The Money Shot: Keane's Near-Breakup

Seems that the intensity of recording their next CD almost blew Keane apart...
"It got to the point where I was afraid that I would have to wake up the following morning and think about what I was going to do next," Rice-Oxley said. "To suddenly realize that everything was disappearing was incredibly frightening. We all loved the music we were making so much, but when you're dealing with things that were really personal to all of us, when you immerse yourself in the emotions we were writing about, it can't help but bring up bad things."

The Money Shot: Courtney Love

She's back from rehab and working on a new CD with Linda Perry...

"My dedication right now is to bring back the queen of rock and roll, and that's Courtney Love," she said. "That woman is brilliant, and I can't allow myself as a music lover and someone who really respects that artist to go down with 'America's Sweetheart'. That record sucked. She knows it. The world knows it. It was a horrible, crap-ass record."

Dylan, G'n'R, Morrissey Top Roskilde Lineup

The lineup for Denmark's Roskilde Festival's been announced and it dwarfs pretty much anything here in the States. Here's some highlights:

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, ARCTIC MONKEYS, CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH, GEORGE CLINTON PARLIAMENT / FUNKADELIC, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, BOB DYLAN, EDITORS , FRANZ FERDINAND, GUNS N’ ROSES, KAISER CHIEFS, LADY SOVEREIGN, JENNY LEWIS, MORRISSEY, THE RACONTEURS, JOSH ROUSE, SIGUR RÓS, THE STROKES, RUFUS WAINWRIGHT, ROGER WATERS PERFORMING THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, KANYE WEST

The Money Shot: The Flaming Lips

Harp interviews the always-quoteable Coyne:
Someone asked me if I had a title for the record, and I didn’t really have one but I said, “I have this title, it sounds kind of cool.” It went along, all this sort of stuff about how insane the religious right has become, and all this kind of inner politics of suicide bombers, and the whole mentality of the fanatical religious freaks, and how in a sense they all are self-proclaimed mystics. They seem to know some insight that just us regular people would never see.

Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before...

Pete Doherty's doing his best to prove that there is such a thing as bad publicity... this is just sad.

The Babyshambles singer was stopped by plain clothes police officers while driving. According to a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police: "At 14.10 this afternoon two men, one aged 27 the other 21, were arrested after a vehicle was stopped in Roman Road, E2, by plain clothes officers in an unmarked police car on routine patrol. They were arrested for what was believed to be class A drugs with intent to supply and both men are currently being held in a east London police station. The older man was the passenger the younger the driver."

The new arrest comes just hours after Doherty was sentenced for admitting seven charges for possession of drugs at Thames Magistrates Court.

The Money Shot: Rhett Miller

Tufts Daily interviews the Old 97's frontman...
"This girl in Kentucky put us [the Old 97's] up one night - I shouldn't even tell this story, it's so sad!" Miller says. "The drummer, Phillip [Peeples], and I came downstairs, and she was sitting in the kitchen. There's a bunch of Hershey's bar wrappers on the floor, and there's three or four left in the pack, and she has chocolate all over her mouth, and she says, 'Do you want a Hershey bar? I hate them. I hate them.'"Miller shakes his head. "I wanted to give her a hug," he says. "It was just so sad - you heard the whole story in that sentiment."

On the Road with... Mark Olson & Gary Louris

Billboard reports the best news I'm likely to hear today even though I'm not on the West Coast. It's a short list of dates, but let's hope this gets some momentum...

After regrouping for a tour last year, Mark Olson and Gary Louris have once again reunited for brief Western U.S. swing this spring. The former principals of the now-defunct Jayhawks have 10 dates slated, beginning April 28 in Tuscon, Ariz. "There's obviously an audience for it and we like to do it. Sure, it's a bit of a money-maker, it's a job, but it's going to be fun," Louris tells Billboard.com. "One of the really appealing parts is to hang out with Mark and be friends again."While there are no official plans for the two to record again, Louris does not rule out the possibility. "I wouldn't want it to be the record that I have to market for the next two years, but I would enjoy making a record with Mark," the 51-year-old songwriter says. "We'd just have to find the time. But we wouldn't do a record that requires two months in the studio. Mark likes to write and make stuff in a grassroots situation. We don't get too fancy."

Jack & Coke

NME talks about it here... and here's the link to the leaked ad.

The much anticipated Jack White-penned Coca-Cola advert has leaked on the internet. The White Stripes man has written and sings the advert's songs which boasts an uplifting, brass-led tune and the chorus: "It's the right thing to do, and you know it, It's inside of you, so just show it, love is the truth."

Coming Attractions: Neil Young

Neil takes on the Pres...
Veteran rocker Neil Young has recorded a protest album featuring an anti-Iraq war track with "a holy vow to never kill again" and a song titled "Let's Impeach the President." The 10-track set, "Living with War," was recorded this month by a "power trio" -- electric guitar, bass and drums -- plus trumpet and a 100 voices, Young announced on his Web site.

Any week that features a new DBT CD is automatically a cut above the rest. The live Stereophonics CD looks like an attempt to cash in on their live rep. Overall, I'll give the week a "B" on the strength of DBT's effort which'll make a lot of year end Top 10s...

  • Drive-By Truckers - A Blessing and a Curse
  • Richard Butler - Richard Butler
  • Elefant - The Black Magic Show
  • The Secret Machines - Ten Silver Drops
  • Stereophonics - Live from Dakota
  • Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs - Under the Covers Vol. 1

The Money Shot: Stooges Reunite!

Iggy and the boys are working on their first new album since 1973...

"All the same passions and problems are there," Pop tells Billboard of writing with Scott and Ron Asheton. "But the problems are in a more muted style. I'm still the showoff in the group that gets all the attention. Everyone has their role. It's pretty much the way it was in high school."

It's Been Awhile...

Not sure if anyone's out there, but I think it's time to fire this blog back up. There's still a lot of behind the scenes stuff going on and taking longer than expected. That's the life of a one-man shop, eh?

Anyway, I'm gonna do my best to hit this on a daily (weekday) basis going forward. Let's see how far I get...
