its own.

Indie labels take e-commerce into their own hands (Reuters)
MS: With their digital download sites, a growing number of indie rock labels have begun to answer the prayers of fans who would love to hear long-out-of-print singles on their iPods or other mobile devices.

    SXSW 2008: Day Four (Saturday)

Saturday was a day to see as many acts as I could. The day started with a morning trip to Austin's great record store, Waterloo Records. I grabbed a basket and started filling it up with CDs. As I'm browsing, I look up and see Rolling Stone's David Fricke facing me in the next aisle. The stalker in me was immediately inspired to play "Record Shopping with David Fricke", so I went over to see what he was buying. Strategically positioned one bin to his left, I watched as he browsed The Hellacopters, then smiled as he picked up a special edition copy of the Jam's All Mod Cons. I got bored by the time he hit King Crimson and it was time to move on.

I came up with an idea I'm calling the "3 song rule"... nothing original, but an act has 3 songs to capture my interest enough to make me want to hear more, otherwise, time's a wastin'. All in all, I got to see 20 bands Saturday, so I guess the rule worked. It's too much to blog these acts in detail, so here they are, quick & dirty and in order...

Cathy Davey: Irish singer-songwriter, kinda poppy, maybe a little Regina Spektor-ish (Grade: B-)

Frankel: Indie folky doing acoustic set. Seemed like he might be ok with a full band, but didn't hold my interest. (Grade: C)

The Whigs: Finally, a band with people under 40 that knows how to rock. One of the better bands I saw this trip. (Grade: B+)

Liam Finn: Clever, witty, talented. Another one of those 2-piece bands, but Liam does some pretty cool things with loops on the fly. Son of Neil is worthy of the Finn bloodline. (Grade: B+)

Health: Loud, pulsing, distorted. Kraftwerk meets Speed Metal. Lots of energy. Not bad, but probably just not my thing. (Grade: C-)

Paul Kelly: Kelly's been called Australia's Elvis Costello. I couldn't miss this relatively rare chance to see him and I wasn't disappointed. (Grade: A)

Nicole Atkins: Columbia's pushing her debut hard, so you may be hearing more of her on the radio. Not the best female act this trip, but she can sing. A bit more pop than I might like. (Grade: B-)

Port O'Brien: Oakland indie folk band really made me smile with their energy, especially on "I Woke Up Today". Seeing about 10 audience members up on stage banging whatever they could get their hands on while the hoarse band screamed out the lyrics to this stomper was one of the trip's highlights. (Grade: B+)

The Dodos: Another 2-piece folk rock band. Not a standout, but not bad. (Grade: C)

Built For The Sea: Dreamy indie pop. A little too earnest and serious for my taste, but it could have just been my mood needed something lighter. (Grade: B-)

Loquat: A bit more dance pop and electronica than I typically listen to but the songs all had a nice groove to them with strong catchy choruses, especially "Sit Sideways". A lot of people would probably dig this. (Grade: B-)

Chuck Prophet: Another solid set from a veteran rocker. This guy's criminally underrated. "Doubter Out Of Jesus" was another of the trip's highlights. (Grade: A-)

Sons & Daughters: The Glasgow band spins out catchy rockers like their Domino labelmates, Arctic Monkeys. Big drums, big guitars. (Grade: B+)

Oppenheimer: The Belfast band opened the evening lineup at Emo's. I sat and watched but didn't hear anything that made me want to get up. (Grade: C)

Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong: Best new band I heard at SXSW. Reminds me of the Kaiser Chiefs, the Hives, Franz Ferdinand. Lead vocalist Joe Lean is a rock star and I expect to see a lot more of these guys. (Grade: A)

The Raveonettes: Don't get me wrong. I love the Raveonettes. Bought their CD earlier in the day. This performance was solid, but their cool energy comes off a tad aloof and boring over the course of a live set. (Grade: B-)

The Donnas: These girls are solid and rockin' pros. Flirtatious and fun. (Grade: B+)

The Slits: Veteran punkers air out their dub reggae fetish. A major disappointment considering I walked away from seeing X again for this. Yawn... (Grade: C-)

Film School: Dreamy pop but with a bit more punch than some of the others working this turf. Atomospheric J+M Chain-influenced landscapes. (Grade: B)

David Garza: Local rocker brings the music to a close with "Discoball World". (Grade: B)

To wrap things up, here's a brief summary of all the 45 acts we saw and their grades:

    A+: X

    SXSW 2008: Day Three (Friday)

The key to surival @ SXSW may just be a hot soaking bath while you read the day's schedule. I'm not a bath guy but well... who knew?

