The Money Shot: MSN Music Gives U Reason 2 Buy An iPod Just In Time 2 Save Apple From The iPod Death Spiral or Explore Other Music Options Online

The latest headlines in a special digital music edition...

MSN Music Files Won't Play On New Devices After August (Information Week)
MS: As of August 31st, we will no longer be able to support the retrieval of license keys for the songs you purchased from MSN Music or the authorization of additional computers," Microsoft said in an e-mail that was sent Tuesday to former MSN Music customers.

That means consumers who purchased songs from MSN Music and who want to port their library to a new device -- in case of, say, a hardware failure or desire to upgrade -- won't be able to do so after the end of August.

Given the life of today's computer hardware and mobile devices, Microsoft's decision effectively places an expiration date of about three to five years on song libraries that MSN Music customers thought they had purchased for life.

How Apple Is Preparing for an iPod Slump (NY Times)
MS: Still, the number of iPods sold in the quarter grew only 1 percent from the same quarter a year ago. And sales of the low-end iPod Shuffle have been falling sharply. In response, Apple lowered the price of the 1-gigabyte shuffle from $79 to $49, helping to stanch the decline. Apple executives speaking on a conference call Wednesday afternoon gave few details, as is their custom.

For some companies, a mature market and downward pressure on prices could lead to a nasty death spiral. But Apple has used its amazing six-year run with the iPod to nurture enough new business lines that it will be able to withstand a collapse in the MP3-player market as well as can be imagined.

From Bricks and Mortar to Digital Music Master (Business Week)
MS: Music industry experts say small shops have some advantages over chains. Used CDs and vinyl records have higher markups and attract collectors, giving independent stores an edge, says Aram Sinnreich, co-founder of Radar Research, a Los Angeles media and technology consultant. "These small retailers are the kinds of places that build musical communities in ways that Wal-Mart (WMT) and Best Buy (BBY) and even Tower Records never really could," Sinnreich says. Tower went bankrupt in 2006 and closed its U.S. retail stores, including one just a block from Other Music.

Madell says he expected the chains to go under before independent stores. Casual customers more interested in singles than albums can download their fix more easily than the fanatics who haunt places like Other Music. And the Internet exposes more fans to artists beyond those played on the radio or MTV. "I think the market for interesting, underground, cutting-edge music is bigger than it ever was," Madell says. "How to capitalize on that market and make it a real business is another question."

The Money Shot: Music Industry Wants A Handout From Everyone, Paul Simon = Song Thief?, Is Pitchfork On The Mark or Jumping The Shark?

    More news headlines...

Pitchfork separates the musical wheat from the pop chaff
    (Guardian)
MS: Today, Pitchfork is more polished, more professional and more responsible than it used to be, and deservedly more popular. It is even making money. But it's also less idiosyncratic and has lost some of the roughness that helped give it a cutting edge. The same kind of thing happens to indie bands when they hit the mainstream.

Whether Pitchfork will turn into a rich dinosaur like Rolling Stone remains to be seen, but it looks like staying sharp for at least a few more years.

    Hangin' With Steve Berlin (JamBase)
MS: "You don't like it? Sue me. You'll see what happens." We were floored. We had no idea. The record (Graceland) comes out, and he's a big hit. Retroactively, he had to give songwriting credit to all the African guys he stole from that were working on it and everyone seemed to forget. But that's the kind of person he is. He's the world's biggest prick, basically.

    The Music Industry's Extortion Scheme
    (Slate)
MS: Warner Music Group is trying to rally the rest of the industry behind a plan to charge Internet service providers $5 per customer per month, an amount that would be added to your Internet bill. In exchange, music lovers would get all the online tunes they want, meaning that anyone who spends more than $60 a year on music will come out way ahead. Download whatever you want and pay nothing! No more DRM! Swap files to your heart's content—we promise, we won't sue you (or snatch your ice-cream cone)!

    New NIN

In what may be the future of digital music releases, NIN surprised everyone with a new single today. The track is called "Discipline" and it looks like it was finished just yesterday...

It appears this song was sent to radio stations across the United States, and most of them played it between 2:30 and 2:45pm Eastern Time, resulting in a bit of a flood of very surprised emails headed our way. The song was mastered by Alan Moulder yesterday afternoon, and turned over to radio stations less than 24 hours later!

This kind of instant digital release may be the only way to beat the leaks. If anyone's got a copy they wouldn't mind sharing so we can put it on the air, let me know...

