The Money Shot: 7.24.07

Today's headlines...

Webcasting Royalties: A Modest Proposal (Wired)
The Money Shot: At stake is the future of net radio -- a market that may seem like a niche sideline today but one that could explode with the emergence of ubiquitous broadband over Wi-Fi and next-generation wireless networks. Decisions made now could have an enormous impact on how we consume music in the coming years and decades. Suffice to say it's in no one's interest to kill net radio.

Social Distortion Compiling Cuts For New Album (Billboard)
The Money Shot: In terms of the band's follow-up to 2004's "Sex, Love, and Rock'N'Roll," Ness says, "We have a dozen ideas at least -- a lot of songs that didn't make the last record. They didn't make it not necessarily because they weren't good enough. I have demos from 1994 that I'm revisiting -- great ideas that didn't get finished. You know, maybe they needed a better chorus or something. Also, I just want to create some new stuff entirely."

Joe Pernice at Work on Book, Smiths Screenplay (Pitchfork)
MS: Not only that, but he's currently getting a screenplay together-- along with actor Neal Huff-- based on his entry in the 33 1/3 "books about albums" series. Pernice picked the Smiths' sophomore LP Meat Is Murder for his 2003 treatise, and though some part of us hopes the film consists of Joe sitting in a room listening to "Rusholme Ruffians", we're guessing it'll have more to do with the strong semi-autobiographical thread running through his 33 1/3 volume's narrative.

The Donnas Prep 'Bitchin' New Album (Billboard)
MS: The Donnas have unveiled additional details about their new album and label, first tipped by Billboard last month. The group has set a Sept. 18 release date for "Bitchin'," which will be issued by its own Purple Feather label through Red Eye. It's the Donnas' first release since parting with Atlantic after two albums.

The Hives to play intimate London shows (NME)
MS: In a statement singer Howlin Pelle Almqvist said: "At times it has felt like we are prisoners to our own creativity and that it is taking a long time. At this time we have a lot of songs. In the past we only had what was on each album. We ask you to bear with us as we take the time to wrestle this onto an album. An album of inhuman proportions. Hope all of you will enjoy it."