Friday started out with a visit to Flatstock. This event's free to the public and it features original rock posters by over 80 graphic arts from all over the place. This thing is worth the trip by itself for any indie music lover. If you come to SXSW and don't get here, you didn't get your money's worth. A couple of the local KC artists were on display, Tad Carpenter and Hammer Press. Both were among the best at the show...

After that we wanted to see Kate Walsh. But first, it was time for someone named Kim Hiorthoy. Congrats... we have a new worst band of SXSW and this will be hard to beat. Basically the Norwegian electronic artist came out and did one song. A long thudding, droning 15 minute headache titled something like "Music from a Music Convention" or some pretentious crap like that. Uh... thanks.

But as if to demonstrate the range of music you can see at South By, that train wreck was followed by the sweet voice of Kate Walsh. This is not the Grey's Anatomy actrees but rather a Brighton-based singer. We got to hear a radio interview with her and I'm not sure there's a kinder, more upbeat person this side of Sia. This one goes on the shopping list.

Doing another musical 180, we were off to see Dizzie Rascal. Or should I say Dizzie Rascal and friends? See Dizz has his own label and he brought along a couple of acts from the label to warm up the crowd. That's a stock hip-hop move that probably goes back before Dr. Dre did the same with Snoop Dogg & Eminem. But these guys were no Snoop and Marshall. Amateur hour, indeed. Dizzie was solid though, befitting his place as the king of UK grime.

We poked our head in Emo's Annex to check out the Von Bondies. It was a solid hard rockin' set and the band has a new record in the cue. The highpoint, of course, was a ripping early Who-like version of C'mon C'mon. The only downside was the frat boys that were waiting for it so they could act like tools for their buddies...

There was a long line at Stubbs, but unlike with REM, we were in front of most of it to see the Ting Tings. There's been a lot of buzz around these guys and I can see why. After a couple of technical glitches, they ripped through a set filled with insanely catchy, danceable indie pop like "That's Not My Name" and "Great DJ". Another one for the shopping list.

One of the bigger disappointments of SXSW was up next... Philly's Santogold. The bar for female indie hip-hop has been set high by M.I.A. and apart from the catchy single "L.E.S. Artists", this was mostly generic recycled beats. Yawn...

So we head off to catch X at the Convention Center. I sneak away from the line to go see Ryan Bingham, who I think is also doing an earlier live gig for Direct TV on the adjoining soundstage. Bingham's a roots rock artist on Lost Highway who's been getting solid reviews for his CD, Mescalito.

Except it's not Ryan Bingham... it's Ryan Cabrera. I'm standing there thinking that he doesn't really look like the picture I saw of Bingham... and he doesn't sound like a Lost Highway type artist. Two songs later I walk out, scratching my head and look at the posted schedule. Only then do I realize my grave error. Cabrera's part of the whole Jessica/Ashley Simpson scene. Now it all makes sense... Ugh.

But it doesn't take X long to get Cabrera out of my head. Once again, it's the veteran rockers that show everyone how it's done. It was about a 60 minute set, mostly greatest hits (not that these guys were ever allowed to have hits). These guys, simply put, are one of the greatest live bands you'll ever see. The fact that they aren't in the Rock Hall of Fame, yet Madonna just got in tells you all you need to know about the music industry. Exene has more rock'n'roll in a hangnail on her pinkie toe than 100 Madonnas could dream about in 100 years. Best show of the trip so far...

Grades: Kim Hiorthoy F, Walsh B+, Dizzee Rascal B, Dizzee Rascal's Friends D, The Von Bondies B+, The Ting Tings A-, Santogold C, Ryan Cabrera C-, X A+

Today, we're getting an early start and going for volume...

    SXSW 2008: Day Two (Thursday)

Ok, so the shoes make all the difference. Man, switching to the running shoes and now my feet don't feel like someone took a hammer to them.