    R.I.P. Danny Federici

The E Street keyboardist passed away Thursday after a 3 year battle with melanoma. He was just 58...

In a band with larger-than-life characters such as saxophonist Clarence Clemons and bandana-wrapped guitarist "Little" Steven Van Zandt, Federici was content to play in his familiar position to the side of the stage. But his playing was as vital to Springsteen's live show as any instrument in the band.

Here's some rare video from 1978 with a bearded Federici on accordian during the classic "Sandy"...

And here's the same song from his last appearance with the band in Indy last month...

MJTV: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band with Alejandro Escovedo - Always A Friend (live)

I guess I should have seen this one-off performance coming when Alejandro signed with longtime Springsteen manager, Jon Landau. But still, even with their distinctive voices not used to blending, it gave me goosebumps to see these two icons on stage together in Houston performing a track from Escovedo's upcoming Real Animal...

The Boss Says Barock's Born To Run...

This just in from Springsteen's website. Somehow this endorsement seems a bit more authentically working class than Hillary's shot and a beer and it could have a big impact on the Philly voters who've always considered Bruce one of their own...

    In Bruce's words:

    Dear Friends and Fans:

LIke most of you, I've been following the campaign and I have now seen and heard enough to know where I stand. Senator Obama, in my view, is head and shoulders above the rest.

He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next President. He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where "...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone."

At the moment, critics have tried to diminish Senator Obama through the exaggeration of certain of his comments and relationships. While these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision, so well described in his excellent book, Dreams of My Father, often in order to distract us from discussing the real issues: war and peace, the fight for economic and racial justice, reaffirming our Constitution, and the protection and enhancement of our environment.

After the terrible damage done over the past eight years, a great American reclamation project needs to be undertaken. I believe that Senator Obama is the best candidate to lead that project and to lead us into the 21st Century with a renewed sense of moral purpose and of ourselves as Americans.

Over here on E Street, we're proud to support Obama for President.

The Money Shot: 10 Great Rock Docs, The Late Great No Depression and Labels Heavily Taxing New Music Services...

    Some "tax day" headlines...

    Some Depression (Nashville Scene)
MS: Not only did No Depression cultivate high-quality writing over the years, it also widened the focus declared on its masthead from “Alt. Country (Whatever That Is)” to “Surveying the Past, Present, and Future of American Music (Whatever That Is).” (Obviously, the parameters have never quite been crystal clear.) Coverage-wise, that meant it gradually cast the net a bit wider, drawing in performers more diverse in age, race and style than strictly alt-country bands.

“The editors had that conversation about what direction to take the magazine at a time when a lot of the real darlings of the first couple years were kind of relinquishing their alt-country roots,” Friskics-Warren says. “Wilco was getting experimental, and the Jayhawks were saying, ‘We’re a pop band.’ The old guard sort of moved on, or at least didn’t want to be associated too closely with the alt-country movement. Those conversations we had were really interesting. A couple of us were pushing for what folks referred to as the American Mojo. We didn’t go that direction. But the magazine did broaden to a more general roots music publication with an emphasis on American musical vernacular.”

    Top 10 Rock Docs (IGN.com)
MS: 5. The Filth and the Fury

Twenty years after making The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, Julien Temple gathered together the surviving Pistols to chart the 26 months in which the band actually existed - a period shorter than the prog rock albums that punk would help eradicate - and the social and cultural misery that spawned it. The new interviews are brutally honest and often hilarious, while Temple ensures that his cinematic collage is doused in the mischievous spirit of '77. And then set on fire.

Digital music firms pay heavy price for labels' support (Reuters)
MS: "They're trying to match every dollar against a lost dollar, not nurturing new markets," Digital Media Assn. executive director Jonathan Potter said at Billboard's Music & Money Symposium in March. "That's not helping build a business. You need each party to have an equal incentive."

Yet one of the more controversial label demands -- an equity stake -- may in fact prove advantageous for services entering into such a deal. Labels receive dozens of partnership requests almost daily, many of which they don't think have any chance of surviving with or without their help. As such, they are only too happy to forget about them once the check clears.

But if the labels have an equity stake in the company, they have more skin in the game and a greater incentive to nurture the company along.

The Money Shot: Indie Rock Is The Next Adult Contemporary, Bands Are Still Selling Out & Is Natalie Portman Really Dating Devendra Banhart? (Really?)

The latest update has some troubling news...

Spending on live music up this year (Hollywood Reporter)
MS: North American-based companies will spend an estimated $1.04 billion to sponsor music venues, festivals, tours and concerts this year, a 4% increase over 2007, according to a new study.

