Happy Holidays from Musical Justice!

Hey gang...

This one's been a tough year, with the internet radio royalty issues calling into question whether we'd be able to afford to continue. But as 2008 comes into view on the horizon, I think it's going to be a great year with a lot of new listeners, new ideas and new music.

Posts have been a bit sparse around here lately and I'm not sure how much I'll be posting to close out the year... not a lot of news these days. Don't be surprised if a stray post pops up, but don't be surprised if it's radio silence until January 2nd either.

Finally, thanks to everyone out there that stops by the blog or listens to the stations. You are the reason I do this and I hope that you'll continue to enjoy the music we share here.

All the best to you, your friends and family for this holiday season. I hope that 2008 is a peaceful and rewarding one for all of us.

Lily Allen calls herself 'short, fat and ugly' (NME)

MS: "I felt like, 'Oh God, I'm short, fat, ugly...and I hate all these people who flaunt their beauty'.

"Ever since a kid I've felt like I'm possibly the uncoolest, naffest person ever to walk the earth. But I feel great at the moment. I actually don't have one bad thing to say about anything."

I abhor racism, and apologise - for speaking to NME (Morrissey @ The Guardian)

MS: I do not mean to be rude to Tim Jonze, but when I first caught sight of him I assumed that someone had brought their child along to the interview. The runny nose told the whole story. Conor had assured that Tim was their best writer. Talking behind his hands and in endless fidget, Tim accepted every answer I gave him with a schoolgirl giggle, and repeatedly asked me if I was shocked at how little he actually knew about music. I told him that, yes, I was shocked. It was difficult for me to believe that the best writer from the "new" NME had never heard of the song Drive-in Saturday; I explained that it was by David Bowie, and Tim replied "oh, I don't know anything about David Bowie." I wondered how it could be so - how the quality of music journalism in England could have fallen so low that the prime 'new' NME writer knew nothing of David Bowie, an artist to whom most relevant British artists are indebted, and one who singlehandedly changed British culture - musically and otherwise.

MP3 Blogs Offer File Sharing Even the RIAA Could Love (Wired)

MS: The RIAA declined to comment for this story, but the publisher of one MP3 aggregator, who asked to remain anonymous, says music labels have been extremely cooperative. This blogger monitors more than 3,000 music blogs daily, providing links to files that have been uploaded to various music lockers. And no, the blogger has never been asked by a label to take a link down.

"Actually, we've been contacted by labels, promo agencies and even musicians and bands to help promote them. Which we've done, free of charge," the blogger wrote by email.

Reverse payola: Group pushing radio stations to pay performers (Pittsburgh Post Gazette)

MS: "The giant record companies have not adapted to the times and have seen their revenues shrinking because they didn't make music available on a digital basis. Instead of adapting their business model, they've spent the last few years suing college kids and grandmothers'' over illegal downloads of online music. "Now they see radio stations as an opportunity to make up the losses that are the result of really bad business decisions on their part."

Music group seeks share in concert ticket re-sales (Reuters)

MS: "What they are saying here is no different to (saying) that if you had a used Ford car you should pay Ford a tax when you sold it," he told Reuters. "If I have a Harry Potter book to re-sell, do I pay J.K. Rowling twice?"

We’ve got lives and stuff. What we write about is how things affect our lives as we are now. We’re not trying to be like young guys prancing around like idiots.

MS: The vinyl, limited to 250 copies, is being sold via Domino's website though the label are not confirming who is behind it, explaining: "Unfortunately, we're not allowed to tell you the true identity of The Death Ramps but needless to say they're a band with A Certain Romance (wink, wink)."

Success the Hard Way: Alejandro Escovedo (Read Express)

MS: "As a songwriter, there's this room. No one enters but me. It's lonely, sometimes painful. The songs you get that are completely illuminated and transcend that room are rare," says Escovedo. "They're a great joy. But I don't want to live there anymore. I want to direct the songwriting away from me."

MS: I wanted to get out of people’s view: to go and spend time learning about myself and trying to be better. Not really technically better, but I just wanted to be better as a human being. And it’s really hard to do that when you make club music. There’s no such thing as a better human being in club music! It’s like, you either dance . . . or you get the fuck out! And I don’t want to be talking about ‘big titties’ and ‘fucking hos’. Dance music needs to be expanded, in terms of subject matter and substance, and that’s what I was trying to do.