We started out the day kinda roughly, hitting the convention trade show in the attempt to score an invite to the SPIN day party on Friday. Got shut out there. Then I had an uncomfortable but brief conversation with someone from Sound Exchange regarding internet radio royalties.

She: We think that broadcast radio should have to pay too, so that you aren't the only ones.
Me: I think that artists get a ton of free exposure from all the free airtime that we give up to play their songs. If you impose more costs, you'll only drive more stations, broadcast and internet, off the air.

    Guess we'll agree to disagree.

One of the cool things about SXSW is that you never know who you'll walk around the corner and see. As we walked through the displays, the unmistakably-tall Thurston Moore was standing there. Laurie just stared but wouldn't let me take a picture...

Shut out of the SPIN gig, we decide to try to catch Vampire Weekend playing at a daytime gig over at the Parish. When we get there, no one is getting in because it's VIP-only. Shit. Time for Plan C...

We walk over to Emo's to see Tokyo Police Club, but get there to find a long line mixed with badgeholders and those smart folks that have figured out that daytime is the best time to see everyone for free. It's way too long, we'll never get in and with magical powers of our badges temporarily defeated, I'm frustrated and hungry. It's time for a reassessment of the schedule over an early dinner...

4PM and zero bands for the day makes me pretty grumpy. Over barfood served by a too-busy-for-decent-service waitress, we decide that the best approach may be to find a good lineup and hunker down for the night. The pick is Cedar Street Courtyard, but before we go there, Laurie wants to see Sia at 6 pm. Sounds good to me..

We head over to the convention center, where Direct TV is shooting shows in two side-by-side sets in the same big convention-sized room. Getting there early, we're allowed in to watch the Martha Wainwright set. Yeah, yeah... Rufus, Loudon, blah, blah, I know... I can't help but wonder if she'd have the balls to play "Bloody Motherfucking Asshole" from the 2004 EP of the same name. But the set is polite. Way too polite. Between songs, she jokes about the downbeat nature of her songs, then stops likely because of the setting and corrects herself with a "life is good" which she amends to "life is what it is" before heading into a song about a friend's suicide.

By contrast, Sia is all sunshine. The band comes on stage in black light & neon smiley costumes and the crowd waves the glowsticks handed to them as they entered the set. But it's not all about gimmicks. This Aussie chick can sing. She has a huge voice and I expect her to be big. The set moves by in a blur, Sia flashes the audience heart shapes made with her hands together and she's gone. Add this one to the shopping list...

Now we're off to Cedar Street Courtyard, which we discover is famous for having over 150 different kinds of vodka. The night is looking up...

After a couple of Red Bull and vodka selected by our barkeep (Snow Queen is a keeper), we're ready for Islands, an indie pop band from Canada. It's pretty standard indie fare. Neither bad nor great, probably not on the shopping list although briefly considered.

Next up, the demented world of Tim Fite. Where do I even begin? Unlike anyone else, Fite is some combination of street preacher, fun-house ride, stand-up comic, life coach and performance artist, with some great songs thrown in-between the spectacle. It's just him and another guy, unless you count the band of Tim Fites projected on a screen and performing in sync with him as he rips through songs like "Big Mistake" from his upcoming CD (already in rotation on Musical Justice). In between songs, he leads audience participation teaching the crowd to sing along while encouraging them to burn down everything they see. Fite's amazing... if you ever have the chance to see him, go. Another one for the shopping list...

Try as I might, I'm having a tough time mustering much excitement for the 3 bands at Cedar Street that stand between us and the closer, Billy Bragg. So it's off to Stubbs in hopes of seeing Alejandro Escovedo. We get there in time to catch the end of Mason Jennings' set which was competent but unremarkable singer-songwriter fare. Might have been ok opening for another act somewhere else, but not here today.

Not surprisingly, Stubbs is about 60% full for Alejandro's set. He's been playing a Tuesday night residency at the Continental Club so the locals can see him whenever they want. But man, what a treat for us out-of-towners. Alejandro rocked louder and harder than anyone we've seen and could have given Van the Man some lessons on bringing energy to the set.