"The 4% growth rate is down from the double-digit increases seen in previous years, due in large part to the slowing economy," said William Chipps, senior editor of IEG Sponsorship Report, which tracks sponsorship spending. "But, by and large, corporate spending on live music remains healthy."

Natalie Portman's New Boyfriend: Loveable Hippie Or Serial Killer? (Defamer Australia)
MS: So who is this caveman-esque guy and what on earth is Natalie thinking? While at first glance folksy singer Devendra Banhart hardly looks like a pretty boy, we found some far more flattering shots of Natalie's new arm candy with his guitar from years ago. And even if Devendra's put on a pound or two since they were taken, we still had to do a double take and make sure we weren't looking at photos of Jim Morrison himself.

How Indie Rock Morphed Into Adult Contemporary
    (New York Press)
MS: The indie kids learned to do a lot in the last decade: First they found downloading, then they discovered dancing and finally—they went to work. And on their way to their 10 a.m. start times, their casual Mondays-through-Fridays, their five-dollar-a-day coffee habits, they assembled a so-appropriate soundtrack. Something that keeps their cred intact, their superiors pacified (even at audible-over-the-cubicles volume) and their New Yorker reading appropriately soundtracked.

The Money Shot: Klosterman's Take On Missing Music $$, Labels Depressed By Loss of No Depression, Deep Purple & White Stripes Make Colorful Riffs

    More from today's headlines...

Anyone Seen My $4.2 Billion? (Esquire)
MS: While we'll never know exactly where all those bones disappeared, my specific theory is this: A lot of the money not spent on music in the twenty-first century is being used to pay off credit-card debt that was incurred during the nineties. In other words, not paying for In Rainbows today is helping people eliminate the balance they still owe for buying Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness when they were broke in 1995.

Record labels hit by demise of music magazines (Reuters)
MS: Labels are also ruing the demise of Harp's and No Depression's lengthy review sections, and seemed unsure about where to take their artists for coverage. "We're probably going to look at specialty folk magazines," Burnside Distribution VP Bill McNally says. Wittman says that he will still pursue pitching Rolling Stone and Spin, but, "it seems like everyone is cutting their CD review sections. It seems like a better strategy to target Amazon and All Music Guide because they have almost unlimited review space."

Doo doo doo: "Smoke on the Water" still top riff
    (Reuters)
MS: Deep Purple's 1973 hit "Smoke on the Water" is the greatest guitar riff of all time, according to a poll by a London music school that has taught members of top bands like Radiohead, The Kinks and The Cure. The majority of the 25 songs selected by current students of the London Tech Music School, were recorded in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Only seven were recorded in the last 20 years.

"It was the iconic era for the electric guitar." head of the school's Guitar and Bass section John Wheatcroft told Reuters. "A lot of our students started listening to their parents records and discovered these bands through them."

The most recent song selected was "Seven Nation Army" recorded by American rock band The White Stripes in 2003.

The Money Shot: Dulli Calls Out Pitchfork & Stereogum, Katie White Is So NOT Getting Naked For You, & Is Feist Jumping The Shark?

Tough day for Stereogum in today's headlines...

    Interview: The Gutter Twins (Pitchfork)
MS: I think the Shins and Iron and Wine make nice music, you know? I don't know a lot about them but I've heard some stuff. You just kind of like what you like. Even when I was on Sub Pop, luckily, I liked Mudhoney, I liked Tad, I liked Nirvana, I liked the Fluid, I liked L7, I liked Cat Butt. So I did like the bands they were putting out. When they first started putting out Mark's solo records that, to me, was their first turn into another style of music. He was certainly trying something new but...I like what I like, I don't really associate it with towns or movements of labels.

I listen to new music frequently. Jeff Klein, he plays keyboards in our group, he's like 29 or 30, he turned me on to Pitchfork and Stereogum and stuff like that. I don't really read much music stuff but I was aware of this kind of-- and I'm going to get killed for saying this-- snarky hipsterism, exclusionary thing. It's like, "We listen to bands that haven't even formed yet." That punk rock thing of trying to be cool...

Ting Tings Singer Rejected FHM Shoot Request (Gigwise)
MS: "In our last band we were at Mercury and in the first ever meeting they brought that up. I was literally like fuck off!" explained the singer.

Katie showed her strong willed side by saying: "It's the last thing on earth I would do."

