I Predict Hit & Run?

According to the Kaiser Chiefs website, lead singer Ricky Wilson narrowly escaped becoming road kill...
He's the luckiest man alive, because he is still alive, it sounds daft, but a 'Ricky trademark jump' has probably saved his life. The jump meant he was flipped over the top of the car, hitting the windscreen, rather than getting trapped under it. He was crossing on a green pedestrian light. Whether it was a joyrider, wreckless driving or drunk driving we still don't know. Police are investigating - we'd like to thank the witnesses that have come forward so far.

The Money Shot: Reinventing The Strokes

The Independent interviews the band...
That The Strokes really care about their music has been well documented, but there's an ulterior motive to Casablancas' perfectionism that is less known: "I want to get better at my music so that I don't have to justify myself to journalists anymore," he says. Casablancas finds interviews excruciating. "Doing press is like talking to a bunch of bad psychiatrists," he chuckles. "It's so draining when every time you're talking to someone you know what you're saying is being judged."

Ticketmaster = Ticketscalper??

You decide... Here's the NY Times article.
Late this year the company plans to begin auctioning the best seats to concerts through ticketmaster.com.

With no official price ceiling on such tickets, Ticketmaster will be able to compete with brokers and scalpers for the highest price a market will bear.

"The tickets are worth what they're worth," said John Pleasants, Ticketmaster's president and chief executive. "If somebody wants to charge $50 for a ticket, but it's actually worth $1,000 on eBay, the ticket's worth $1,000. I think more and more, our clients — the promoters, the clients in the buildings and the bands themselves — are saying to themselves, `Maybe that money should be coming to me instead of Bob the Broker.' "

Coming Attractions: The Black Keys' Magic Potion

Billboard reports on the upcoming release from Radiohead's opening act...
Akron, Ohio-based rock duo the Black Keys have signed with Nonesuch Records. The group's label debut, "Magic Potion," will be released Sept. 12. As previously reported, the 12-track set will feature such songs as "Your Touch," "The Flame" and "It's Just Got To Be."

The Money Shot: E-Music Don't Need No Stinkin' DRM

Interesting article on the #2 internet music retailer...
"It's really not a philosophical decision; it's a practical one," says Pakman. "Early on, the belief was that we had to sell music in the only universally compatible format that existed. TiVo was just about to come out with MP3 playback on their machine and we didn't know if that was going to be big. There were a bunch of MP3 players on the market, including the iPod, and that market was growing. There were MP3 car stereos happening. There weren't any phones, but you can see that's where it was going. Everyone was putting MP3 in their device, so why not sell in a format that works in all those places?"

R.E.M. joins fight to stop the end of the world as we know it...

Another reason to love/respect the gents in R.E.M...

R.E.M. is among a group of artists and musicians who have created their own petition requesting legislation they say would ensure that the Internet would remain a level playing field. More than 650,000 people have signed a petition supporting the legislation, while telecommunications companies push for a measure that would leave control in the hands of the Federal Communications Commission.

Network neutrality, also called Internet neutrality, is the idea that the smallest companies and writers have the same access, reach and control as their larger competitors on the Internet. Those seeking to protect the system with federal laws claim that neutrality is what has made the Internet popular, democratic and a haven for free speech.

Look out! We're taking over the world...

This UK article says that internet radio has surpassed AM/FM radio over there. Is it true in the United States too? I'd think that a higher percentage of our listenership is done over car radios and that satellite radio also has an impact. But maybe someday soon, you'll be able to listen to Musical Justice over the air too and then it's all over for the big boys! ;)
Nearly one in four (24 per cent) listens online compared with 21 per cent who tune in to analogue broadcasts. Seventeen per cent use digital (Dab) radio and nine per cent get the programmes via their TV. The remaining 29 per cent represent the proportion of Virgin regulars who do not tune in at all on a given day.

The Money Shot: Pretty Girls Make Graves

Harp Magazine gets the band to talk about it's new CD, Elan Vital...
“People may say it’s not punk to use trumpets or accordions, but if you’re doing something different or something you think might be frowned upon by a lot of people, that’s upholding a punk mentality,” says Zollo. “I feel like it’s more punk to go to a show in a suit than it is to have a Mohawk and a skateboard,” says Clark. “Punk was a way of life, now it’s a genre.”

Coming Attractions: Thom Yorke Solo

NME and Billboard discuss the surprise announcement of a Thom Yorke solo CD at a Radiohead fan site ...
Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke's debut solo album, "The Eraser," will be released in July via XL Recordings. The set was produced and arranged by longtime Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich. "Inevitably it is more beats and electronics, but it [is] songs," Yorke says of the project in an email to members of Radiohead's W.A.S.T.E. fan organization.

The Money Shot: The Futureheads

The band's new release "News and Tributes" is slotted for June 13th...
"Some people wanted us to make the same record," says Barry Hyde. "We've been playing some songs off our first record for five years. You have enough of it. In rehearsals for this record, we'd stop songs that sounded too typical, like things we'd done before, and try to do something else."

Coming Attractions: OutKast

New OutKast before the end of the summer... has anyone found a copy of the single yet?
After numerous delays, the OutKast film "Idlewild" is now slated to arrive Aug. 25 in U.S. theaters, three days after the release of its LaFace soundtrack. The first single from the album, "Mighty O," leaked online earlier this week. The cut features OutKast's take on Cab Calloway's famous scatting from "Minnie the Moocher."

New World Party Video

I love World Party and I was really glad to see Karl Wallinger playing live again at SXSW this year. Back around 1997, I saw them on their last real U.S. tour and I can honestly say that the only performer that's ever impressed me more with the sheer range and intensity of his musical talents was Prince... and Prince is a much better dancer... ;)

Anyway, after suffering some health issues which nearly took his life, Wallinger's back with the U.S. release of "Dumbing Up". You can see the video for the first single "What Does It Mean Now?" here...

Swapping Music Via the USPS?

Boston.com discusses the new website, lala.com, which is currently in beta test...
''It seems to be perfectly legal," Gibson said, for the same reason that retailers can buy and sell used books and CDs. ''If you are the owner of a particular physical copy of a CD or a book or anything that's copyrighted, you have the right to dispose of that CD or book any way you wish."

The Money Shot: One Pissed Flea

Flea speaks out on the leaking of the new Red Hot Chili Peppers CD to the Internet... ironically, at redhotchilipeppers.com...
"yes, we worked for a year and a half to make the epic record of our lives and it is sad to me for the business reasons of course i think we are selling something really cool and we put all we had into it, 28 songs, 2 hours of the best that we can offer and i think it is a fair deal for everyone and for people to just steal a poor sound quality version of it for free because some asshole stole it and put it on the internet is sad to me."