In addition to the typical favorites like "Castanets" and "Everybody Loves Me", Escovedo did a healthy chunk from his upcoming CD, Real Animal. Especially impressive was the title track, a tribute to Iggy Pop, which captures Pop's fury with Alejandro standing at the mike, no guitar (a rarity) and stalking the stage like a young punk rocker. Al's looking great too. This set made me very happy on a number of levels and I can't wait to hear the rest of the new CD.

Since Stubbs' was way under capacity and there was no line waiting to get in, we decided to wander down the street to see if we could get into the Mohawk Patio to see Jens Lekman and Black Mountain. Once again, the badge parted the seas of people around the entrance and we pretty much walked right in... to the worst venue that we've been in this trip.

I don't think this place is a full time music venue. The stage was so low, that it took one entire song to realize that a seated Bon Iver was still doing their set. I just thought that "Skinny Love" was background music until people started applauding at the end. Their set was low-energy (seated) and not all that interesting. Yawn.

The area around the stage was packed to the point of just being really uncomfortable. The stage appeared to be about waist-high off the ground so unless you were in the front 8-10 feet you couldn't see much of anything. There was a raised deck/patio surrounding the courtyard area where the stage and most of the people were, so we went up there and found out that the place was huge. Unfortunately, that only added to the problem since it expanded the capacity of the place without really giving many people a decent view of the stage. A pretty shitty place to see live music in spite of its' local reputation.

By the time Lekman hit the stage, we had worked our way into a little perch where we could see the stage. Jens put on an entertaining, well-received set. It was pretty clear that much of the audience was there for him, applauding in recognition as their favorites played... "The Opposite of Hallelujah", "A Sweet Summer's Night on Hammer Hill". I wasn't sure how good he'd be live, but I left thinking that I need to play these songs more than I have and buy more than the singles off iTunes...

So, what is it with bands playing at 1 AM and taking 40 minutes to set up? By the time Black Mountain started 30 minutes late at 1:30 AM, they'd only have 30 minutes to play since Austin shuts it down at 2. Musically, the band feels like a cross between Led Zeppelin and X. I'm still trying to figure out if that works for me. Last night, I wasn't overwhelmed but maybe it's just not my thing.

Walking back to the car, sure enough, another big rockstar bus in front of the Cedar Door. Who was it tonight? Scrambling for our schedule... it's Bowling for Soup. We peek in and this time, instead of the 36 people listening to Bo Bice like last night, there's a full house listening to them close out their set with the hit, 1985. Go figure...

    Here are the day's grades...

Grades: Wainwright C, Sia A, Islands B-, Tim Fite A-, Alejandro A, Bon Iver C- (The Mohawk Lounge F), Jens Lekman B+, Black Mountain B-, Bowling For Soup I (Incomplete)

    SXSW 2008: Day 1

And so it began. Let's call this one SXSW: The Name-Dropping Edition...

Fast lines at the convention center were a welcomed kick-off to my ninth straight SXSW. I don't know if the overall attendance was down. It makes sense that it could be with tough times in the music industry. But whatever the reason, the two hours that we blocked off to get in and get our badges was whittled down to a mere 15 minutes tops.

Left with time to wander, we grabbed our swag bags (which I'll review in detail later) and stumbled into our first band of the trip, Brooklyn's A Place To Bury Strangers playing at the SESAC Day Stage. The band has been called "the loudest band in New York" and I could see why. Even in this less-than ideal setting with bored industry wonks sitting around checking their schedules, they put in a buzz-worthy performance. Laurie said they reminded her of Joy Division and I think that's pretty good. I'll be adding them to my post-SXSW shopping list. Score one for the Bronx.

Swag bags in tow and time to spare, we decided to cart them back to the car and grab a bite to eat at the Cedar Door next to the garage. As we were sitting there eating, a big black rockstar bus pulls up in front, which set us scrambling for our pocket guide to see who was playing there that night. A quick scan... oh my, it's Bo Bice, American Idol runner-up to Carrie Underwood. A couple of snarky comments later and we're back to figuring out the schedule for the night.

We decide that we're going to start with Van Morrison at La Zona Rosa, then walk clear to the other side of downtown to catch Jeffrey Lewis and the Jitters. After that, we'll had back across town to Antone's to try to see the Kills and another blog buzz act, White Williams.