The Question Mark: Is Feist Still Indie?
    (National Post)
MS: 5. Rotate This, Toronto: "Feist isn't indie, no! Absolutely not, stereogum* called her the iPod lady with the counting song. It wasn't my decision to make a kazillion, gazillion dollars. I love her her backing band, though: they're indie as hell," Kevin Hegge, Rotate This, Toronto
*Stereogum is an indie music blog. And yeah, we hadn't heard of it either.

The Money Shot: Taxing Your Downloads, Spitzer's Ho Has Hit, & The End of Album Art Is A New Beginning?

    More news headlines...

Digitization Of Album Art Is About New Possibilities, Not Smaller Graphics (Wired)
MS: In my opinion, digital album art and promotional materials should blow their physical counterparts out of the water. Conventional wisdom maintains that album art sits at the wrong end of a devolution, but that doesn't have to be the case. Vinyl has the size advantage, but televisions, cellphones, printers, media players and computer screens can do things a piece of cardboard cannot. It's time for designers to embrace the possibilities of digital album art rather than complaining of its diminishing importance.

    Pimp my song (Boston Herald)
MS: Shortly after New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s sex scandal made headlines, the world learned that his 22-year-old call girl of choice, Ashley Alexandra Dupre (also known as Kristen), was a fledgling r & b singer.

Which turned out to be good news for AmieStreet.com, an up-and-coming independent music download Web site whose offerings included Dupre’s song “Move Ya Body.”

    Plan would tax music downloads
    (San Jose Mercury News)
MS: Don't get too used to those 99-cent downloads from iTunes.

A Los Angeles-area lawmaker trying to help raise money to delete the state government's $8 billion shortfall thinks consumers should pay sales tax when buying from online music stores.

The Money Shot: I Think Feist Just Won Ellen Page, Catching Z's With Coldplay & Moby's Hatin' On Moby...

    The latest news update...

Feist Dominates Juno Awards With Five Wins (Billboard)
MS: Taking single of the year for "1 2 3 4," album of the year and pop album of the year for "The Reminder," Feist took the accolades in stride, joking that her family, who attended the event, were rarely in the same room, let alone one involving a red carpet.

Rock band Coldplay helps you sleep
    (Reuters)
MS: Britons like a dose of rock band Coldplay to help them fall asleep, a survey from hotel chain Travelodge found on Monday. The band, whose frontman Chris Martin says he avoids caffeine and alcohol and is known for a lifestyle that is anything but rock 'n roll, came top in a poll of music choices to help you nod off.

    "I'd hate me too!" (Salon)
MS: You may be sick of Moby, but he won't hold it against you. His 1999 album "Play" was the kind of early success that can cast a shadow over an entire career: It sold 9 million copies, every song was licensed for some commercial purpose, and it injected techno music into the American mainstream consciousness -- almost overnight. That kind of quick fame doesn't come without cost, and Moby has since admitted he became the poster child for selling out. "If I wasn't me," he says now, "I'd hate me too."

The Money Shot: Sub Pop Turns 20, Everybody's a Critic (seriously), and Wal-Mart = Blind Squirrel Finding Nut

    Current headlines...

The end of the critic? (LA Times)
MS: "We tend to be wary of anything that seems over-hyped, whether it's by critics or over-advertising," said Courtney Lear. "Personally, I trust certain actors, artists or directors from previous experiences. The Arcade Fire is playing in Hollywood? Their last album rocked my socks off. When do tickets go on sale? They've already gained my trust."

    SP Festival Rumors Swirl
    (Seattle Sound)
MS: According to a reputable source very close to the festival, who was plied with booze until he let the cat out of the bag, plans for Sub Pop’s 20th Anniversary Festival are in full swing. The dates are set, the location has been chosen and bands are being booked.

Wal-Mart Abandons Windows DRM, Sony/BMG and Warner (Wired)
MS: As Wal-Mart switches to the MP3 music format and redesigns its music store, it leaves behind Microsoft's digital rights management technology, which prevented the songs it sold from being played on iPods. The company has also ditched Sony/BMG and Warner Music Group, for now anyway, probably due to licensing squabbles about the terms of the transition to unprotected music.

The Money Shot: The 10th Anniversary of The MP3 Player, The Mighty Max On His "Boss" and Record Labels Are No Longer Relevant...

    More headlines...

'98 to '08: What we lost along the way (MP3 Insider)
MS: I spent more than two years of my life working in a new and used record store in Sacramento, where used CDs outsold new CDs about four to one. Used CDs not only offered our customers an inexpensive way to acquire new music, it gave people who were bored with their music a way to put money back in their pocket.

