The Money Shot: 7.27.07

Today's headlines...

The Mendoza Line Go Down Swinging (Chart Attack)
MS: The Mendoza Line's husband and wife team of Tim Bracy and Shannon McArdle have called it quits, bringing an end to both their marriage and their collaboration in the rootsy pop-rock band.

Dave Grohl Says Foo Fighters Haven't Gone Soft (MTV)
MS: "I still listen to Slayer once a week," he said. "But a lot of people who came to see us on our first tour in '95 might have been 22 then, and now they're as old as me. It's all about musical exploration," he continued. "We have moments of kick-you-in-the-teeth rock stuff, but there's a lot of power in that lower dynamic too. To be able to get a room to pin-drop silence with an acoustic song that means something is sometimes even more powerful than all the lights and lasers and amps in the world."

The Coral: 'We talked about splitting up' (NME)
MS: "It's crushing when you think about it," Skelly added. "But it's reality, isn't it. I think you need it to happen to remind you of how much you love it [being in the band]."

DIY: The New Trend In Music (icWales)
MS: “Mind, we are more likely to say we are rubbish and not brilliant in press releases. That’s the worst thing about doing it yourself, you need to learn how to sell yourself.”

Tegan & Sara ready to face the future (L.A. Times)
MS: "It's kind of an obsession," Tegan admitted, describing the band's latest cut with long bangs and shaved sides as the "flop-hawk." "We refuse to let just anyone touch our hair. It becomes this thing: How do we route our tour so we can get back for a haircut?"

Prince's Experiment With Free CDs Raises a Ruckus (CMT)
MS: Prince's overall logic? Well, his last CD sold only 80,000 copies in the UK. As a so-called heritage artist (meaning one who's been around a while and doesn't sell millions of CDs anymore), he figures since his main income derives from selling concert tickets and merchandise, including sales of his previous CDs, it makes sense to try to attract new listeners and expand his fan base. And offering free music may be the best way to do that.