Waiting in the line for Van the Man, we run into a couple of nice gents from South Africa making their first trip to Austin. Quite a trip they'd had to even get to that spot and as such, they were thrilled to be seeing such a legendary performer out of the gate. During our long wait in line we got to hear about a recent trip to the Led Zeppelin reunion at O2 where this guy was back stage with the likes of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Mick Jagger, and soul legend Ben E. King. We exchanged cards and he told me he had a band for me to check out called Desmond and the Tutus. The Strokes meet Vampire Weekend. Here's their Myspace page... Not bad...

Also while waiting in line for Van, we saw a number of journalists waiting to gain press access. Most notable was David Fricke from Rolling Stone, who got in before us for whatever reason, then was standing by himself against the wall about midway back during the set. Ah the lonely life of the rock journalist... Told you this was going to be the name-dropping edition.

We learned a lesson about camera policy when one of the South Africans was sent back to his car because he had an non-SXSW approved camera. Twice before the gig, the crowd was warned that anyone caught taking pictures, even with a lowly cell phone, could be evicted and have their gear confiscated. Any bets that within a week, you'll still be able to find video on YouTube?

First thing I notice once the doors open is that this isn't just "dad rock", it's "grandpa rock". Median age of the crowd has to be over 50 and with better than 80% male, it's a bit of a sausagefest. Why no love amongst the females for Van? Hmmmm...

Van and his 11 piece band put in a very professional performance, but I found myself bored and frustrated. I checked my watch at least 4 times in an hour... never a good sign. I don't think they ever broke a sweat. Kinda like having a champion thoroughbred and then never letting it break out of a trot. The set list had no real classic Van material and the newer stuff, while adequate, isn't nearly as great as the man performing it.

Being in the room with that powerfully soulful voice itself was amazing. Listening to Van scat, worth the trip by itself. I just wish that he had something or someone pushing him. When some guy shouted out a request, Morrison snarled "Ah, fuck off!" He's Van Morrison, bitch... and he's got nothing left to prove to us mere mortals.

So it was off to walk cross town to Club De Ville. On the way, we check out Antone's to see what kind of line we might be coming back to and there are a ton of kids waiting to get into the Domino Records showcase there. We start reconsidering the walk back since it looks like it could be a tough ticket, even with a badge.

The best part about getting to Club De Ville was finding a couple of seats to give our feet a rest. As we listen to Deer Tick, we decide that we'll try to see REM just down the street at Stubbs rather than risk the Antone's gig and get shut out. SXSW is all about choices and strategy and being flexible, I say...

During Deer Tick's middling set, we spot John Doe heading for the door. Don't think he's got a gig, so I take this for agreement on my assessment of the band. As they wrap up the set, Deer Tick tried to pump up the crowd with a cover of Richie Valens' La Bamba although they're doing the Los Lobos version. Deer Tick, I've seen Los Lobos many times. I've even taken a piss next to Cesar Rosas backstage in Cincinnati. Deer Tick, you are no Los Lobos...

Jeffrey Lewis's 12 Crass Songs made NME's top 50 albums of 2007, so he comes with a lot of buzz. Lewis has been called a genius. His set was dense, brainy and folky-punk. Kinda reminded me of Den Bern or Hamell on Trial but without quite their sense of humor. Still this was great stuff watching Lewis's comic book "documentary" on the History of Communism, Part 3 or channeling indie angst on the notable "Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror". Add another one to the shopping list.

After Lewis, we walked past a relatively short line waiting to get into Stubbs for REM so we decided to squeeze in a short set from Be Your Own Pet a couple blocks away at Emo's. This was a 25 minute set... which gives them a chance to play about 20 songs. Jemina Pearl, BYOP's lead singer, wants to kick your ass and grind you into a spot on the ground. Raw, sexy & primal...

Heading back to Stubbs, we're shocked to see the once-short Stubbs line now extended down the block and doubled back on itself. A closer look and it's also all badges. We're fucked. We get in line but then reason that if REM has sucked all the badges down here, we might have our pick of the other venues. REM was Plan B anyway, so we're back to Plan A, walking our tired dogs back across town to Antone's. Our guess was right and we pretty much walk right in for the start of the Kills' set.