Putting aside my nostalgia for used music stores, I think we forget that MP3s are the first music format consumers cannot legally resell. Maybe I'm weird, but over the past 10 years, I've been happy to find myself on both sides of the used music economy--selling CDs to make rent, and buying great old records at garage sales. iTunes has never helped me pay the bills, and aside from illegal file sharing, there's no way to put your MP3s back into circulation after you're tired of them.

Max Weinberg provides an insider's tour of life on E Street
    (OC Register)
MS: The expectation, he says, "if there is one that we carry with us, is not to live up to this idea of being Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. It's to live up to something Bruce said many years ago – that we want to give people more than their money's worth."

But how do you do that when the shows are shorter and the prices higher? Reasonable, yes, especially compared to what other Hall of Famers charge now. But still higher.

"Well, I think the point is, when you're buying a ticket – whether it's for a movie or an extremely expensive Broadway show, or to see us – are you moved by the experience? Have you been changed in some way? That's what we try to do every night – come in to your town, play, change you … and leave."

Record Labels Struggle to Stay Relevant (ABC News)
MS: "Now making a record is inexpensive, and a band could do it on their own for very little money, and it's much easier for them to just sell their stuff online," Gaston said. "The record labels aren't needed for distribution anymore."

"Their primary functions have been undercut by the advancement of technology," he added.

"The labels could theoretically strike these all encompassing deals with their artists like Live Nation has, but it's the question of are the bands up for it?" Gaston said. "Is it not cool to be with a huge label?"

The Money Shot: Radiohead Gets Social, The Possibility of New Music From X, and Live Nation: Music Saviour or Evil Empire?

    Today's news...

X Happy On Tour, But New Music Is 'Daunting' (Billboard)
MS: Doe says that even though the band -- which also includes original guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer DJ Bonebrake -- sounds hot these days, the notion of new material, X's first since "Hey Zeus!" in 1993, is still intimidating.

"It is a little bit of a daunting adventure," he acknowledges. "It's like, 'Alright, you've got to write X songs like you did 20 years ago, 30 years ago.' 'Huh?!' 'OK...let's see how this goes...' But I think if you direct whatever creativity you have towards a certain project, you'll come up with something. You just have to decide if it's good enough."

The rise of concert promoter Live Nation (The Independent)
MS: Record labels themselves are signing "360 degree" deals with their artists that cut them in on these non-music revenues, but Live Nation has been arguing that it has more expertise in these newly important areas. Its work to secure corporate sponsorship for tours and venues can be extended to find sponsorship deals for individual artists, it says, and it can take charge of a band's website to better promote the artists and their merchandise. Our aim, Mr Rapino says, is "further strengthening and monetizing the relationship between artists, fans and sponsors – before, during and after live events".

Radiohead launch social networking site (NME)
MS: The band have created a web-based forum called W.A.S.T.E. where fans and friends can share photos, details, view tour dates, and watch videos by various artists such as Battles, Nick Cave, and of course Radiohead themselves.

The Money Shot: Can Amazon Take Down iTunes?, The Impact of 'Underground Garage', and The Fan Remix Phenomenon...

    Today's headlines...

The Genius of Crowds (Chicago Reader)
MS: Now that the Internet has removed those physical barriers, though, unofficial works can go aboveground. “Bodycage,” as Chicago designer J. Tyler Helms calls his Arcade Fire video, has racked up more than 680,000 views on YouTube since he posted it there in February 2007—an awful lot of exposure that Merge Records didn’t have to spend a penny for. The majors still routinely make the mistake of squelching fan-generated videos and remixes, but many other rights holders—especially indies like Merge—have seen the light. Fans who are so into a song that their urge to be creatively involved with it takes them past, say, learning to pick it out on acoustic guitar or videotaping themselves dancing to it are a precious resource, and no label with a lick of sense should treat them like pirates.

'Little Steven' working hard for the Boss (San Jose Mercury News)
MS: Q - Do you think "Underground Garage" has had a significant impact on the musical landscape?

A - Yeah, I think we have. I mean, considering where our culture was seven years ago when we started - you couldn't find rock 'n' roll anywhere on the radio. There wasn't one single rock 'n' roll band signed to a major label.

I mean, it was a whole different world than it is now. So I think we have made an impact by not compromising, and by being innovative in that we combine the best cool old stuff with the best cool new stuff.

