MS: Springsteen had seen the boy earlier in the show and asked him what had happened to the sign he'd been brandishing. He stepped down on the catwalk in front of the stage, politely took the sign from the little boy, said something to him, then returned to the microphone and held up the sign for all to see.

"Ramrod Please," it said.

"Haven't played it in five years," Springsteen said of the obscurity from 1980's "The River," before firing off its driving six-string intro.

MS: During the first 29 days of October, 1.2 million people worldwide visited the “In Rainbows” site, with a significant percentage of visitors ultimately downloading the album. The study showed that 38 percent of global downloaders of the album willingly paid to do so, with the remaining 62 percent choosing to pay nothing. The percent downloading for free in the U.S. (60 percent) is only marginally lower than in the rest of the world (64 percent).

Radiohead Box Set: Label's Idea, Not Band's (Pitchfork)

MS: According to the Radiohead camp, the box set was indeed not the band's idea. They did not confirm any in-fighting, though. EMI agreed that the box was a label initiative, and said that the band's management was offered the opportunity to participate in the project, but declined. As for the release date, EMI maintained that no maliciousness was intended. Rather, it's simply box set season--who doesn't want to find a nicely packaged multi-CD bundle under the tree on Christmas morning?

The Writer's Strike Is Affecting Musicians (Rolling Stone)

MS: Backstreet Boys, Band of Horses, Garth Brooks and Joss Stone have also felt the hurt, as have Brooklyn band Grizzly Bear, who were supposed to perform tonight on Late Night with Conan O’Brien to promote their new EP Friend. As the band groused in a MySpace bulletin, “well,… it happened. CONAN OFFICIALLY CANCELED… thanks to the writer’s strike. oh well. hopefully we’ll get another date. We were really looking forward to it!”

Elvis Costello and England not returning each other's phone calls (Guardian)

MS: "A lot of good new bands still come out of England but I just don't feel part of it. British music fans don't have the same attitude to age as they do in America where young people come to check out, say, Willie Nelson. They feel some connection with him and find a role for that music in their lives."