Seeing BYOP and the Kills back to back, you're seeing two of the best female rockers working today. But where Jemina's raw and energetic, the Kills' vocalist/guitarist Alison "VV" Mosshart will fuck with your head as well as your heart. She stalks the stage like a leopard and you'll only survive the encounter if she lets you. And the lead guitarist, Jamie Hinch, tears off lean angular guitar riffs over a crashing rock drum machine beat. Hinch has been rumored to be Kate Moss's latest main man in the post-Doherty era, but alas, no Moss sightings at Antone's... Best set of the day.

Following the Kills was already a tough order, but White Williams made it even tougher by losing any momentum they were handed with an overly-long and fussy soundcheck that ate about 15 minutes into their set and left them with about half the Kills' crowd. Williams is another blogger buzz artist who's playing about 10 times at SXSW so maybe this'll get better with practice. The general rule here is that you've only got 10-15 minutes between sets, so you better strap it on and go. Guess Williams didn't get that memo... he's a knob twiddler, with a lot of processed effects on his voice anyway, so I'm not sure what all the fine tuning was about. Seems like there was a level of precision that wasn't supported by his actual musical talents. Anyway, his set was ok. Definitely dancable, but I'm not sure it'll make it onto the shopping list.

Looking forward to the car at this point, we walked back past the Cedar Door, where we could hear Bo Bice working it out. I decided to peek over the security fence to see what was going on. Holy shit, it's empty. This was a decent size venue and Bo Bice is playing to 36 people. Yeah, I counted. I think a couple of them might have been working there. That's not going to pay for that big rockstar bus out front. Laurie says she feels sorry for him. I can see that. We listen for awhile. He's working those 36 people like they were 36,000. Kudos for that. Apart from some lame between song patter ("that was as country as cornbread", "they say things are bigger in Texas"), he's a talented guy, nice voice, decent guitarist. But the hip buzz-seeking crowd at SXSW isn't his audience and I'm sure that was a tough lesson learned...

So that's day one. My feet are already in Day 3 shape and that scares me. Time to switch from my walking shoes (comfortable, reasonably-padded but still decent-looking) to my running shoes (even more padded, but all hope for style points are gone).

Here are Wednesday's grades: A Place To Bury Strangers B, Van Morrison B (Van's performance A, Van's material C), Deer Tick C, Jeffrey Lewis and the Twitters B+, Be Your Own Pet B, The Kills A-, White Williams C+, Bo Bice B-

    SXSW 2008

Woohoo! Time to head off to Austin. Keep an eye out here for daily coverage...

MJTV: Iggy Pop - Ray Of Light (live)

This is a really strange one: Iggy covers Madonna at her induction to the Rock Hall of Fame. What a bunch of industry turds down in front with Iggy telling 'em to "Feel something". And is the next reinvention Madge as the 1960's version of Zsa Zsa Gabor? Yikes!

The Money Shot:: That New Business Sounds A Lot Like Radio, The End of The Line For NME and Are The Labels Stiffing Artists Over YouTube?

    Today's headlines...

They think it's all over for the NME
    (Times Online)
MS: “Rock is no longer counter-cultural, it's in the bloodstream of the new status quo,” Hoskyns argues. “Coverage of rock is ubiquitous, therefore it no longer requires its own media ghettos. Rock writers have dumbed down, or at least played down, their own quirks and idiosyncrasies to accommodate the above.”

    Free Music, Big Money (Forbes)
MS: "What imeem's proposing--and there are other companies out there trying to do it too--is, rather than monetizing the consumer's wallet, which is a finite budget and not all that big, monetize their attention,'' explains imeem Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Business Development Steve Jang.

"If you monetize attention properly, it's a much bigger market because you're not monetizing consumer wallets anymore, you're monetizing brand advertisers," says Jang.

Ad-supported access to music? Sounds like radio. But it isn't. Terrestrial radio doesn't pay record labels for use of their recordings, nor does it share the ad revenue it generates. And radio listeners can't choose which songs they want to listen to.

Musicians still waiting on a YouTube payday (CNET)
MS: Some top music managers have told CNET News.com that their clients haven't seen any money from the licensing deals the four largest music labels have signed with YouTube over the past 18 months. According to a statement from Google-owned YouTube, the Web site is banking ad dollars generated by the artist's music and is sharing that money with the record labels. What the managers want to know is why little or nothing has trickled down to the artists.