Amazon a threat to iTunes Store (Chicago Sun-Times)
MS: But even the most ardent fan of Apple has to acknowledge the possibility that the iTunes Store became a success not through divine intercession but because Apple has been giving the marketplace what it wants. And the marketplace, in tones that are only getting louder and clearer, is saying that digital rights management is a dealbreaker.

They're saying it via the most effective means possible: by flocking to Amazon.com's MP3 Store. Since its launch in the fall, Amazon has seized a position -- no, make that "casually sauntered in and taken a seat" -- as the No. 2 digital music retailer. And while their catalog isn't quite as deep as Apple's (4.5 million tracks to the iTunes Store's 6 million), all of those songs are sold without DRM. Amazon doesn't care what religion you are: They just want your money.

The Money Shot: Elvis Costello Takes On Leno?, Lekman Loves Love, and Malkmus Name Checks U2, Arcade Fire & Radiohead...

    Today's headlines...

Elton John Backing Elvis Costello TV Show (Billboard)
MS: "I'm not interested in extracting some dark secret," Costello says of the show. "I'd rather hear about a bright secret, a deep love or a curiosity that might be otherwise obscured by fame. This is a wonderful opportunity to talk in complete thoughts about music, movies, art or even vaudeville, then frame it with unique and illustrative performances."

    That's Amore: Jens Lekman
    (Readexpress)
MS: I don't think people are less romantic than I am, or less romantic than people used to be. I think that they just need to communicate more with each other. That's where love comes from. I see a lot of it in Americans especially. The people here are passionate.

    Interviews: Stephen Malkmus (AV Club)
MS: We just do what we do. I would quantify our sound as more underground than indie, in that it's not catering to a fashion, so much as indie happens to be a fashion now. But the underground lives on regardless. It always does. Because there are so many people making music, and there are enough people just making it to their own taste. In-your-face type music. The indie moniker has obviously grown with movies like Juno and The Arcade Fire or whatever. U2 wants to hang around with Arcade Fire. U2 didn't want to hang around with Pavement. It's too different, you know? Maybe they're better or something. Or maybe we were, you know, not a threat. The difference between U2 and Pavement was quite vast. It's grown narrower--closer, I guess. Radiohead being the biggest band in the world.

The Money Shot: Pressing The Flesh With R.E.M., Nick Cave's Mistress and Who The Fuck Is Bob Lefsetz?

    More headlines...

Rage Against The Machine (Washington Post)
MS: A remarkable thing happened last year, according to Solters, the Ticketmaster spokesman. The company was preparing to announce a major acquisition and in the midst of a media-strategy meeting, he recalls, "we're talking about the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal and somebody says, 'How are we going to deal with Lefsetz?' I couldn't believe that question came up. But so many people in the industry read him. His influence is incredible."

As the traditional music industry continues its downward spiral, Lefsetz's voice appears to be growing louder and more resonant. While the analyst/provocateur says some people misunderstand his mission -- "I'm not angry; I'm just passionate about music and trying to speak the truth about it" -- just about everybody in the industry seems to read his newsletter, at least occasionally.

Solters explains the appeal thusly: "He's not boring. He really gets people's blood boiling, which is what an editorial writer wants to do. He speaks from the heart. He takes an opinion and just goes for it."

    Interview: Nick Cave
    (Pitchfork)
MS: I think we've been infected. Grinderman was like a bomb going off within the Bad Seeds. It was like going back to the wife and telling her that you'd taken a mistress. That can be a very damaging thing, but it can also be a very positive thing. I think it happened to be a very positive thing. It loosened things up considerably within the Bad Seeds. It's difficult in a band for people not to take on certain roles, and they just become the things that they do within a band. This shook that up a lot. And that's been really, really healthy. Scary, but healthy.

My days with the shiny happy people of R.E.M. (Times Online)
MS: It's at Radio 1's Jo Whiley Live Lounge where Buck, Mills and Stipe begin their Wednesday morning, greeting each other over a forest of BBC microphones as engineers set up an acoustic session. “Hello Michael,” Buck beams. “I've been up for hours.” Sticking a pair of plastic sunglasses into the same Dior suit jacket he wore at the Albert Hall on Monday night, Stipe wheezes “Good morning” and reaches for a restorative beaker of coffee. Only someone who has carefully nurtured his inner star power over three decades can look so dishevelled in such expensive clothes. Seeing a BBC camera crew, he gravely declares: “I look terrible singing in profile and great face-on. Can I ask you to bear that in mind?”