"I don't know any artist who has gotten a royalty statement (from their label that includes YouTube money)," said music attorney Chris Castle.

The Money Shot: Radiohead Is Not Giving Music Industry The Finger, Radiohead CDs May Be Grounds 4 Divorce, Radiohead Gives Music Industry The Finger

    An all Radiohead edition...

Radiohead are not the saviours of music (National Post)
MS: Radiohead is not the future of music. Radiohead is not the solution to a mainstream that's become a sensationalistic slaughterhouse of taste. Radiohead is not giving the music industry the finger.

Thom Yorke: Radiohead albums make me 'difficult' (NME)
MS: “I think my missus isn’t ready to hear it [’In Rainbows’] yet. Having seen me go through the mill making it,” Yorke told Rolling Stone. “It’s a difficult thing for her to watch me go through the whole process. She doesn’t like it. So she’s not exactly ready to listen to the music.”

Radiohead Managers Win Innovation Award For 'In Rainbows' (Gigwise)
MS: The Courtyard Management pair won the award for the ‘pay-what-you-want’ method which the band used to release their latest album, ‘In Rainbows’.

The awards judges said that Courtyard were the “clear winners”. “They managed to revolutionise the way music is sold and marketed almost overnight," they added.

The Money Shot: Keep Steve Earle Away From Your Sheep, Rachael Ray: Not A Food Robot & Gnarls Barkley May Be Dangerous To Your Health...

    More news headlines...

New Gnarls Barkley Video May Make Fans Dizzy (Billboard)
MS: "I don't know exactly what's going on, but we're having issues. I think [the video] is cool. It works for me. But I'm not necessarily that easily seasick," he says with a laugh. "We can't predict how people are going to interpret it."

Rachael Ray Defends Her Indie-Rock SXSW Party, Featuring Raveonettes, Holy F--- And Mac 'N Cheese
    (MTV)
MS: I find it weird that they find it weird. People think I'm like this food robot or something, but music is a huge part of my life," she continued. "I'm a huge fan of rock music in general — all kinds. I like indie stuff, my favorite band is the Foo Fighters. When I first met my husband, he told me what he made for dinner the night before, and I thought, 'OK, well, he can cook.' And then he told me he had a band and I was like, 'Aw, jeez. I hope they're good,' because I couldn't deal with someone who didn't play good music."

Singer Steve Earle brings brand of bluegrass to Toronto (The Star)
MS: "Don't worry – this isn't bluegrass," the 53-year-old troubadour said. "Bluegrass is a very sophisticated form of music, like bebop. This ain't that kind of banjo. This is the kind of banjo that scares sheep."

The Money Shot: Why Beatle Bob Pisses People Off, Joaquin Phoenix Digs The Charlatans' Free Album, and Are iPods Causing iCrime?

    Today's headlines...

Johnny Cash actor makes the most of Charlatans download (NME)
The band are currently let fans have the record via XFM’s website, and among those taking advantage of the giveaway has been actor Joaquin Phoenix.

The star of ’Gladiator’ who played Johnny Cash in the 2005 biopic ’Walk The Line’, downloaded the album yesterday (March 3) and has spoken of his love for ’You Cross My Path’.

"Holy fucking shit, The Charlatans record is mega,” he declared. “A real beauty. I can't wait to see it live."

Did iPods cause a crime wave?
    (AP)
MS: One widely accepted theory holds that crime happens when three things come together: A motivated offender encounters a suitable victim and perceives a high chance of getting away with it. And the Urban Institute researchers believe the sudden prevalence of iPods increased all three factors.

Motivation: The iPod's several-hundred-dollar expense and pop-culture buzz made potential thieves, especially young ones, crave the device for themselves or for a lucrative resale market. Suitable victims: People listening through the iconic white earphones are easy to pick out and often unaware of their surroundings. Easy to get away with: IPods lack a mechanism that would pinpoint a thief's location or a subscription that could be canceled by the rightful owner.

Tastemaker or attention seeker? For Beatle Bob, the concert never stops
    (Canadian Press)
MS: His dedication, musical knowledge and geeky cool-by-association cred has led to cameos in music videos and hosting gigs at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, South by Southwest, Glastonbury, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and more. He dances like a man possessed. Hands flaying, feet shuffling, happily out of rhythm and blissfully oblivious to other audience members - including those whose views he blocks. He almost always dances alone, usually right in front of the stage. And while the full-time fan has his admirers, plenty of other music lovers are fed up with what they consider churlish behaviour.

"If you go to one or two concerts a year, he's fun to watch, like a sideshow," said Wade Alberty of St. Louis. "But if you go to a lot of shows, he can often be in the way more than entertaining."

Alberty grew tired of it. So he started an online petition and website imploring "Beatle Bob (to) sit down!" Nearly 300 like-minded fans signed on, offering unflattering stories about their own encounters. "It's as if he tries to make a spectacle of himself instead of just enjoying the show," said Alberty, a writer and computer programmer. "I go to concerts to see the band. I don't go to see him."

The Money Shot: Wilco Was Radiohead First, Josh Ritter's Not Going Full Frontal, and All We Need is Radio(head) Ga-Ga...

    Today's news...

How the internet went Radiohead gaga (Times Online)
MS: “There’s a compliment there,” Yorke acknowledges, speaking in a low, unhurried voice. “The fact that people want to get hold of what you’ve done. But if it’s not the definitive version, if the ends are chopped off, if you haven’t made the choice to do it yourself, it’s a bit unfair. Bad karma. So it felt very liberating to take complete control… If I die tomorrow, I’ll be happy that we didn’t carry on working within this huge industry that I don’t feel any connection with. But the idea wasn’t to make a big, significant statement. We knew it would be messing with things a little bit, but we just wanted to get the album to people who’d been waiting patiently for four years. I really thought it would be a splash in a little pond. I was surprised at how much the media picked up on it.”

Wilco reinterprets cornucopia of music (Des Moines Register)
MS: "We’ve really done that since 'Yankee Hotel.’ We did it the biggest first. We supported or promoted our 2001 tour of America with 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ online. We were there doing that at an early stage. And we’ve continued to put everything online.

“They were smart not to have a label when they did it. It has changed everything. All of a sudden, you’re asking your label, 'Why do you get this percentage?’ Thank God for Radiohead. A lot of people are going to get paid (higher) royalty rates.”

Josh Ritter Takes Performances Up A Decibel (Grand Rapids Press)
MS: "I'm as concerned as anybody about what's happening, but I also feel a full frontal approach in terms of songs comes off as sounding ridiculous," he said. "I don't believe musicians are political scientists and I don't believe musicians should be politicians or preachers. ... Music is about describing a situation, not about finding all the answers. It's more about talking about the questions."

The Money Shot: Little Steven's Timeless Vibe, Is Neil Young Nuts? and Travis Unsigned and Liberated...

Travis: 'Being Unsigned Is Liberating' (The Sun)
MS: “Worried? Nah, why should we be? This record is good. It’s going to surprise a lot of people. For the first time we are an unsigned band with a fanbase and we’re in the studio. We’ll look after the music then our manager will deal with the business side. It’s liberating. We’re all buzzing.”

Little Steven: On old rock, Bruce & Journey (Back To Rockville)
MS: We get e-mails from listeners 12-, 14-years-old saying, “Thank you for turning me onto that group called the Kinks. I’d never heard of them or the Animals or those guys you call the Hollies.” Their first reactions are the same as ours were: “Who is this guy Eddie Cochran?” It still sounds fresh; it’s really timeless.

Neil Young: On The Road Again (Telegraph)
MS: In Atlanta, Georgia, the show began well - then broke into boos, cheers and a stampede for the exit when the most inflammatory number, Let's Impeach The President", began.

"We knew that was going to happen," says Young, who received death threats (though these aren't mentioned in the film).

"There were other towns that were equally violent - Atlanta was just the one we captured the best. It was the most nerve-racking experience I've been through on stage and the most dangerous thing I've done. The thing most likely not to be repeated.

"It's almost personal. People don't even mention the music. It's: 'Who does he think he is? Is he trying to reinvent himself and make himself seem important? He's lost his mind! He had an aneurysm. When people have a near-death experience, they do all kinds of weird things afterwards.'"
